OT - Scotch and Bourbon suggestions

  • Need to take a gift to a dear friend that has had some tough times as of late. He likes Bourbon and Scotch and so I want to surprise him with a bottle this coming weekend. Of course I am going to help him drink it.

I enjoy Lagavulin Scotch which is about the highest I may go on price. Bourbon, is usually less expensive so I know there is more to choose from. I am looking for something unique.

So I am open to any suggestions.

Bourbons I enjoy - Bookers, Woodford Reserve, Makers and Makers 46, Elijah Craig, and 1792.

Scotchs much less I have had - Lagavulin (currently my favorite), Macallan Fine Oak 10 year, Glenfiddich Single Barrel 12 year and that is about it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance...

How bad of times? I'd never buy this for myself...but I'd love for someone else to think so much of me!

  • Scotch. Balvenie double wood is out standing, they sell it in 12 15 & 18 year old varieties ranging from 50- 100 bucks a bottle.

Bourbon- Elijah Craig is an outstanding 20.00 bottle of 12 year old small batch bourbon.

  • I really enjoy Pinch scotch, it's not a single malt but still very good, kinda hard to find though. Very unique bottle as well.

I am a Scotch enthusiast and Lagavulin is currently my #1 in the 50-75 range. Here are some others I would recommend in the price range:

    -*****Lagavulin 16
-*****Glenmorangie Nectar d'or: fantastic, light sweet, smooth, best of Glenmorangie's at a lowish price.

-****JW Gold for a blend, has a smooth finish with a hint of honey.
-****Jura (another Islay Malt very similar to Lagavulin), very smokey Islay.
-****Auchentoshan 3 wood, 12 year. Very smooth for a 12.
-****Oban 14. Fruity, bit of seaweed,
-****Aberlour abunadh, Cask strength (120proof), serves great on the rocks. Strong, but so smooth that it does not scorch your throught.

-***Glenlivet Nadurra. I am not normally a Glenlivet fan, but if I must get Glenlivet, the Nadurra 16 is the way to go.

    Hope this helps.

  • I personally prefer the Islay scotchs like Lagavulin as well. If you can find it, check out Ardbeg. It is as peaty and smokey as it gets when it comes to a good Islay. It really unique and not one you see often. Its not one you will ever find in a restaurant either and its only like 55$.

  • My wife does not understand my obsession with Scotch and why I must have so many different bottles. To her, she cannot taste the differnece and she really doesn't care for it.

I probably have about 20 open bottles right now (and about 15 unopened) ranging in price from 40-250 a bottle.

Thanks, I am going to see if I can find it. I may just have a Scotch tasting with my buddy.
