I have no problem with a person committing to the vegan diet but I have never quite understood it. You can eat healthy without giving up all animal related foods. I used to think people became vegetarians because they were animal rights activists but Im not sure if that's correct anymore or not.
Perhaps the vegans of the forums can share their reasons for this extreme commitment. Is it a health thing? An animal rights thing? ...

Health benefit is one reason but I am becoming more aware/educated on the disgusting treatment of animals. The more I know the easier it is for me to stay away from animal products; although I must admit a cheesy pizza with banana peppers and mushrooms is hard to resist!!! Most of the Vegan's that I know will say the same; health and treatment of animals both played a role in their choice of diet. FYI...I'm not some crazy PETA person that throws my views in other peoples faces just making a decision that I feel comfortable with. To each there own.

A friend who is a distance runner recently went vegan. He says he feels better. His energy level is through the roof. One thing that convinced him to go this direction was he saw where a number of top MMA fighters were vegan. A distance runner is probably not a good comparison but an MMA fighter is.

I would imagine going vegan as an elite athlete takes a significant amount of discipline to keep up strength while sticking to the diet. If this is something he can commit to, then maybe we're seeing some significant steps toward the maturity he needs to be a succesful, big time college athlete. Interesting move.
