OT- I'm getting a dog...Don't know anything. Help!

  • All trash containers in closets or up.
Guess she will like it out of the cage as soon as she gets the hang of the dog door.
If she jumps on you, extend your knee and she will stop.
Get a choke chain and teach her to heel so she does not drag you all over.
Should be over chewing at 2, but not necessarily so what your furniture legs.
Give her chew leather bones of her size.
Have trained AKC Brittany Spaniels, terriers, Maltese, labs, and King Charles Spaniels. I like the King Charles the best for temperament. Terriers have a lot of energy and the one I had did not like to be alone and barked. It was a rescue dog. Had to give it to a family that was there all day long.
    Socialize ASP with kids, adults.
Any questions, glad to help....one of my Brittany Spaniels won obedience class at 6 months old 500 dogs in Cincinnati.

Most likely, that dog will want to chase those little creatures. Hopefully he doesn't get into battle with any of them. Whether he freaks out has to do with his anxiety levels and how you handle it. As long as you don't show fear or excitement, it will help the dog relax. The more you take him out to he creek trail, the better.

After seeing the other pics, I think he might have mostly Jack Russell or Parson Russell genes with a little Rat Terrier. If that's the case, you have a hyper dog who likes to dig, hunt/chase small creatures like you listed, escape from your house/yard, will make a good watch dog, will crave attention, and will need to be exercised. He'll be fun and energetic during the day and wanting to sleep on your lap at night. You're gonna need to be on your toes with this one...lol. They can be a handful unless trained well. Or maybe you'll get lucky and have one that's already well trained.

Is the dog with the big ears and spot on its back your friend's dog, with the other one being the foster dog that you would adopt? If so, friend definitely has a Jack Russell/rat terrier mix. Your dog is harder to figure out, he is the prototypical little white dog, but surely has some terrier in him. Cute little thing. Poor dog is probably traumatized, as you suggested-if it is housebroken, it probably had a home and can't figure out what happened. Would bet that it will come out of its shell more as it adjusts. If you are around the house working, you and Dog will be fine. When I worked from home, I enjoyed having my dog around.

Agree with another poster, you do have to leash your dog outside of your property, as chances are he will go bounding after the critters. Our rattie will go after anything that moves-including deer, toads, bees and fireflies, sigh. Old rattie had no interest in such things.

Oh, and just my feminine opinion, but if I was a cute young thing and saw you walking that dog (especially if he had a Buckeye collar on), I would DEFINITELY come up and coo at that cute dog/ask to pet him and chat you up. Cute dog plus rescue story equals possibilities.

  • First of all, dont get a dog if you dont have time for it! Its soo sad to see the wonderful little creatures who just love us soo much not being able to get outside or to just have someone around to play with them...keep them company. Dogs are social pack animals and you will be the other member of the pack. One of my great joys is coming home from work and playing on the floor with my lil buddy...Bups. The other dog is older and doesnt really like men, he likes my wife. Its all good.

2nd, take care of them from a health standpoint. We have two dogs (Bichons) and last year the older one ruptured a disc jumping up onto our bed...two options, hope it heals on its own, no guarantee, or have surgery for $4500 bucks!!! We feel like when you get a dog, you make a commitment to them. They are beings that are very much like us, at least like us when we are 3 - 4 yrs old...lol!

Finally, dont be afraid to let them go when they get old, its very tempting to just try and keep them patched up forever, just so they are alive. Pets, doint really know when to go because they are driven by the need to be with us, so we have to let them go and do whats best for them, once we have tried everything else possible of course.

    Dude, dogs are awesome!

I'd never spend 4500 dollars on a surgery for my dog, sorry. I love her but she is still just a pet.

Would appreciate any help or pointers you guys have.

    Here is the deal:

I am 30. I own my own place in the Bay Area. Got a small back area and side yard. This is California so when I say small, I'm talking like you can throw a BBQ and play some beer pong but you're not playing sports back here. The good news is that I live literally right next to a 13 mile creek trail. I have had roommates but have resolved myself to turn my place from a frat house to a bachelor pad. Been mulling a dog of late, more so than I have in the past. I work from home. Sometimes I work crazy hours (18 hour days). I have terrible habits in regards to daily routine and work and think a dog would help and be a good companion.

Was looking to maybe adopt after some home improvement stuff was done but my friend started selling me on one particular dog. She is the wife of a friend (I was his best man) and they have a cute little terrier mix that they adopted. She works at Facebook and was recently walking around their headquarters as there is a trail around the campus that is somewhat scenic and this little dog came up to her. No tags and she was drawn to it since it looked like their dog. Brought it to the pound and they cleaned it up, microchipped it, neutered him, and held him for 2 weeks. Now he was up for adoption and she impulsively adopted it hoping she could foster until someone they knew would adopt.

Their landlord said no to them having 2 dogs and they already named it Brutus knowing that I would be more likely to adopt it. So yes...having never owned a dog or knowing anything about dogs, the attached photo is what is coming my way on the weekend.

They already got it a crate and say it's crate trained. Saw the dog 2-3x and it seems very chill. It's 2 years old and I'm going to the vet this week to get a make sure all is well. Probably going to get a doggy door thingy for my back glass sliding door. Need to clean out the yard a bit.

Some girl i know is going to drop off some books. I'll read some stuff on the web. Total rookie. Any advice would be great. I really don't know anything. Thans in advance.

I am a dog trainer so would be glad to give u any advice on specific questions. Dogs are a lot like people they have differnt temperments , needs ect it depends on breed ect, if he is crate trained that is good it means if u leave him put him in crate and he won't crap. In it why u are gone and won't tear up the house if he is loose. Congrats on getting mans best friend .

  • Little update. I asked for Brutus to get checked out at the vet before taking him so I went today. Never been to a vet before. The dude was really thorough and helpful. Said Brutus is between 1-2 and is some type of terrier mix but it was hard to tell.

Checked out his back right leg as sometime he has favored it. Said it was okay and probably a recent sprain.

Brutus has a mild "kennel cough" from his time at the pound. Used to have fleas and bit off some fur on his back but that's already healing.

Took blood for heart worms. The appointment was free since it's an adopted dog so that was cool. Basically nothing was an issue.

My friend also told me that the pound was thinking of potentially putting down the dog because he was too shy. I didn't know that was a reason a dog could be put down. He is very docile but he doesn't seem that shy. I think he was just traumatized and is getting back in the swing of things. Already playing with other dogs and doesn't seem to avoid humans at all.

I'll be taking possession of him on Sunday and will go buy all that stuff. Probably get a doggy door extension for my back sliding door. I'll get his crate that he currently has.

Here is a video of the little dude. Getting pretty stoked. Would certainly be nice to beat Michigan State and then start bonding with the guy.

  • Putting a dog down because it's to shy? WTF?

But the rest is good news, glad everything is working out.

Congratulations Benny! Nothing like the companionship of a dog.

As many have stated, you are the dog's world, so keep that in mind if you get mad (which you will). As others have said, and especially since he's a little guy, feed him some good quality food and keep it on a schedule, makes it easy for him and for you.

    Hope you enjoy him!!
