OT - Ever screw up at work / Get fired?

  • chapa_el said...

I kinda messed up the other day at work and feel pretty bummed about it. I'm the kind of person that gets real disappointed in oneself...

I don't think its something to get fired for, but I probably deserve a write-up. I'm not gonna relay what happened, its too fresh. I feel like a turd right now ha.

But I guess I find it hard to work hundreds of days of the year and never mess up. I think I'm a pretty solid employee and a damn good one to have around, but I'm human, right? So it would make me feel better to hear others' stories of screwing up on the job...

    Anybody got anything??

Im a true believer in you have to make mistakes to learn. NO ONE is perfect and with all the pressures with whats happening in the world today its easy to loose your cool or just screw up! I make mistake as much as the next person but i always try to not repeat my failures and move on.

    Who's Zead..Zeads dead baby.

You don't work at JP Morgan, do you? j/k.

    Talk about someone screwing up.

  • C'mon man, you can't start a thread like this and not tell us what happened. You're not using your real name on here. So out with it! What happened exactly? How did things end up turning out. You have us all curious here. Ha.

  • Good buddy of mine with a six figure salary in a position he had no business being in was canned recently for sharing porn via email with a co-worker. Now THAT'S dumb!

  • I used to be a turn around manager, 2.5 years ago I went on vacation for a couple weeks and was let go the day I came back because "everything worked well while I was gone", that's what I was hired to do.....noted.

  • Easy there pissed puppy. Pretty sure everyone here knew I was going a little over the top there on purpose just to throw a jab at CA. But, really, you can't say honestly that you think the work ethic of Californians in general is in any way commendable. And I said Californians, not transplants that learned good work ethic in another state then brought it here like myself. I'd have to assume you are in that group too since there is a microscopic chance that you are a California native that somehow gravitated to the Buckeyes.

  • I work for the post office and we have two feeds of electricity coming into the building through two busses that are split to prevent total loss of power if one goes down. Well we had a power glitch that temporarily knocked out one leg and tied the busses. When I went to flip the switch to split them. I accidentally turned the wrong one and knocked out power to the entire building for half an hour. No mail got processed until I fixed it and it put us behind. Until you are the cause of shutting down operations that has hundreds of employees sitting on their hands you have not messed up that bad. I have done this procedure hundreds of times and I just locked in on the wrong switch.

There's not enough space here to list all my screw-ups. And besides, the 24/7 servers would probably go down because of all the typing.

Just don't let your mistakes define who you think you are. They liked you when they hired you and they weren't wrong. If they were, they'd deserve to be fired too, wouldn't they?

The only sin in making a mistake is not learning from it. If you were at fault, own up to it and don't make the same mistake again. But don't beat yourself up over it. There's only been one perfect human being ...and they crucified him.

This is an excellent post.... thank you for your refreshing honesty and concern for others!!!! When I have some votes I'll up vote you!!! PS... I'm a headhunter so I know a lot about work place issues...

A guy that got fired right before I started my one job 6 years ago was written up 3 times for talking about personal stuff at work.

Now this is a super relaxed work place, I've never been written up in all my years for my mistakes because I'm generally a really good employee.

The guy was talking about his rape case against him by his ex girlfriend that he had to go and fight in court, among other things. Holy shit dude, keep your mouth shut. By the way he was the current boyfriend of another employee's daughter.

I'd fall into this category. What are the odds?!

  • I worked in a particular profession for 45 years..never got fired...here are some rules to follow:
    a) Always be at work earlier than your boss.
    b) make your self(in your job)un-fireable..not replaceable due to your work skills.
    c) never talk or down-grade the "work family" to the "work family".
d)get along wiht everybody, even the "hard to like people".
e)get know to the higher -ups by your work performance and skills.
    f) always look busy.....at work...slackers and those who seem "not necessary- are not necessary
    g) vollenteer for hard tasks...make yourself "needed" by you boss...

  • I had a very similar experience..no fun. I know exactly how you feel. I've worked nights for twenty plus years. I also prepared a product that had already been prepared. It wasn't in it's customary place, there was some lack of communication, nonetheless it was lack of diligence on my part. It resulted in 400-500 dollars of waste. I fully expected at least a reprimand, none came.

I'm like you, have always considered myself to be a good employee with a strong work ethic. I've never taken my job for granted. Fortunately I must have built up enough of a bank of good will that nothing ever came of it, but damn did I beat myself up. I think you'll have a similar outcome.

I don't know how long you've been on nights, but there's a reason a disproportionate number of workplace accidents happen on third shift. It 'taint natural. Some nights you know you're in a fog and you've gotta be really, really careful. Other times you can think you're just fine, but you're really not altogether there. The old synapses just aren't connecting like they should. It can be really stressful. I'm finally getting ready to go to days. I always did it for the money and schedule (eight on six off). It got really hard to get adequate sleep as my kids got older.

Probably my worst experience was when I fell asleep about mid morning behind the wheel, after working the night before. I never thought it would happen to me, and it only happened once in twenty years. I'm eternally grateful that I didn't kill anybody. My cars' alarm woke me as I was heading over the curb into the marsh. Fortunately it was low tide. I know you know this, but if you ever feel yourself nodding, even a little, pull over and take a nap. I was less than a mile from my house.

Didn't mean to digress. Good luck, don't get too down on yourself. Got a feeling you'll be fine.

  • I have one. My first job was working for a small construction company owned by my dad's friend during the summer. One of my jobs was to take this old Ford tractor and cut grass to prepare lots or just make open lots in the development look better. Well the gas gauge was messed up so you had to be extra careful since it was diesel. Well one day I finished the day mowing, but had to start the next doing another lot, I swore I had filled it up when I left, and so didn't think or check things the next day. Well I hadn't and I ran it out of gas.

Luckily my boss was a pretty good guy and so he didn't get too mad. He had also made some questionable calls with me, like handing me the keys to his truck, some rope, and a chainsaw (which I had never used before) and told me to cut this 30 or so ft. tree down that was about 10 ft. from one of the apartments he owned. I was scared shit to do that.

Oh and the Guys I worked with actually loved the mistake with the tractor, because the one was a pretty good mechanic and for a few days got to take it out to his barn and work on it instead of working at the job we were currently at.
