  • Get a dog from the shelter. They need homes.

Don't get a pure bred. Get a mutt and get a female one at that. Less recessive genes to worry about due to the rampant inbreeding and females are smarter.

That's what I am doing as explained.

  • Not all terrier breeds are high energy/territorial, although many are (I'm looking at you, Jack Russell terrors). I have had two rat terriers (named because they were bred to hunt vermin and smaller game, not that they look like rats, uck) who were/are pretty standard for the breed, they are active outdoors, but are big couch potatoes inside, are very sweet, curious, and pretty darn smart, in addition to being velcro dogs.

Anyways, do you like the dog? (He sure does look like a cute mix.) All dogs have personalities. Does he obey your friend when she tells him to "sit" or "come" or whatever-being able to determine how trainable a dog is helps. If he is housetrained, then someone worked with him at some point. And let me tell you, the dog already being housetrained is HUGE. Has he shown any tendencies that might become issues (dominance, destructiveness, snapping, etc.)? If you like the dog, and dog has no red flags and is trainable, then this might be a wonderful partnership.

Other posters were right on when suggesting you take dog obedience classes- the classes will also train you in addition to your dog, and help you understand your dog better. Oh, and you might want to look into pet insurance-vets can be expensive!

Dogs are just wonderful creatures. They really are a blessing.

Dog is house trained but I don't know how he does with commands. I think I will take the classes just because I'm such a rookie and I had another friend end up with this terrible puggle who raises hell all the time. I don't think she got training. Better to do that.

I do like the dog. I was told he was very shy and scared of people at first but my friends tell me that everyday with them, he's much much better and doesn't really exhibit that anymore. Probably a bit traumatized from being abandoned and then being at the shelter. He let me pet him for a good 20 minutes and even near his mouth which I was told to test a bit. He seems very calm for the most part.

I think they are being honest with their assessment that they like his personality more than their dog which is a pretty nice dog.

Oh random question, even though I live in a pretty populated area the proximity to the creek/creek trail sees a lot of skunks, raccoons, and possums in my yard. Will he freak out due to this?

Couple more pics. Anybody want to guess what kind of mix it is? I have no idea and the shelter didn't want to guess.

Most likely, that dog will want to chase those little creatures. Hopefully he doesn't get into battle with any of them. Whether he freaks out has to do with his anxiety levels and how you handle it. As long as you don't show fear or excitement, it will help the dog relax. The more you take him out to he creek trail, the better.

After seeing the other pics, I think he might have mostly Jack Russell or Parson Russell genes with a little Rat Terrier. If that's the case, you have a hyper dog who likes to dig, hunt/chase small creatures like you listed, escape from your house/yard, will make a good watch dog, will crave attention, and will need to be exercised. He'll be fun and energetic during the day and wanting to sleep on your lap at night. You're gonna need to be on your toes with this one...lol. They can be a handful unless trained well. Or maybe you'll get lucky and have one that's already well trained.

  • Friend of mine is a great dog trainer who takes troubled dogs and turns them into great family dogs. He has a bunch of youtube videos that are pretty easy to follow.

Also, get a doggie treadmill. You can use it to suppliment your daily walks with the dog to help it realease any pent up energy.
