One Reason You Will & One Reason You Won't: Win The B1G

  • Let me start by saying Nebraska didn't get to have a Spring Game. That nasty storm that pushed through the Midwest this past weekend knocked that out of the plans. Nebraska still had a great weekend in terms of recruiting, but the lack of a Spring Game has me a little empty.

I saw a thread on the Blue Board, link here, for Big Ten Predictions. It was stated by the Michigan State poster Macks that our division could very well be a toss up between the Spartans, Huskers, and Wolverines this year.

Got me thinking. And wanting some football talk.

So, how about one reason each -- why you will win the Big Ten, and why you will not.

    For Nebraska:

Will: Because of Rex Burkhead. The warhorse keeps on keepin' and pulls us through a couple of tight game we wouldn't have won otherwise.

Won't: Because of our front seven. We lost Jared Crick (though he was pretty ineffective last year) and Lavonte David. There's some experience in the front seven, but I'm more scared than anything at this point.

    What do you think, Buckeyes?

ALSO -- Congrats on the Barrett commitment. Held a Nebraska offer, though I don't think any of our fans considered us in the running. Aaron Bailey was in Lincoln this past weekend and came away pretty impressed. That visit, and Barrett's commit, likely makes Bailey's recruitment a Wisc/Illini/Nebraska battle. That is, unless you're all looking to take a second quarterback this class. Regardless, congrats on that and I'm looking forward to some good discussion!

  • Nice to have you over here.

    I will play into this.

    Will:
Braxton Miller takes the next step and becomes a Heisman Trophy Candidate in Meyers Offense. The Dline which could be one of the best in the country remains stout and pressures opposing teams and pounds into the ground.

    Won't:
Braxton Miller gets hurt and we loose this dynamic play maker. The LB's and Safties don't step up and make tackles.

Will: no bowl game (unless you count the beatdown we're going to deliver on 11/24).

Won't: OL quality and depth. Early reports are positive, but also full of surprises. Are the moves due to vastly improved talent recognition, or desperation?

  • OSU will win - One word....."Talent"

Looking over the past three years of recruiting clearly demonstrates that OSU is not only the most talented team in the big ten but the deepest one with talent.

OSU will lose? - Only thing I can come up with is a lack of focus due to not having a bowl game. There won't be a game they won't be favored to win and in order to lose they will have to turn in a really crappy effert.

Last year was the perfect storm for other teams to get in theirs on OSU. Head coach gone, Lame duck coach in, staff mailing it in, true freshman QB, 5 star players suspended for more than half the season.......all that and they still went .500

The distractions are done and now the theme this year is payback. So look for your teams to get teabagged in humiliating fashion on national TV as OSU choke slams and destroys your pride and joy. This isn't a Jim Tressel team who will grind clock and run it predictably up the middle 3 times ina row to allow your program to save face. This is Urban Meyer and he is a stone cold killer who doesn't care. He will score 500 on your team if they don't stop them. Look for the talent difference to becomes more readily appearent with the assistant coaching upgrade we got over the offseason. Kid gloves are off. Gonna be some busted teeth and some hurt feelings and a lot of crying after this year. Not to mention more than a few 30+ point beatdowns.

Stock tip of the year? Buy stock in kleenex companies because there will be a lot of crying after buckeye games for opposing teams fans. I suspect suicides to jump as well.

  • Will ) We still have the great players and talent on this team that has dominated the last 10 years in the Conference. Plus we have a renewed sense of ownership and motivation that Meyer has brought back to Columbus. The Coaching Staff also is an upgrade. Plus we hate the school up north more than anything..

Won't) New Offensive system being put into place and learning and growing pains that come along with it being installed.

    Go Buckeyes!

You'll have to excuse my potential naivety, but are you expecting Miller to make significant strides in his first year under Meyer? I know you're not expecting a Heisman, but does the fan base expect leaps and bounds this year?

I only ask because, frankly, "the first year in the system" is a pretty common disclaimer for quarterbacks in new systems. Even two or three year starters are given a little leeway when there is a shift in the offense. I'm curious to know what you Buckeye fans expect.

Will - Tradition, we have a tradition of winning and that was lacking last year. Look for this tyrant to reestablish itself while dooling out dome payback for last year.
    Won't - Stupid B1G rules.

I'd say if we were looking for a second it would be either the commit to Georgia or Turbisky.

If we could win: High powered offense to finally match our shut down defense

We won't because: We can't play in the B1GCG and there's a possibility of a loss in the night game in Wisconsin (you KNOW this one will be a night game in Madison).

  • Great to have an opposing school post that is not arrogant and is just open to subjective discussion. Welcome to join us at any time. This year the Buckeyes:

WILL win the B10 based on record because of the rejuvenation of the intensity and spirit being instilled by the new regime.

WILL NOT win the B10 because they are not eligible to play in the Championship Game. Objectively I see us starting off slowly and building momentum with each game due to the installation of a new offense. I am cautiously optimistic by the end of the season we will in essence be one of the top 5 teams in the country.

Again, thank you for your post Husker buddy.

In terms of football, I love it. Great fanbases, strong teams, good coaches -- hard not to enjoy it. Hell of a transition year, especially with our schedule, but it's been fun. I will say I'm already looking forward to 2013. We drop Ohio State and Wisconsin from our schedule and pick up Illinois and Purdue. biggrin

I'm afraid I don't have the Big Ten Network, but my brother and my Dad enjoy the hell out of it. My brother, 18, watches it as much as he watches any other station.

    Same to you!

Pretty much confirmed what I have been thinking. Huskers still have it in their head that Ohio State is a big player for Bailey. I think he may want them to be, but I don't see it. I think it'll come down to us and Wisconsin. There's whispers we've got a commitment from him coming. Hope they're right.

Hah. I'm happy to hear it. You're all welcome to visit our board. We've got a fantastic group over there. You may get riled a bit from some of our posters, but they do a great job self-policing. Hardly make me work.

    Texas....

From the day they joined the Big 12, we butted heads. That and those damn Longhorns have our number. Ugh.
