Most likely, that dog will want to chase those little creatures. Hopefully he doesn't get into battle with any of them. Whether he freaks out has to do with his anxiety levels and how you handle it. As long as you don't show fear or excitement, it will help the dog relax. The more you take him out to he creek trail, the better.

After seeing the other pics, I think he might have mostly Jack Russell or Parson Russell genes with a little Rat Terrier. If that's the case, you have a hyper dog who likes to dig, hunt/chase small creatures like you listed, escape from your house/yard, will make a good watch dog, will crave attention, and will need to be exercised. He'll be fun and energetic during the day and wanting to sleep on your lap at night. You're gonna need to be on your toes with this one...lol. They can be a handful unless trained well. Or maybe you'll get lucky and have one that's already well trained.

Here is the deal:

I am 30. I own my own place in the Bay Area. Got a small back area and side yard. This is California so when I say small, I'm talking like you can throw a BBQ and play some beer pong but you're not playing sports back here. The good news is that I live literally right next to a 13 mile creek trail. I have had roommates but have resolved myself to turn my place from a frat house to a bachelor pad. Been mulling a dog of late, more so than I have in the past. I work from home. Sometimes I work crazy hours (18 hour days). I have terrible habits in regards to daily routine and work and think a dog would help and be a good companion.

Was looking to maybe adopt after some home improvement stuff was done but my friend started selling me on one particular dog. She is the wife of a friend (I was his best man) and they have a cute little terrier mix that they adopted. She works at Facebook and was recently walking around their headquarters as there is a trail around the campus that is somewhat scenic and this little dog came up to her. No tags and she was drawn to it since it looked like their dog. Brought it to the pound and they cleaned it up, microchipped it, neutered him, and held him for 2 weeks. Now he was up for adoption and she impulsively adopted it hoping she could foster until someone they knew would adopt.

Their landlord said no to them having 2 dogs and they already named it Brutus knowing that I would be more likely to adopt it. So yes...having never owned a dog or knowing anything about dogs, the attached photo is what is coming my way on the weekend.

They already got it a crate and say it's crate trained. Saw the dog 2-3x and it seems very chill. It's 2 years old and I'm going to the vet this week to get a make sure all is well. Probably going to get a doggy door thingy for my back glass sliding door. Need to clean out the yard a bit.

Some girl i know is going to drop off some books. I'll read some stuff on the web. Total rookie. Any advice would be great. I really don't know anything. Thans in advance.

Little update. I asked for Brutus to get checked out at the vet before taking him so I went today. Never been to a vet before. The dude was really thorough and helpful. Said Brutus is between 1-2 and is some type of terrier mix but it was hard to tell.

Checked out his back right leg as sometime he has favored it. Said it was okay and probably a recent sprain.

Brutus has a mild "kennel cough" from his time at the pound. Used to have fleas and bit off some fur on his back but that's already healing.

Took blood for heart worms. The appointment was free since it's an adopted dog so that was cool. Basically nothing was an issue.

My friend also told me that the pound was thinking of potentially putting down the dog because he was too shy. I didn't know that was a reason a dog could be put down. He is very docile but he doesn't seem that shy. I think he was just traumatized and is getting back in the swing of things. Already playing with other dogs and doesn't seem to avoid humans at all.

I'll be taking possession of him on Sunday and will go buy all that stuff. Probably get a doggy door extension for my back sliding door. I'll get his crate that he currently has.

Here is a video of the little dude. Getting pretty stoked. Would certainly be nice to beat Michigan State and then start bonding with the guy.
