For songwriting I go with Jimmy Page.
For individual guitar playing...Hendrix. The guy created a sound that was unheard of back in the 60's.

I don't know whether that was a compliment for 60's music or indicating us old-timers didn't deserve that "unheard of" music LOL. What do you think we listened to? The best are from the 60's and 70's.

lol. My bad man. I am a classic rock fan myself so it was not a jab at the music of the 60's and 70's by any means. I have always felt that Hendrix was a one of a kind in style. I can't think of another guitarist that gives me the chills like Hendrix does. When I think of the 60's I think of the Stones, Beatles, Dylan, Doors, etc. In my humble opinion Hendrix created a sound that had not been heard of at that point. That's all. No disrespect intended.

When we were young, we had two sets of neighbors that had pretty darn good bands, and those guitarists guys were historians of the art of guitar playing, and who the cream of the crap was. And cream of the crop meaning not who is top 40 or popular, but who is a technician and the best of the best.
Almost always, Jeff Beck and Frank Zappa came up with Jimmy Page.
Zappa was extremely off the wall as it gets, but he could hum a guitar.

I will always remember Roy Clark doing a piece on Hee Haw that was the best accoustic performance I have ever seen. Extremely intense, he was sweating bullets but what a great bit of guitar work. Found it on You Tube. It was a hollow body electric not an accoustic

Dickey Betts, Duane Allman, Mark Knopfler, Clapton, and Page are my favorites. One of the best performances I ever saw was Jeff "Skunk" Baxter when he was with the Doobie Bros. They were playing in Pittsburgh with Boston, but Boston's gear never made it so the Doobies put on an extraordinary show. Baxter sat for nearly the entire show but he was gettin all night long.

Clapton has to be one of the most over-rated guitarist of all time. I saw him in concert recently. He's not even the best guitarist in his own band. He clearly got outplayed by his lead guitarist. Never understood the infatuation with him. Great musician. Decent guitar player.

Don't for get he is 67 years old. Im sure he isn't what he used to be.
