Penn State Offense

  • Watched Penn States spring game. I know it was just a spring game but damn their offense is light years behind us.

  • they have no QB, a new O-line, and a new coach. Man, it is going to be ugly and painful watching them play next yr. I was looking at their schedule, you could make a case for them losing a lot of games.

  • I think by far the worst spring game was TTUN. It looked like Yale vs. Harvard.
    No form tackling. Theyre 3rd stringer looked like Thomas Tyner compared to their D.

    I watched both, thought the PSU game was significantly worse. Looked really unorganized and i would have been alarmed if i was a PSU fan during hte Kijana Carter segment when he was stnading by "bob" asking him what plays they were running.

    I believe the New England offense is actually fairly simple schematically, but it requires the QB and the WR to make the exact same reads of the defense pre-snap and during the actual play. That is why the Patriots get better value out of veteran receivers over maybe physically superior younger players, it takes a ton of experience and a high football IQ to be successful in their scheme.

    I'm not sure how that will translate to the college level where it'll be rare for players to have that much experience in the game and especially rare that there will be enough experience between the QB and the receivers to consistently be on the same page. If you take this piece out of the offense, then it's fairly predictable. It will be interesting to see if BOB can be innovative enough to come up with a version college players can execute.

    Maybe. Here is a question for all of us while we are still sober: Perhaps we are taking a wee bit too much from controlled scrimmages?
    Miller was rushed on a number of occasions in the pocket last Saturday...with limited stunting or blitz packages from the D. Guiton did look good...despite a tendency to stare a hole right through his receivers.

    Ya think the fanatics in Ann Arbor or Happy Valley aren't laughing at that?

    Both of those teams....beat us last year. We are coming off of one of the worst years in OSU football history....albeit with an exciting future to say the least.

    That said...may I suggest we talk some s**t.......when we can do so from higher ground?

  • Yeah, they are looking at a losing season. I live over here on the far east side fo Pittsburgh...about 2hr from unhappy valley and I think most PSU fans are not sure what to expect. I can tell them what to expect...losing season!

    In no way do I compare them to our situation. What they have is an entirely new level. This is a 5 yr deal. They started well with some recruits amazingly, but they have now bottomed out and have no momentum and in fact as things progress, expect that a few of those 4 star kids will never sign with them in actuality. If I were Urban, I would stay in contact with Brenneman the top TE in the country.

    They have nothing at QB and will be weak on D also. They are a mess! I have to say also, they have the most delusional fan base in the country! Someone I know says they are ticked that Paterno's name was taken off the B10 title trophy. I understand what they are saying, but is it fair to the other 11 schools to have to accept a trophy with his name on it? Joe is not a bad guy, he made a terrible mistake by not elevating the situation, but generationally, thats how that group dealt with things. Not making an excuse! The other thing is they had the PSU brand that says they are head and shoulders above other schools from an integrity and ethics standpoint...they were trying to keep that brand!
