Rb Position Next Year

  • What will the depth chart look like? Will Dunn or Ball get to play alot or even start?
    I think:
    1: Hyde
    2: Dunn?
    3. Hall?
    4: Ball?
What do you Guys think Urban will do?

  • Hyde, assuming he seizes the opportunity, will be the #1 back....but he will need to earn it.

After that it is up in the air. Hall should be used sparingly at RB which leaves the #2 up for grabs between Smith, Dunn, Ball......

However, someone is going to get left out in the cold.

  • I think Meyer will still use the spread..I also think Meyer will pound the ball more than expected in 2012 until Meyer finds the speed to affect and exploit the defense..In Meyer's offensive scheme speed is essential..

  • I've never been impressed with Hyde. Not excited about him in that offense.

  • I don't see Hall in the backfield much at all. So, IMO he is out of this conversation. I see him as the WR/RB combo that Urbs uses next year only.

So, that being said, I see Smith on top. I am a little iffy about Hyde. If he buys in, he wins it. Part of me wonders if he sticks it out. If he is not getting the PT he wants, the investment he is about to make may not be worth the reward. Consiering his twitter history.

I think Ball is the first freshman off the bench. I see him working really hard to earn the PT. I see Dunn getting some reps, and not redshirting.

  • I DO NOT see Hyde getting time in Urbans offense. Hyde doesnt look elusive in big games. People are drinking WAY too much Hyde juice imo

  • Hard to tell. All new offensive staff and totally different play book. Whoever can figure out the playbook and make the most of practice time gets the nod. I can't remember Meyer's previous RB, but a smaller, quick back seems to be the offenses still, so who knows

  • This is an interesting question but one that it is way too early to predict. I am not sure that this question will be easily answered after Spring Ball however by then perhaps some will have shown they can take the heat and keep coming. I think Hall sees quite a few reps as to me he seems the best fitted for Urban's offense and certainly the most experienced. I think the wild card in all of this will be Rod Smith. If he rights himself in Urban's mind, can stay academically eligible and works hard he could be nearer the top than would appear right now. I still believe he has the potential of elite talent. Hyde, if he desplays a good attitude should be our power back. As for Dunn and Ball I think our preference would be to red shirt both unless we run into injury problems.

  • The new OC/QB coach has stated that people should not pigeon hole them into solely a spread offense.....

they have the opportunity to do a little of both and as he continues to recruit the players he wants then we will see what the offense really turns out to be.

I disagree with people not seeing Hyde in this offense.....he DOES have very good speed.....enough speed to be succesful in this offense if used appropriately.

I liked what I saw out of Smith when he was in (minus the fumbles, which can be fixed.) I would like to see him get some more of the workload this year.

i agree with this. I never saw him make a run out of something that wasn't already a gaping hole and didn't see any field vision from him. He's a straight north and south guy. He has a nice size/speed ratio, but lacks the feet i want in a back. No lateral agility. Not sure how that will translate to Urban's system.

Seems like we have this trend with backs who show promise early and are hailed as the next stud, then we find out later that they either A. never got any better, or B. never were that great to begin with. i think i could see him being next in that line.

  • Straight line speed, but not great vision. Not shifty, no wiggle, and for 240 he doesn't finish runs well.

  • I think Corey Brown will get some carries at RB, Urban loves to put his fastest players in the backfield and it would be perfect since Brown will not actually have to catch the ball

  • It seems like the board is all over the place in terms of who will be the featured back. Should be a good competition and I look forward to the best guy winning it out. All we can do at this point is speculate. No one outside of the coaching staff can say with any conviction that they know who is going to be the guy.

Hall will be the starter next year. We need to stop kidding ourselves. He was suspended this year and Hyde and Smith still couldn't beat him out. That will not change next year. The coaching staff loves him and he clearly has the best hands on the team out of the running backs. We did the same thing last year with Boom. We discussed every back but Boom as the starter and Boom was always pencilled by the coaching staff as the clear cut starter. At minimum Hall will be 1b since he will also be our primary punt returner and kick returner. Smith is a fumbler. Until he proves differently he will not start. Hyde is good but not great but in general Hall and Hyde will be our top two backs next year. All the other backs or fighting for their leftovers.
