Phil Steele tidbit...

  • ...for the myriad of SEC and ESPN fans (tongue firmly in cheek) on this board. I was watching College Football Daily earlier and Phil Steele was a guest. The distinguished Mr. Steele informed the show that the mighty SEC had the 5th best out of conference record this year. The Big 12 was #1. How can that be? I've heard it professed on the Disney Network that the SEC is forced to schedule soft out of conference because of the gauntlet they face week in and week out. Damn you Phil Steele...letting facts get in the way of a good story! Gotta love Phil...about objective as it gets.

Was it the fifth best out of conference record, or the fifth best out of conference schedule?

We are both atheists. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours

  • Here here, I mean this is amazing since I thought the big ten was ranked 20th... Those idiots don't know what they're talking about. Id rather listen to a guy like Steele who knows what's up.

Vanderbilt, Arkansas, UK, Auburn are all very bad this year. Tennessee and Missouri ain't great either. This is becoming a top-heavy conference and the gap will widen.

The B1G had a horrible showing against the Pac 12 but overall the conference was bouyed by the unexpectedly decent non-conf play of teams not normally competing for BCS births: Minny, NW, Indiana, and PU.

Pretty sure it was record, but it may have factored in quality of conference wins and losses across the board. I tried to find it on his website. There was an article linked there that was an ESPN Insider article that I think would answer that question. I don't have access. Good question. Maybe someone else can add some insight on this.

The bottom teams in their league dropped the ball out of conference this year. There were a couple blowouts against tough teams that they weren't going to beat anyway (Ole Miss-Texas, Ky-Louisville), a couple close losses that aren't bad (Auburn-Clemson, Vandy-NW), one that I can't decide if it's bad or not (Ark-Rutgers) and then a couple that were embarrassing (Ky losing to Western Ky, Arkansas losing to Rutgers). Their OOC record is still kind of TBD though as Florida still has FSU, South Carolina still has Clemson, Georgia still has GaTech, and this week Texas A&M is at #23 La Tech.

Good assessment! It seems as though they are a bit more top heavy this year. Don't forget about the University of Louisiana-Monroe games with Arkansas and Auburn...only one loss out of those two, but equally embarrassing.

i've been saying it... the SEC isn't Dominant any more. They may have the best TEAM but not only is their out of conference record not that great, it is also pretty soft. That is why I can't stand pre season polls. They are all based on perception and not reality. I really wish the BCS poll was based totally on computer points. Far too much weight given to human opinions which, we all know, can be very biased.

  • I am a stalwart Buckeyes and B1G fan, but you guys are delusional. The depth of the SEC is nonpareil. Not only have they won the last six national championships, four different teams have held the trophy! South Carolina has a realistic shot at making that five. Honestly, that is incredible. Two B1G teams have won three in the last 44 years. Because Vanderbilt or Mississippi are not playing up to snuff, you think the conference is not deep? Ohio State would be a middling SEC team this year. Maybe the fourth or fifth best team.

  • "Bad" losses or near misses are only on the espn ticker when its the B10. Id LOVE to hear Mark May if Towson came into Ohio Stadium and kept things fairly close as they did at LSU. How many refences would there be if Akron led Ohio St through 3 quarters like it did Tennessee? The SEC myth is out of control. Bama is fantastic, possibly SCar but after that they are not the best league in the nation top to bottom.

I recognize that. The BIG has never had that many NC contenders, let alone winners. The bottom line is that those past accomplishments have nothing to do with this year. Arkansas, Auburn and LSU are not up to par, period. Their league gets a pass because of past accomplishments...understandable. Every league and every team has its warts. Alabama's schedule is no more difficult than ours...and nobody we face scares me. Seriously, look at their schedule. The only edge they'll have will be in the post-season. If (as a whole) they were as dominant as widely accepted, they would walk through their OOC schedule. They haven't. Is the BIG on the level of the SEC? No one believes that. Watch the games...they aren't world beaters either. It's a top heavy league this year.

I think the issue is that the SEC is getting the benefit of the doubt - their 1 loss teams get the nod over other conferences 1 or 0 loss teams. Taken to the extreme last season where their champ didn't even have to get tested against another conference's top team, they just got a rematch against their own conference. What the OP shared indicates that maybe their conference schedule isn't really tougher than some of the others.

I'm not trying to argue that their best team isn't the best team, just suggesting they should have to prove it on the field vs. another conference's best team.
