OT - The Avengers

  • I have to respectfully disagree with the thought that Thor was a great film. I found that the Asgard scenes were better than anything they filmed for earth. The Asgard scenes were very sound but not enough to save the movie from just being pretty good.

Capt. America was very good. There were some story and writing deficiencies but not enough to seriously harm the film. Thoroughly enjoyed it and bought it day 1.

As for the complain that Avengers was too light, funny, etc. compared to TDK's dark...Duh! TDK is exactly what it should be. Avengers is what it should be, to my understanding. TS/Ironman is a smart ass in everything for the most part. Capt. America is mostly serious. Thor (at this point) is still trying to figure out human thought and values and thus reacts differently to things. There's a difference between how Banner and Hulk deal with things. Hulk is almost playful in his reaction to the other "hero's" in knowing that he isn't really hurting them when he suddenly punches Thor as if saying "we're not finished". It was light, funny and serious when needed, just what I'd expect. Fury carried the serious, as he should have.

Avengers is not birthed to be dark like Batman. If you were hoping for that, I'm glad you didn't get it because it would mean that Joss didn't follow the novels.

If you know little about the works of Joss Whedon, enlighten yourself. If you have Netflix, rent the Firefly series. It's 12 episodes (only 8 aired) and chase it with the movie Serenity. Check out the show Dollhouse. The movie Cabin in the Woods (in theaters now). I haven't seen it but have heard good things about it from people with above average brain capability (if you're in the lowest common denominator group, avoid it).

  • I really enjoyed the Avengers, but I actually like Iron Man (1) better.

I really like the Tony Stark character and thought the plot of Iron Man was actually believable without any of the alien/god/Thor stuff.

I would rate the best superhero movies in this order:

    1) Dark Knight
    2) Iron Man
    3) Avengers

Sounds like you really just have an issue with the high scale fantasy universe of Avengers vs in Ironman where it was just an expansion on the real world with extra technology.

That also fits with liking the Dark Knight at number 1 (which is where I have it as well). There is nothing wrong with that view, and I would put Ironman behind Avengers for second place out of the new Marvel line of films.

For me I just recognize what each project is and judge it based on the quality of execution (for the most part, there are always exceptions where I just don't care for the concept).

I am on board with everything you posted aside from Captain America.

Thor was hit or miss. The film did a great job in Asgard with showing how this was all the result of a dysfunctional family. That is a very basic source of drama and conflict that is strong and speaks to almost everyone. There were a lot of great scenes that were executed well and made the film fun. On the other hand there are some issues. Two nights on Earth (IIRC) with a couple of people is enough to turn Thor around from spoiled brat to mature big brother? There was plenty missing with his arc. His friends were also very flat, pretty much just Thor's A team. They were loyal, but why? We didn't have any insight into any of them. The writers followed the standard procedures of giving them quirks and intricacies to make them seem more real, but didn't give it any weight.

Odin's reasons were missing pieces too. They were close, but things like why he stole Loki from the frost giants and then never explained his heritage to him are important. The writers just created a reason for Loki to become a villain with a good back story, but didn't make the puzzle fit together on the other end. Story crafting is challenging but things like this diminish the tension and the audiences connection to scenes, even if the effect is just subconscious.

I'm going to refrain from totally destroying Captain America with a full review, and just leave you with a more fun version of showing how glaring the issues were.
