OT: Any great book recommendations?

I've also been interested in the financial collapse. Some other books that I'm sure you've already read are:

    1. Too Big to Fail by Andrew Ross Sorkin (HBO's docudrama was based on this book) 2. Reckless Endangerment by Gretchen Morgenson 3. Fault Lines by Raghuram G Rajan 4. Boomerang by Michael Lewis 5. Fool's Gold by Gillian Tett

Sounds like you and I have similar tastes in non-fiction stuff.

  • If you like inspirational books connected to WWII, here are a couple more recommendations:

    "Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides

"Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy" by Eric Metaxas

I only read non-fiction (with the exception of Orwell), but here are a few good ones to check out (some I've just started, others I've read):

    > snip

A few authors that I always enjoy reading: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Freakanomics ( Leavit and Dubnedr) guys (more beach reading), Fareed Zakaria, Malcolm Gladwell

    I'm a non-fiction reader as well. Here's a recently read favorites list:

The Penguin and the Leviathan (Yochai Benkler)
    The Post-American World (Fareed Zakaria)
The Starfish and the Spider (Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom)
Forces for Good (Leslie Crutchfield and Heather McCleod Grant) about nonprofits, but learnings for all sectors
Parting the Waters (Taylor Branch) A re-read in remembrance of MLK on the anniversary of his death

I've been doing more audio books (audible.com) recently. I really enjoy being able to listen to a book, usually at an accelerated reading clip, while I'm driving to and fro.

I also love WWII history, especially on the European front. You should check out Jeff Shaara's trilogy of historical fiction--"The Rising Tide", "The Steel Wave", and "No Less Than Victory". I'm just finishing "The Longest Winter" by Alex Kershaw. It tells of the survival of a small US platoon that was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. It's a good read.

With the survivalist/perseverance genre, I enjoyed "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" (AKA 127 Hours) by Aron Ralston. "Alive" by Piers Paul Read is good. And "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakuer is another good one. Mountain climbers/survivors always make for cool stories.

"Where Men Win Glory" by Jon Krakauer is a great book about the life of Pat Tillman. It's a very inspiring story, and even includes a short part about the 1997 Rose Bowl.

Perrine...just finished "The Longest Winter" last month. Unbelievable story of courage & perseverance.

I switched WWII theatre's and reading "Helmet for a Pillow". If you like European theatre, definitely check out Stephen Ambrose's collection.
