OT: I want a dog

  • I strongly urge you to get a rescue dog. We have rescued 2 and they could not have been better. Very often the dogs at shelters are purebreds that people get rid of for one reason or another.
I suggest you consider an Old English Sheepdog. Our Webster was the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever had. They have hair so they do not shed. They are very protective of their owner and do well around children. Most consider themselves lapdogs in spite of their size.

We had to put him down a year ago and I still pine for him each day. He was a gem.

  • Everyone opinion is just that.. an opinion. My dad is breeder, nothing wrong with that. And nothing wrong with rescue dogs either. As long as u stay away from puppy mills u will be fine. That said I love my boxer, only breed I enjoy more are my 2 pits. Best way to find out what will fit you is go spend time with several breeds and see what fits your life style.

  • EDIT to add: "when you walk your beagle pup... girls will hound you relentlessly (that's a good thing!) banana"

They'll be on you faster than Brady Choke at a Golden Corrall.

It's funny you guys brought this up. I take my Westie pup for long walks, usually about 4 or 5 miles, to get her outside and burn up some of that energy I was walking Leila down Plumas St and I got stopped by 4 hot college girls who literally pulled over in a BMW X5 to pet her. If I had known this dog was going to be such a babe magnet I would have gotten one in my early 30's. Leila is so friendly that those girls were just going crazy over her.

  • Australian Cattle Dogs are the most intelligent, athletic dogs on the planet(I bred them for 10 years). BUT, you better be an active person> they are a working breed & require exercise & activity. They are loyal to a fault (socialize them when young) and you will have a forever friend! Beware, they will be smarter than any girlfriend you will ever have!

My Texas heeler (aussie shepherd aussie cattle dog mix) is one year old she is energy incarnate. She is also the smartest dog I have ever owned we trained her to ring a bell when ever she had to go out in the first week but then had to take the bell down because she figured out that if she rang rhe Bell we would open the door and it became a game. I must have opened that door a hundred times before I figured out she was just doing it to get me to open the door and would just go back and lay down on the couch. Lots of classes at pet smart and socialization she just finished the canine good citizen qualification and is the sweetest dog. She loves playing with my 14 week old pup but since he has been suffering from an upper respiratory infection she just checks on him constantly to make sure he's ok.

  • I have 2 rescue dogs that are complete mutts. They are terrific dogs only cost $160. I will never get a dog from a breeder the rest of my life simply because there are so many dogs out there that need homes.

That being said however... If you want to find a quality breeder and get a purebred, then go for it. I have no issues with anyone who wants a certain breed. I had a golden retriever growing up and loved that dog. I just recommend doing your research and make sure you find a reputable one.

This is one of my dogs, that we believe is a pointer mix.

  • what kida dog you looking for I have english labs due around christmas they make great pets and are very smart.

    ptbuckeye

  • Doug....definately a pointer mix by that pic. My GSP has the same looking face only all dark brown. The white flecks are also very much GSP. GSP's are mutts in their own right..a mix of about 6 different dogs.

I would not recommend either of my dogs for a college student...and I take umbrage over the person that thinks Aussie Sheep Dogs are the best athletes. My Weimaraner was the premier dogathlete as far as stamina, running, jumping, swimming and large enough to scare you off my property.

My GSP is just as smart as a whip. High, high energy dogs...going to make her a dock diver and already a good bird dog. Hard to tell about my new Weim pup..she's just a clumzy sweetheart right now...but I'm betting she'll be an Olympic athlete herself. As I said..if dogs had to be classified as football players..I got Tedd Ginn Jr. and Terry Glenn dogs.
