When Saint Clairesville (Ohio) High Top100 class-of-2014 linebacker/tight end Michael Ferns got word to call Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien on Tuesday evening, he was beyond excited.
The 6-foot-3, 238-pound Ferns got a chance to check out Happy Valley during the spring and was hoping an offer would eventually come. O’Brien came through with the good word.
“I’m real excited,” Ferns said. “That’s one of the deals I really wanted to come. I visited there after visiting Ohio State. As it stands now, I seem to favor Penn State a little more. Visiting there was great.”
Ranked as the nation’s No. 5 inside linebacker and No. 94 prospect overall, Penn State is actually recruiting the versatile Ferns as a tight end. Other programs to extend an early offer includes the likes of Ohio State, Boston College, Duke, Illinois, Maryland, Notre Dame, Stanford, Virginia, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
A two-year, two-way starter, Ferns racked up 136 tackles last fall, and on offense, he rushed 31 times for 441 yards and caught another 15 passes for 301 yards. Helping Ferns develop as a player has been former Penn State standout Lance Mehl who now lives in the Saint Clairesville area.
“He always talks highly about them,” Ferns said. “I agree with everything he says, and it’s a great place to be and I’m real excited to visit out there again. I didn’t get to take a look at everything.”
The opportunity to play offense at Penn State really has Ferns’ eye.
“Something that really stuck out to me is they have a position I seem to fit real well,” Ferns said. “They have an F tight end, and it goes in motion and does this and that. He blocks, he catches, and I think it’s something I really fit well. The staff is great. I got to talk to a bunch of them.
“It felt like home there.”
Besides Penn State, Ferns plans to visit several other schools this summer in Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Virginia, Marshall and possibly Stanford. -
