Heard from a dear friend that Bill passed earlier today from cancer-Those of you who don't know him, Bill played QB for Woody 60-61-62. Worked for Liebert before retiring.
I know Bill's son and daughter in law. Outstanding family.
QB for the 1961 team that was denied participation in the Rose Bowl by a faculty vote.
They were voted national champs by one of the polls.
Gary Moeller, was a co-captain of this team. (Yes, that Moeller, future scUM head coach, making him the biggest traitor in OSU history. Imagine Krenzel, Kern or even Fickell doing that?! Unthinkable!).
They were 8-0-1
I remember Bill very well. I was in his class at OSU.. and marched down to the Capitol the night that the BOD rejected the Rose Bowl invitation. Imagine some 15,000(?) students marching down High Street with polcie cooperation!
I also remember Moeller very well. He lived on the 3rd floor of Smith Hall with Lashuka, and Sanders(I think). Gary was a good guy ... an animal on the field and lovable clown off it. He 's not rejected (by OSU fans) becaused he wound up at scUM, no more than Bo is. He made the most of a good opportunity, more than likely with Woody's explicit help to get the job.
RIP Bill Mrukowski. Say hello to Woody in Buckeye heaven!
Sorry to hear of this loss. Everything I can remember reading about Bill was all positive. Does anyone know if Bill was a high school coach for a while after college. For some reason I am thinking he coached a few years.
Bill was one of the 3 QB's Woody used in the early 60's. Him and John Mummy had been good runners and high school All-Ohio Fullback. When a pass was needed, Woody brought in Joe Sparma, who had a rocket for an arm and later became a major League pitcher. I remember Bill as a great ball handler and efficent runner. that 1961 team had some tough runners wiht All American Bob Ferguson and Paul Warfield too.
