OT: Browns Draft Options

  • aange00 said...

So I have been seeing a lot of talk lately on ESPN on the possibility of the browns getting into the mix for Quarterback Matt Flynn and the possibilities of trading up for the 2nd pick in the draft to snag RG3.

I would rather them pick up RG3 or stay at 4 and keep their other first round pick. We need too many playmakers to pass on him or blackmon at 2 or 4 either of the two I would be happy with. Matt Flynn does not seem like the answer for the Browns nor am I too fond of him. Opinions?

This is my first and only post on here so please be kind. I love reading everyone's comments and stories on here, so I'm not trying to get everyone worked up, but I did want to throw in my two cents just once.

The Browns do have a lot of holes to fill, that is a fact. The problem with drafting RG3 at this stage is risk. He may turn out to be a great QB in the end, but are we willing to take that risk and pass up the opportunity to grab two great playmakers in the process? The more logical response would be to draft to improve your offense and give Colt another shot before dismissing him. If you throw RG3 onto the same team, you are taking the risk of him getting injured and underperforming just like Colt and that's after you gave up a few draft picks for him.

My take is to do one of the following:
    1. Pick up a quality RT at #4 pick and a quality WR (Floyd or Wright) at #22.
    2. Pick up Richardson at #4 and one of the above-mentioned WRs at #22.
    3. Pick up Blackmon at #4 and a good RT at #22.
These scenarios allow you to add one/two playmakers and solidify your line for Colt and then if Colt doesn't hack it after another season, then you go after the QB catch next year in Barkley or a free agent. The Browns need to use their high pick (#4) for once instead of trading down. Their defense needs help also, but offense is the major priority at this point. Depending on who they pick, this draft will define the Browns for at least the next 5 yrs. Thanks for readin-I'm done. Go Bucks.

RG3 would be a sexy pick but i dont think its that logical... the browns have a lot of holes to fill before any qb could be successful. RG3 would add a spark but im afraid of injury if he tries to do too much and overcompensate for the lack of talent around him.

I would much rather keep both first round picks... then pickup your qb of the future. Colt was given somewhat of a raw deal with a short offseason to prepare with. One more year for the kid.. if he cant do it.. goodbye

a couple months ago, i would have agreed with you, but quarterback is soooo important in the nfl that if you believe he is your guy for 12 years....you gotta do everything you can to get him.

I say we dont trade up to get anybody. We have to many needs to fill to trade 2 first round picks to trade up 2 spots. I really like Griffen as a player and QB. I really wish we could draft him whatever it takes. but we have to many holes to fill.
I say if RG3 is there at #4, we take him. but we do not trade up to get him. If RG3 is not there, we trade down & pick up more picks to help fill all the holes. @ 22 I hope the Browns take Mike Adams at Tackle.
I think you give McCoy another year. He's did pretty good IMO considering he dosnt have any weapons to work with. NONE!
Greg Little will be a good player in the future & so will Mo Mass. Browns need to get the ball in Josh Cribbs hands more. Ben Watson could be another great target when hes healthy again.
I really think the Browns need to trade down at 4 to someone willing to give up some good picks. That is only if RG3 is not there.

If RG3 is not there, the browns need to trade down a few spots, draft Trent Richardson, then get Mike Adams @ 22. Also need to draft Posey in round 3. Round 2 I say we go after someone on Defense. Jerel Worthy, Zach Brown (UNC LB), Alfonzo Dennard (Neb CB), Vontaze Burfitc (ASU LB) Lavonte David (Neb LB) Jared Crick (Neb DL) come to mind. Round 4, Isiah Peed (Cincy RB) if we dont take Richardson at all, if we get Richardson, go for Brandon Washington (Miami U OL).

Mike Adams is too soft for my liking and Posey dropped too many balls for me to draft him...

  • You can't build through free agency, you'll overpay someone to come to Cleveland cause they aren't close to the playoffs. They need to look for a veteran leader similar to what Kyle Vandenbosh did for Detroit. Other than that, build through the Draft. Not an Ingram fan at all, would Take RG3 or Blackmon at 4, whomever is left, then get the best available at a position of need at 22. I love Mike Adams but if I'm the GM, I'm going after lineman a little later in rd. 3

I agree with in regards to qb free agency this offseason. I think signing a guy like Flynn is buying at the highest price. Just not a good investment. If I was going to bring in a QB I would look at Jason Campbell if he passes his physical. He broke his collarbone but that is a much better injury to come back from than soft tissue injuries or dislocations/separations.

The guy has played in the WCO and was playing well before he got hurt. He could come at a decent price and would be an upgrade over Colt.

If RG3 is off the board at 4 then I would be ok with Campbell and Colt going at it in camp.

  • I don't know what other fans have said, but I just can't see giving up the #4 AND #22 pick to move up just 2 spots. IMO that is a waste(not calling RG3 a waste) and I would rather pick up 2 good players in the 1st round then just 1. We need a lot on this team and need all the picks we have. I DEF want to pick up a wr and either an o-lineman or cb with the 2 picks in the 1st round.

I don't think anybody would argue that you should build through free agency. However, there's a ton of young players on this team and you need some veterens to help them, and the team as a whole develop. The Browns have about 30M of capspace, and could easily make a couple moves to push that number upwards by 5-8M if they so choose. They need to infuse some talent into this program. I like that they're going to sign a FA wideout. I hope it's someone like DeSean Jackson, Stevie Johnson, Pierre Garcon, etc. I'd also like to see them sign a starting DE (There's a few good ones that could be out there), a LB, OL, & Someone for the secondary (Preferrably a corner...although FA Corners do get paid too much). Plus, if they're planning on bringing in a rookie QB, they had damn well BETTER put some better pieces around him on offense.... unless you want to see the same formula they've used for young QB's going back to 1999. Sounds like they plan on doing whatever they can do to keep D'Qwell Jackson... but they had damn well better keep Peyton Hillis as well. The Browns need to stop letting good players go. Peyton is a damn good player. Even if you want to draft another RB (which I'm ok with), Peyton can play a valuable role on this team, and we all know that you need a couple good RB's nowadays. You let Peyton go.. and now you have ZERO viability at that position.

  • The Browns have 1 WR that is good enough to retain. And he's young (Little). They have 0 RBs. Zero. Hardesty and Ogbannaya (sp.) aren't going to get it done. Quick, name one RT who is a playmaker in the league. I'll wait. ... ... exactly. We need an upgrade over the guy who played "turnstyle" last year at RT, but do we use a 1st rd pick on one when there are so many other positions of need? No. When we can get an upgrade in rds 2 or 3 or FA? Heck no.

All these things cannot reasonably be addressed in the draft. FA will play a large role. Possibly re-signing Hillis (mixed feelings on that myself), the signing of one or preferably TWO FA WRs (Garcon / D. Jackson / Colston / Manningham), and the addition of at least 2 new linebackers (from which there are hordes to choose from: http://www.footballsfuture.com/2012/fa/lb.html ) are going to be the moves to watch.

From my vantage point, you ought to use FA to shore up your team so that you're in position to draft THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE NO MATTER POSITION when it is your turn. If the best player available plays a position you already have locked up, then you trade down. That's as simple as anyone can make it. Drafting based on position need kills drafts and franchises because they overpay while other teams get the better players.
