1) Make sure you have enough time to spend with it...
2) Best advice I can ever give you is don't EVER feed it food from your plate, no people food at all and you'll never have to worry about him/her begging or bothering people you have over for their food. I can leave a steak on my plate on the coffee table and my dog won't even go near it because she's only been given dog food/treats from day one.
3) Give it its' own "safe" place. A big cushion/bed on the floor that's theirs, they will lay on it and not your furniture. I have one in family room and one in bedroom. When it storms my dog goes to the one in the bedroom because she feels safe. Oh yeah, be ready for freak outs over thunderstorms.

Dogs are the best friends in the world. like the old saying goes, "Lock your wife/GF and your dog in the trunk of your car for an hour, when you open it, which one is happy to see you and still loves you"

And whenever you can, take the dog with you in the car....I used to take mine to the golf course with me in my golf cart and she'd chase geese, ducks or squirrels while I hit my shot then she'd jump right back in the cart.

goes to my previous comments, make sure you have enough time to spend with them. If you are just running a quick errand, take her with you, it will speed up the bonding process and just flat out make her happy. Nothing better than seeing a car/truck going down the road with a dog hanging its' head out the window.

Good for you man. The only thing you need to remember is that you are about to become this dogs world. You are going to be the center of its universe. Don't make the commitment unless you are dedicated enough to take the time to make that dogs life as good as possible through companionship and care taking. Dogs love you with all they have so you have to make sure you make the time to reciprocate that. If you do, you'll find it to be a very rewarding relationship. Best of luck to you.

Since the dog is two it should be past it's puppy destructive phase. If you notice the dog has got in the trash or torn something up, that's a dead giveaway the dog is in need of some exercise and the release of energy.

The food tip above was also a good one. Also be clear and strict on any limitations you want to set for the dog. They can learn almost anything. My in laws have their dog trained that he's not allowed in the carpeted areas of the house.

Also, if your dog gets loose and runs off, don't chase it. Be calm and confident to get the dog to follow you back home. If they sense you are tense or are chasing them for capture, they will continue to flee. It's great to develop the trust with your dog to let them off leash and them not running off. Dogs want to follow us, so if slowly given the freedom you can achieve this too.

Training: Take the classes at a PetSmart or PetCo if they offer them. If you need treats for training I've found Cheerios (the plain kind) to be the best option since you will go through a lot and they are healthy.

Food: Feed x2 a day... measure the food. By doing this the dog will not get overweight.

Walking: Letting the dog out is good, walking is the best option... if their is a dog park nearby that is also a good option. The rule of thumb here is a tired dog is a happy dog.

Already potty trained, the hard part is over...

Haha! My wife and I are about to have our first at the end of the year, so I'll let you know then! Lol

Also, with food... Buy the nice, expensive brands IMO (Blue, taste of the wild for mine) it's better for them, they like it more and don't eat as much. Only down side is, they fart alot because it has a lot of raw proteins
