Saban, then and now

  • Not sure on the answer of this, but; how long was Saban MSUs head coach? If he is such a great coach, why didnt he win it all at MSU? It's a loaded question, we all know the answer......over signing. Practiced in SEC, frowned upon in B10. Just a thought.

  • Oversigning helps, but actually it's because Alabama,Louisiana and surrounding states have many more top notch high school football players than Michigan and the surrounding states do. Oversigning helps. I believe that.

However, let's be fairer to Nick Saban. Bill Belichick wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire during his stint in Cleveland. Now he's considered one of the best coaches in history. I know he has Tom Brady but give the guy credit, he learned from his mistakes and improved. I think Saban did as well. However, he is greatly helped by the fact that he is allowed many more mulligans than other coaches in the country outside of the SEC.

  • No that's not it at all.

He was only there for 5 seasons, and got them from 6-6 in his first season to 9-2 in 1999. When Saban arrived at MSU, they hadn't had a winning season since 1990.

Alabama already had a ton of talent before he got there.

    Weak Sauce.

I think Saban was 6-6 his first year at Alabama. Then he got his recruiting mojo working. Jimmys and the Joes make the Xs and Os look better.

  • Plus, it's a hell of a lot easier to get kids to come to Alabama then East Lansing.

  • Although getting more successful in the Big10 at the time, MSU was always going to be behind OSU, MIchigan, and Pen State in regards to pecking order. Hell, they were number 2 in their own state.

He migrated to a program that was on the upswing and was number 1 in the state (even over the Saints at the time).

A portion of their fall out are academic which a actually helps them to continue to over sign. How many of you know than Saban was fired by Earl Bruce because OSU couldn't play pass defense with Saban? It seems John Elway had a hand in Saban's firing. Tressel came to OSU as an assistant the year after Saban left.
Saban honed his defensive coaching skills under Belichek with the Cleveland Browns. One rumor circulating during Cooper struggling years was Saban was a candidate to become OSU head coach during Saban's Cleveland Brown years. Saban became the coach at Michigan State and the rest is history

  • It's all about recruiting. No coach can win the national championship with inferior talent. If you can pick your best 85 out of 120 kids, you have a huge advantage. Any coach in division 1 could take Bamas' best 85 out of 120 and win a lot of games. All that said, Saban is doing what it takes to win. The NCAA says its ok. The NCAA says boosters can now pay the parents of recruits as long as the recruit says he doesn't know about it. Are we doing what it takes to win? The state of Alabama is.

Yeah, especially since at Alabama they don't need to know how to read.

Weak argument for Saban winning tied to oversigning. When he went to MSU, they were nothing. His last year, they went 10-2 beating Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and Florida with Spurrier in a bowl.
LSU offered more than twice the money and the rich recruiting grounds of Louisiana and Texas right now door. LSU was a mess from DiNardo, Saban turned them into a national power again, won a national titles and LSU has been elite ever since he left.
    Same with Bama now.
Saban is the best in the business right now, Meyer has a chance to catch him for sure.

  • Winning at msu is much different from winning at bama or lsu. Why didn't Mack brown win it all at unc when he could at Texas? It's obvious.

  • When you coach in a conference where your Heisman candidate RB can be spotted on camera driving a loaded luxury current year Yukon Denali......and almost every relevant media outlet will turn a blind eye to it..........its pretty easy to be successful.......he!! who knows what else goes on!
