O.T. Greatest NFL RB?

  • 1. Jim Brown
    2. Walter Payton (for the majority of his career his teams were AWFUL, I'm the RUN dominated NFL)
    3. Earl Campbell ( as Urban says...Grown ass man!)
    4. Barry Sanders ( he was EXCITING, but also feast or famine, huge games or below average)
    5. TIE: Kevin Mack, Eric Metcalf, Greg Pruitt, Mike Pruitt, Earnest Byner.. LOL ( I love my Browns!)

    Duane

  • LOL. I was the biggest Herman Moore fan. Wayne Fontes and QB play really held that team back. Dallas was untouchable with Jimmy Johnson. I believe they could have won 5 super bowls if he was not fired. Biggest Mistake Jerry ever made. He is still paying for that decision.

Hahaha..you brought up a good one....

Campbell was hell-on-wheels.......a ferocious running style. He and Franco Harris were pretty much 180 degrees apart on how to deal with a tackler.

For my money Leroy Kelly was better than any of the Brownies you mentioned.

  • Jim Brown. Nobody has a more impressive profile, besides perhaps Otto Graham. Just look at how many times and how many categories he lead the league in. Look at how many all-pro first teams he was named to. For the record, I'm a New York Jets fan, so I love Curtis Martin more than any other running back, but without a doubt, Brown was the best. I would say Barry Sanders is a close second.

This. Seriously overlooked, he came up small in a lot of big games.

Jim Brown, then the discussion begins for who's next.

As great as Barry Sanders was, his own father made it a point to tell him many times that he wasn't in Jim Brown's league. That's good enough for me.

Emmitt had a terrific line and Super Bowl talent all around him. Sanders played for the Lions. Huge difference.

  • Jim Brown and then everyone else. Gayle Sayers may have pushed him a little barring injury. Incredible back.

Perhaps this was motivation by his father to make him want to the best? Myself, if my father told me this it would motivate me even more to be the best.

The Barry - Emmitt deal is interesting. People knock Emmitt for having great players around him, which he did.

So Barry got all of his yards on his own? When Barry went well over 2,000, nobody was blocking? And to say Barry would have made Emmitt look foolish, understand this: The year Barry went over 2,000 he had very few after two games because he was playing with a fullback. They changed things around after that. He needed multiple receivers on the field to spread things out.

Look at the playoff numbers. If you want flash and highlights, go with Barry. Want to move the chains and win games, E Smith.

All I am going to point out is that for a couple years, Emmitt had undoubtedly one of the best OLines in the history of football. I dont even need to bring up all of the HOF talent at the skill positions around him with a line like he had.

If Barry was running behind an OLine of L. Allen, Eric Williams, Nate Newton, and Tuinei, he would have all the records. And lets not forget, Barry retired in his prime with easily 3-4 years left on his legs.

I really think you need to separate between Pre-Modern Era and Modern Era to include guys like Grange, Nagurski, Nevers and Thorpe. But since we dont do that:

    1-Barry Sanders- Best Runner ever
2-Walter Payton-Best all around football player ever
3-JB- Biggest winner of the genetic lottery for his era
4-Gale Sayers- Career cut too short so he gets left out of the conversation too often
5-Faulk- Players that helped transformed the position by catching the ball.

  • I believe the discussion can only be around three players 1) Jim Brown 2) OJ Simpson and 3) Barry Sanders. Given how old you are will keep this debate going on forever. One name not mentioned that I believe would have been in this discussion if he had a longer career is BO JACKSON. Barring injuries I believe he would have been the greatest ever. Just an amazing combination of quickness, power, speed and attitude!

My mom is from Pittsburgh. I wrote Franco Harris a letter as a kid and he hand wrote me a letter back with an autographed picture. I forgot about him, gonna have to edit my list cause I like him, just not sure where his place in history is.

ESPN has a 30 in 30 episode on Bo this Saturday at 9.

I hope it is good. Bo was one of my favorite players.
