Do you mean Lone Survivor? The story of Marcus Lutrell? If so, I can not explain how awesome of a book this is. It is literally amazing.
The best Buckeye book I have ever read is "1968." It is a fricking awesome book about the Super Soph's.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother- very interesting look at Chinese parenting vs American parenting- I came away thinking something in between might be the sweet spot.
Anyone have any other recommendations? I'm open to a wide variety of topics.

I'm currently reading The Big Short about the financial collapse. It's a pretty technical read, but fascinating.

Seriously, bucknutters, this is an awesome list, and I truly appreciate all the recs. I already started Lone Survivor this morning and downloaded On The Road, and there is more than enough on this thread already to keep me busy for quite some time! I am intrigued by many of these.

I just finished "Unbroken" as well, and I was deeply moved by the agony of his experience and his will to overcome. The author did a remarkable job of making the story feel like a novel--she spent seven years doing the research! This, and a couple of other WW II chronicles should be part of every American History course in high school--today's kids don't have a clue.
Another one I would recommend in the same genre is "With The Old Breed" by E. B Sledge that follows the author from Pelelieu (sp) to Okinawa with the 1st Marine Division. His account as an enlisted man in the middle of the carnage should also be taught in a Civics classes. It is available from Amazon, and I would urge every poster to read it.

PS: This an amazing thread. I wonder if that school up north, which prides itself on academics, ever had a thread like this. What am I thinking--neither book was checked out of the school library.

1. Enemies: A History of the FBI by Tim Weiner
2. Keynes-Hayek: The Clash that defined Modern Economics by Nicolas Wapshott
3. The Benefit and the Burden by Bruce Bartlett
4. The Ayatollah's Democracy: An Iranian Challenge by Hooman Majd
5. I.O.U.S.A. by Addison Wiggins (also a documentary)
6. Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science by Charles Wheelan
7. The Quest by Daniel Yergin
8. The Closing of the American Mind - Allan Bloom
9. The Ripple Effect by Alex Prud'homme
10. World on the Edge by Lester Brown - Free legal PDF available from the group that sponsors the book
A few authors that I always enjoy reading: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Freakanomics ( Leavit and Dubnedr) guys (more beach reading), Fareed Zakaria, Malcolm Gladwell

SCum is a good school....no one can deny that. To think they are somehow superior academically is absurd.
