I cant wait till the opener I think we made some improvements we lost a few guys a liked but we cut a lot of dead weight and overall have a much better team. I expect them to make playoffs.
Btw penn st boards have some cool soccer fans over there in there soccer thread.
Between OSU basketball, OSU football recuiting, and The Crew's offseason movements, I've been on a perpetual high since the holidays. I didn't know we wold be able to get away with Crew talk on this board, but I do believe the recent developments are worthy of at least one OT post. I'd like to jump in here. Based on what I am reading, the Crew is not getting NEARLY enough buzz regarding the recent developments. I think largely because soccer knowledge is still evloving in this country - abeit very, very quickly.
IMHO, the changes The Crew has made since last season are SPOT ON! First of all, keep in mind that that Crew had one of the best teams in MLS by the end of the season. Unfortunately, the early hole that was dug was a bit too deep to climb out of. But I know have tremendous confidence in what management is building. I would not trade Arrieta and Gruenenbaum for any other MLS players. Period. And Higuain is one of those special players that most MLS teams never get to experience - he is the real deal, magically creative, highly skilled, fast, hard nosed and tough. But he and Arrieta needed help in building offense - which often begins from the back. Our defense though was havng enough trouble stopping goals, let alone initiating quality counter attacks and supporting the front.
If there were three players I never wanted to see in a Crew uniform again (I'm sorry if this is harsh,) they were Duka, Rogers, and Mirosevic. I always felt Robbie was overated and I just don't care for his persona. I have never been so upset at a Crew player as I was with Dilly. I was shocked that someone at this level played with his head down as much as he did. Always thinking dribble and on multiple occaisions missing a wide open Higuain - and others for that matter. Milan was simply too soft. No ability to win and controld the ball. Too timid and slight.
Guess what, those guys are gone. And we insert significant quality and experiece in the back half of the field. Combine that with the speed and proven goal scoring of Oduro up front. Add in that Marshall hopefully stays healthy and regains his old form. And finally, I feel that Josh Williams was unfairly criticized. He was playing out of his formerly natural postion and needs to evolve some of his decsion making to be more conservative, but I believe he is evolving into a high quality defender. Skilled, fast, big, physical, tough.
This team is shaping up to be a very hard nosed yet skilled group. Strong character guys. Not to mention world class goal keeping - and that is NOT an overstatement.
I don't know how long it will take for this group to gell, but we have the makings of an MLS Cup team. You heard it here first. :)
