Hetuck is the (American) Indian name for Buckeye and I live in WV.
I love telling the story of the name Hetuck, to those non Buckeyes who think that a Buckeye is a worthless nut. In fact a Buckeye is a tree, the strongest tree in the world. The Indians and early settlers realized you cannot use Buckeye trees to make homes canoes etc, because even after you cut a Buckeye tree down, the Buckeye tree will continue to grow leaves etc. When Ohio was being settled the Indians came to call Col Ebenezer Sprout, the local commander Hetuck (Buckeye) each time they saw him because he was a big man for his time, standing over 6'4" and 220lbs. Because Hetuck (Buckeye) stood from strength and power. So soon after all settlers in Ohio came to be known as Buckeye's. So when any non Buckeyes what to refer to a Buckeye as a worthless nut, I tell them a Buckeye stands for strength, power and a never say die sense of fortitude.
