OT: Christian Rap

  • I've always enjoyed old school hip hop and have listened to a lot of secular rap in my day, althought I was never into gangsta rap. When I started trying to listen to christian music exclusively, rap was left out of my collection. I thought christian rap was cheesy and theres no way it could bring honor to God or benefit any Christian. Man was I wrong! Last summer, I was introduced to a christian rapper named Lecrae and I loved it!! I quickly purchased all his albums and listened to him nonstop for 2 or 3 months. After researching a little bit, I discovered that Lecrae was associated with a group of 40 christian rappers called the 116 clique (Romans 1:16). The more I listened to the music, the more Bible I learned through it. Ive been in church my whole life and I've learned things from this music that I had never heard before. Their purpose is to uplift Christ and they accomplish it in every song. Some of them even graduated from seminary, so they know their stuff. The music is encouraging and I feel like my relationship with Christ has been strengthened through it and like I said, I've learned a ton about the Bible. I know there are a lot of people on this board who listen to rap music. I want to encourage you guys (Christian and Non-Christian) to check out some of these rappers on youtube or itunes. I know how christian rap seems (I thought it was cheesy too as a christian!), but these guys are awesome at what they do and I think you'll find that it's very good music. Great Lyrics, great beats, and a great message! If I were going to suggest an album to check out first, it would be Trip Lee's "The Good Life" that just came out in April. Every song is very good and he hits on all kinds of subjects and delves very deeply into them. Thanks for reading and go buckeyes

Thanks for the info. I remember when DC Talk first came out. They started out doing Christian rap and were pretty decent. I'll check out your recommendation. Thank you and Go BUCKS!!

  • Check out the Christian rock group called Red. They sound like Lincoln park. The earlier albums are killer.

  • My friend, who is a hard-core in your face christian, bought that Trip Lee guys CD and played it for me on a recent roadtrip we took. I thought it was a joke at first. It was probably some of the worst garbage I have ever heard in my life!

Just awful. So my recommendation to those who might try it is to not try it. You will be glad you didn't waste your time.

But hey, everyone has their own tastes!

Depends On what kind of rap you like Trip Lee CD is good but not as good as his other albums which are even better. If you like Up tempo hardcore rap check out Thisl' and the second J'son Cd called my city.

If you like twists and bone etc... There is a dude named KB who is just super tight but hasn't dropped his first cd yet but his mix tapes and singles are off the charts.

I like all types of rap,r&b and rock and there are a lot of good groups out there.my favorite label is Reach Records and the 116 clique boys are the best the OP is correct but let me say hopefully they inspire you to read your Bible and not just replace it.

Actually it's inspired me to dig in to my Bible and a bible commentary which I had never used before. And I've spent a lot more time studying and thinking about things I would've missed before.

  • Did anyone else look at this post thinking it was about a new Offensive Tackle prospect named Christian Rapp?

  • I like Lecrae a lot as well. Some groups to check out would be The Grits, Sho Baraka, and Thr3e (specifically a song called Theory Hazit). All of 116 clique is good.

I also listen to some rock type groups such as Casting Crowns, Lincoln Brewster, Third Day, MercyMe and Tobby Mac ( though not sure what genre he fits into).

I had a Christian rap cd made with Grits, 116, Lecrae, Sho Baraka, and Thr3e on it. One night an African American truck driver stopped In ( I am a warehouse ast. Manager for a manufacturing company) and was talking to me about a prostitute he met while driving. He Said she was selling books and he told her he does not read but donated the money. He said she told him she would do anything he wanted but he told her he was married for 35 years. He said she proceeded with god will forgive for your daily sins if you ask every night. He said so I can sin as much as I want and GOD will forgive me?I asked if he reads the bible? He said he was always on the road and did not have time to read. I asked if he listened to hip hop or rap at which he answered yes sometimes. I asked him if he would be interested in listening to Christian rap and he replied yes but had never heard of any. I went to my truck, took the cd out and gave it to him. He offered to pay me for it but I told him if he would promise to listen to it he could have it. The first song I told him to listen to was 13 letters by 116 clique which is all about the book of Romans.
