"The Devil in the White City" Erik Larson. Book about the Chicago Worlds Fair (history) and a serial killer (crime). Very talented writer.

Fascinating book...I like well written historical narrative type books and that was a great one.
The best I've read since "Son of the Morningstar". Going back a few years but it was a great read about Custer and the Little Bighorn.

An historical fiction classic The Frontiersman, by Allen Eckert, about Simon Kenton(the Daniel Boone of Ohio) is a great read if you are interested in early Ohio history. Eckert has several others about this subject as well.

An inspirational classic, The Greatest Miracle In The World, by Og Mandino is a quick read, but very impacting.

I really enjoy Eckert. I like the Ohio / Kentucky history. Panther in the Sky was another good one, about Tecumseh. I've read at "That Dark and Bloody River", but never actually read it cover to cover. It's just a huge chronology of events in the Ohio river valley in the 1700's.

Currently the best book I've ever read and i'm only two thirds of the way through; On The Road by Jack Kerouac. Unbelievable book about a group of friends who travel the country from coast to coast hitching rides and living off mere bucks at a time. Living and traveling for nothing more than the experience of meeting new people and revolutionizing the "beat" generation way of life. Then go watch basically the second installment of the beat generation when Ken Kessey (author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) and his friends made a documentary called Magic Trip. You can find it on Netflix. Only for the deep intellectuals honestly looking to understand more about themselves and what it means to be BEAT! Please someone who's read and saw this tell me in not crazy and it was as earth shattering to you as it is me...

My favorite book of all time, and I read a lot. Kerouac is so freakin talented. I am jealous that you still have the last 3rd to experience for the 1st time... enjoy!

I also really liked the Hunger Games series. I get it is main stream, but really well done. I just took my 12 year old daughter to see the movie (this was her 3rd time seeing it) and I didn't fall asleep...and I always fall asleep at the movies.

I also like to go back and read something I read many years ago. My son brought home To Kill a Mocking Bird. That was the 1st book I recall reading as a kid and thinking I had discovered something magical. So I re-read it, 30 years later. It was really cool to experience it as an adult and coming away seeing things in a different light. Truly a great read if you have never experienced that book.

I just finished "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, which is an amazing WW II story. If anyone's interested in military history or stories of incredible perseverance, I cannot imagine that you would be disappointed.

Some others I have enjoyed over the last year or so: The Book Thief (also a WW II theme, just incredible and if you listen to the audiobook you won't be sorry- I might trade an appendage to have the voice of the narrator).

    Bossypants (Tina Fey)- very funny

Don't Vote- It Just Encourages the Bastards- by P.J. O'Rourke, a conservative from Toledo. I'm not a conservative, but I have to say I agreed with almost everything he says and it's humorous as well.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother- very interesting look at Chinese parenting vs American parenting- I came away thinking something in between might be the sweet spot.

Anyone have any other recommendations? I'm open to a wide variety of topics.

    GO BUCKS!!!

A legacy of Ashes - the history of the CIA
Enemies - the history of the FBI

Both are by Tim Weiner and are amazing, if you like history!

  • I don't read as much as I'd like to (got kids) or should, and don't mean to come off like I do, but I'm gonna throw a few more that I enjoyed out there.

"The Botany of Desire" was a really good non fiction by Jonathan Pollard. Basically about the co-evolution, with man, of apples, tulips, marijuana, and potatos.

"The Road" was gut wrenching. I don't remember the last book that had that kind of effect on me. Hopefully you haven't seen the movie, I never have, but the guys a masterful writer anyway.

"Hot Springs" by Stephen Hunter for the easy reading, engrossing kind of page turner. Especially good if you have any interest in guns. Pretty prolific writer, so if you like him, there's more in the series.
