OT Tiger Woods - The Big Miss

  • There have been some golf threads recently and a few about Tiger, so considering his big win this weekend and the release of his former golf coach Hank Haney's book, "The Big Miss," I thought this might lead to interesting discussion. I've included a link that lists 10 excerpts from the book, which are very interesting. First of all, I am in the camp that Haney should not have broken his confidentiality and published this stuff. I'm actually surprised that as careful as Woods is, that he didn't have Haney, or anyone close to him, sign some sort of confidentiality agreement.

I admit, I am a Woods fan. I don't like his behavior, and what Haney has to say basically reinforces that Woods is a dick. Maybe I root for him because I appreciate greatness. I don't know.

So, what does everyone think? Should Haney have written this book?

    A few interesting bits:

    1) Woods is very cheap
    2) Woods has a huge obsession with the Navy SEALS, and might have tore his ACL participating in military drills
    3) Woods only liked PGA players that didn't represent a competitive threat

    http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-tours-news/2012-03/photos-woods-haney#slide=1

EDIT: After you read the link about, check out this one on his SEALS obsession. WOW, is all I can say.

  • Not worth it for Haney IMO.

  • Being able to see possibly the greatest golfer in history is a true blessing for golf fans. I disapprove of Tiger's
Private issues as well, but I certainly have no right to cast stones..... Jack is still the greatest, statistically speaking, but Tiger has provided some of golfs most amazing moments over the last 20+ years..... I hope he gets it all back, simply because its amazing to watch! Think about it.... Ali, Jordan, Payton , and Woods.... all in the same life time...???? I feel lucky to have seen them all in their prime!

  • I have to agree with you. It seems very unprofessional to write a book about Tiger, especially since if it was any other golfer out there no one would care enough to buy it and read it. Although Haney was Tiger's swing coach, Tiger was the one who went out and won on the course, thus Haney is popular because of Tiger's success. I'm a huge Tiger fan, only as a golfer though. There is no debating the guy is a complete asshole but simply as an athlete i love watching him play the game. It is impressive to say the least. I also think when Tiger is winning it is great for the sport. Say what you will about the guy, but he brings in ratings and attention to the game. I think if im another golfer though and Haney wants to work with me, one now has to consider if this guy is gonna out all of my stuff in a book as well. Not a good move professionally on Haney's behalf IMO.

I have to agree with you. Haney must have known that his coaching days (at least with notable PGA players) would be over after this book because the trust factor would be gone. He probably calculated that he would make a fortune from the book, which would outweigh in his mind the loss of coaching earnings.

  • My wife and I have a friend who is a bartender at the Ritz Carlton.Nicest person you could ever hope to meet.

Tiger came into his bar and told him I do not want anyone coming at me for autographs. Our friend the bartender thought "How am I supposed to monitor that?"

A bit later a young girl about 12 years of age approached Tiger and asked for his autograph. He obliged.

Tiger and his friends ran up a $300+ bill with food and drinks. When Tiger left he wrote on the bill -" tip zero. I told you no autographs"

My opinion of Tiger, which had always been positive, changed dramatically and Haney's insight regarding Tiger being cheap and many others stated opinion that he is an A-Hole would seem to ring true.

This does not surprise me. You've got to believe the TV commentators are caught with mixed feelings. They undoubtedly can't stand him - probably David Feherty as an exception. I love Feherty to death, but he worships Tiger and it compromises him. The rest of them, Peter Kostis the most, looks like he'd rather gang raped than interview Tiger after a round. But....he knows that Tiger brings ratings, with me being among the viewers.

So...they have a conundrum: Have Tiger and worry about interviewing a dick cuz you have to; or not have Tiger, interview a nice guy glad for a win....with a TV share rating of 3. Not a good choice.

Jack has spent most of his adult life being approached by strangers who always want something from him (picture, autograph, advice, interview, conversation etc.). Same for Tiger Woods. That unwanted attention changes a person in a way that most of us will never have to worry about. I am not comfortable judging Jack or Tiger based on how they treat strangers. (Juding Tiger's private pecadillos while married is another matter).

Can you imagine what it must be like for them to have dinner or drinks in public? Imagine being interrupted dozens of times at dinner by someone who thinks they are entitled to your autograph or picture for free? Now imagine that experience repeated every day of your life. Something tells me that I would start getting pretty pissed off in no time.

    Fine....fair point.

Then again...it's the price you pay for fame and fortune. Tiger Woods' children and grandchildren will never have to work a day in their lives for a wage if they so choose. And it isn't the people trying to 'get something' from Nicklaus (or Woods in this case) that are making the commentary or quoted in this thread. It is everyday working people -- people just trying to get by like bartenders, locker room attendants, etc that have called out Woods for being a dick. And it's been a trend for quite some time, not a new phenomenon after he got his ***k caught in a wood-chipper (ouch).

Lastly, to this day, spanning an entire generation, Arnold Palmer can make a complete stranger in the gallery feel like he knows them. I have been at many tournaments seeing all three of them in my lifetime (Jack, Arnie and Tiger) and nobody exudes more warmth than Arnie. Yes, I am sure someone, somewhere was gilted by Arnie, but I would bet damn few. I recall an adage than old sales training salt once told me: "You have the choice when you interact with someone, no matter how briefly: You can either make their day a little bit better or a little bit worse. The choice is yours."

  • I'm torn on the book.

I respect Hank and like his show on Golf Channel.

I've always been a big fan of Tiger.

That being said, I've decided to not read the book because I want to live in the dark on this... Just my 2 cents.

  • I am surprised to see no comments on all of the Navy SEAL stuff. That is crazy that the Navy was actually setting up special ops training for Tiger. Highly recommend reading the link for those that have not done so.

  • Hank Haney just showed his true character. He has none for writing such a cowardly book. Arnie nailed more women than Tiger and its not even close but the "king" gets no grief for his exploits. Jack is portayed as a God but among people who know better he is far from it. The media and creeps like Haney are parasites living off others and exploiting them when the time is right.

I'm puzzled. Tim Tebow is a class act, with supposedly high morals and is ridiculed. Tiger is morally challenged and a bit of a jerk and has announcers and fans rooting for him to succeed. Is it because Tebow is Pro-Life and religious and the liberal media is Pro-Choice and secular?

  • Haney came on Mike & Mike this morning and defended his book. Saying it was all about golf.

No! It's because comparing Tim Tebow's skill level to Tiger Woods is LUDICROUS!!! Tebow is a gimmick, and he won't last... Tiger may end up being the best ever.... no comparison...

I approached jack for an autograph when I was about 11 years old. He denied me. He said "not now kid." that always stuck with me. I realize he can't/couldn't sign all autographs but he could have scribbled an X on that paper and I would have been happy. can't win em' all. lol

that being said, I continued to root for him.
