OT: Any great book recommendations?

  • I just finished "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, which is an amazing WW II story. If anyone's interested in military history or stories of incredible perseverance, I cannot imagine that you would be disappointed.

Some others I have enjoyed over the last year or so:
The Book Thief (also a WW II theme, just incredible and if you listen to the audiobook you won't be sorry- I might trade an appendage to have the voice of the narrator).

    Bossypants (Tina Fey)- very funny

Don't Vote- It Just Encourages the Bastards- by P.J. O'Rourke, a conservative from Toledo. I'm not a conservative, but I have to say I agreed with almost everything he says and it's humorous as well.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother- very interesting look at Chinese parenting vs American parenting- I came away thinking something in between might be the sweet spot.

Anyone have any other recommendations? I'm open to a wide variety of topics.

  • Currently the best book I've ever read and i'm only two thirds of the way through; On The Road by Jack Kerouac. Unbelievable book about a group of friends who travel the country from coast to coast hitching rides and living off mere bucks at a time. Living and traveling for nothing more than the experience of meeting new people and revolutionizing the "beat" generation way of life. Then go watch basically the second installment of the beat generation when Ken Kessey (author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) and his friends made a documentary called Magic Trip. You can find it on Netflix. Only for the deep intellectuals honestly looking to understand more about themselves and what it means to be BEAT! Please someone who's read and saw this tell me in not crazy and it was as earth shattering to you as it is me...

One of my friends actually does these things. He's walked through the Everglade swamps and even followed the trail of Chris McCandless (Into the Wild). He even went on the Bus where the kid died..

  • I also love WWII history, especially on the European front. You should check out Jeff Shaara's trilogy of historical fiction--"The Rising Tide", "The Steel Wave", and "No Less Than Victory".
I'm just finishing "The Longest Winter" by Alex Kershaw. It tells of the survival of a small US platoon that was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. It's a good read.

With the survivalist/perseverance genre, I enjoyed "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" (AKA 127 Hours) by Aron Ralston. "Alive" by Piers Paul Read is good. And "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakuer is another good one. Mountain climbers/survivors always make for cool stories.

"Where Men Win Glory" by Jon Krakauer is a great book about the life of Pat Tillman. It's a very inspiring story, and even includes a short part about the 1997 Rose Bowl.

An historical fiction classic The Frontiersman, by Allen Eckert, about Simon Kenton(the Daniel Boone of Ohio) is a great read if you are interested in early Ohio history. Eckert has several others about this subject as well.

An inspirational classic, The Greatest Miracle In The World, by Og Mandino is a quick read, but very impacting.
