It's not a knock to say that Emmitt Smith played with great players, it's just a fact. There were years where his offensive line was AMAZING. I remember a stat one year where Smith was averaging either 3.5 or 4 yards a carry BEFORE contact. I'll never forget that. Think about that. You are a runningback and you can get 4 yards before you're even touched?
Smith is a HOF running back, but he's not in the top 5 of any skill set. He was really good at everything, great at nothing (maybe vision).
I think Jim Brown is the best hands down. His career stats, particularly the per game averages, and durability are basically unmatched.

Motley was a great Brown and well deserving of the HOF. He had a 5.7 Y/A, but he played only 4 of his years in the NFL where he averaged 5.0 Y/A and the other 4 in the AAFC where he averaged over 6 Y/A. My dad always talked about Motley, just loved him. Legend had him approaching 280 lbs, but he was listed at 6-1 232, which was mammoth for back then. Dude also returned kickoffs; can you imagine breaking the wedge and seeing this guy coming full speed at you, with no facemasks by the way.

Crazy if you think about it. What are the odds of having a Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas both on your team in college? I'd like to know who was the guy who recruited and found those 2.
