OT- I'm getting a dog...Don't know anything. Help!

  • Would appreciate any help or pointers you guys have.

    Here is the deal:

I am 30. I own my own place in the Bay Area. Got a small back area and side yard. This is California so when I say small, I'm talking like you can throw a BBQ and play some beer pong but you're not playing sports back here. The good news is that I live literally right next to a 13 mile creek trail. I have had roommates but have resolved myself to turn my place from a frat house to a bachelor pad. Been mulling a dog of late, more so than I have in the past. I work from home. Sometimes I work crazy hours (18 hour days). I have terrible habits in regards to daily routine and work and think a dog would help and be a good companion.

Was looking to maybe adopt after some home improvement stuff was done but my friend started selling me on one particular dog. She is the wife of a friend (I was his best man) and they have a cute little terrier mix that they adopted. She works at Facebook and was recently walking around their headquarters as there is a trail around the campus that is somewhat scenic and this little dog came up to her. No tags and she was drawn to it since it looked like their dog. Brought it to the pound and they cleaned it up, microchipped it, neutered him, and held him for 2 weeks. Now he was up for adoption and she impulsively adopted it hoping she could foster until someone they knew would adopt.

Their landlord said no to them having 2 dogs and they already named it Brutus knowing that I would be more likely to adopt it. So yes...having never owned a dog or knowing anything about dogs, the attached photo is what is coming my way on the weekend.

They already got it a crate and say it's crate trained. Saw the dog 2-3x and it seems very chill. It's 2 years old and I'm going to the vet this week to get a make sure all is well. Probably going to get a doggy door thingy for my back glass sliding door. Need to clean out the yard a bit.

Some girl i know is going to drop off some books. I'll read some stuff on the web. Total rookie. Any advice would be great. I really don't know anything. Thans in advance.

  • he can roam a bit in the yard and I'm home during the day so it wouldn't be locked up. I'm here.

  • 1) Make sure you have enough time to spend with it...
    2) Best advice I can ever give you is don't EVER feed it food from your plate, no people food at all and you'll never have to worry about him/her begging or bothering people you have over for their food. I can leave a steak on my plate on the coffee table and my dog won't even go near it because she's only been given dog food/treats from day one.
    3) Give it its' own "safe" place. A big cushion/bed on the floor that's theirs, they will lay on it and not your furniture. I have one in family room and one in bedroom. When it storms my dog goes to the one in the bedroom because she feels safe. Oh yeah, be ready for freak outs over thunderstorms.

Dogs are the best friends in the world. like the old saying goes, "Lock your wife/GF and your dog in the trunk of your car for an hour, when you open it, which one is happy to see you and still loves you"

  • For a new dog owner I would suggest training classes. Pet smart has them for $85 it is actually training for you to be able to train the dog. And just be consistent dogs don't do well with confusing commands. Most important is get ready for the best friend you have ever had he will love you unconditionally.

  • And whenever you can, take the dog with you in the car....I used to take mine to the golf course with me in my golf cart and she'd chase geese, ducks or squirrels while I hit my shot then she'd jump right back in the cart.

goes to my previous comments, make sure you have enough time to spend with them. If you are just running a quick errand, take her with you, it will speed up the bonding process and just flat out make her happy. Nothing better than seeing a car/truck going down the road with a dog hanging its' head out the window.

  • Agree with bestofthebig about giving it a place that is theirs.

I would recommend using the crate. My dog is 2.5 years and loves hers. Put it under a table or throw a towel over it to create a den for them. It's their own personal space where they feel safe.

  • Good for you man. The only thing you need to remember is that you are about to become this dogs world. You are going to be the center of its universe. Don't make the commitment unless you are dedicated enough to take the time to make that dogs life as good as possible through companionship and care taking. Dogs love you with all they have so you have to make sure you make the time to reciprocate that. If you do, you'll find it to be a very rewarding relationship. Best of luck to you.

Since the dog is two it should be past it's puppy destructive phase. If you notice the dog has got in the trash or torn something up, that's a dead giveaway the dog is in need of some exercise and the release of energy.

The food tip above was also a good one. Also be clear and strict on any limitations you want to set for the dog. They can learn almost anything. My in laws have their dog trained that he's not allowed in the carpeted areas of the house.

Also, if your dog gets loose and runs off, don't chase it. Be calm and confident to get the dog to follow you back home. If they sense you are tense or are chasing them for capture, they will continue to flee. It's great to develop the trust with your dog to let them off leash and them not running off. Dogs want to follow us, so if slowly given the freedom you can achieve this too.

Last I leave you with my favorite dog quote: "a dog is the only friend you'll have who loves you more than it loves itself"

    What this guy said.

Training: Take the classes at a PetSmart or PetCo if they offer them. If you need treats for training I've found Cheerios (the plain kind) to be the best option since you will go through a lot and they are healthy.

Food: Feed x2 a day... measure the food. By doing this the dog will not get overweight.

Walking: Letting the dog out is good, walking is the best option... if their is a dog park nearby that is also a good option. The rule of thumb here is a tired dog is a happy dog.

  • I personally hate locking my dogs up in the kennel all day, I let them both roam and just have plenty of toys. But I also let them on the couch when we are home.

Dogs need stability and need some structure. Whatever you do, if you get the dog. KEEP IT! I HATE when people get a dog then a life situation changes (IE having a baby) and they get rid of it. The dog should be a family member, not a throw away toy...

Haha! My wife and I are about to have our first at the end of the year, so I'll let you know then! Lol

Also, with food... Buy the nice, expensive brands IMO (Blue, taste of the wild for mine) it's better for them, they like it more and don't eat as much. Only down side is, they fart alot because it has a lot of raw proteins

  • Man, this thread has taken some turns. Started out pretty good, a couple good dog stories, then it turned sad, talking about losing our dogs and now we got dog farts in it....LOL.....
