Stock Report: Big Ten Coaches

  • dantonio completely laid an egg this year and his reinforcements are coming in the form of a recruiting class that 247 ranks behind kansas and just one spot above indiana. i probably would have put him in the 'stock down' category, but suit yourself. good writeup.

  • Fickell had a better chance of winning Big Ten COY last year than either Tressel or Myer in their OSU careers.

    I hear you, but I think after back-to-back double-digit win seasons (not easy to do at MSU) Dantonio gets the benefit of the doubt for now. I guess I never really bought into him being anything more than an above-average head coach, so his stock was never that high in my mind to begin with. I think if MSU has two straight mediocre seasons, Dino's stock will definitely be down. But I think it's fair to say his stock his holding steady for now. He's a decent coach, nothing more. But he's a good fit at MSU.

    i suppose if your perspective is that he is above-average at best (and we have clearly seen that msu's ceiling as a program seems to be the capital one bowl even in the best of times) that makes sense. i also suppose that part of my thinking is that i see him/msu going down more next year than you do, so i would have dinged him for my prediction on top of his recent slippage.

  • There's no way you can put Dantonio in the "Holding Steady" camp. A 6-6 record was not expected despite "losing so many starters." This team was ranked in the top 10 at one time so expectations were high and he failed to deliver. Lastly, he was so desperate and unethical that he sent a player who just received a wicked concussion back into the game several plays later. He's not even a penny stock.

  • Didn't Dantonio just beat an SEC team last year on New Year's Day? Georgia right? The team that took Bama to the brink to head to the MNC a couple weeks ago? I think that in itself makes a pretty bold statement as to what kind of coach he is. What's missing here with some of the coaches is what kind of people they are. Boeckman is a good person. Kill seems like a good person. While being a good person doesn't translate directly to wins, I think it does factor into why they were hired in the 1st place. Despite how important it is to win...how you treat people and what kind of person you are DOES still matter to some degree. At least I hope it does.

  • I agreed with most of these however I disagree about the indiana coach because he's shown flashes of turning it around and if he could get a little better at defense, I truly think they'd turn into an right win team under him.

    If he could do that bigtime programs would be pounding at his door.

  • Dantonio is right where he belongs in Biddle's rankings. He's not elite but he also doesn't suck.

    I get Dantonio holding steady and Beckman trending down. And I like the assessments of Fitzgerald and Pelini. However, your article vacillates between "how do these coaches compare to Meyer and/or previous coaches at their school (especially to those with OSU ties)?" and "are these good coaches?". Kill for example who may never be a great coach is at the least "steady" in Minnesota. And given what he has to work with, Wilson can't be anything but "up". Who cares what the defense is doing? That we're even talking about Indiana offense is nothing short of amazing.

    It's time to get over the "Tressel didn't win Big Ten COY" at 14-0. Christ that was 10 years ago; need you bring it up again? And stop with "12-0 earns Meyer COY". I hate PSU and the way they handled the Sandusky situation. But what O'Brien's done to date is outstanding. Tip of the cap to him.

    Anderson and Hazell may be good hires but "Steady" is inappropriate. "N/A" is more like it. And Rutgers and Maryland needed to be included.

    In short, a worthy endeavor. But you need to decide: "am I to write an objective article or an opinion piece?"

    I agree. I think he needs to go out and find a bright mind to run his Offense. He has the defense in place.

  • "Are you crazy or just plain stupid?" - one of my favorite quotes from Forrest Gump...you must be Fickle's relative or something...that guy was a deer caught in headlights all last year. He didn't deserve the DC job this year and I thought he wouldn't be brought back in 2013 after the way our vaunted defense underperformed all year. I was hoping to see Luke grab a job in the MAC but not even a MAC school sees value in him as a HC right now.

    Meyer should have been COY hands down. What O'Brien at Penn St. was remarkable. I think this award is all about expectations...At the beginning of the season it wasn't crazy to think the Bucks would go 12-0 - I thought they would do that easier than they did...but I didn't think Penn State would win 2 games. Therefore the reason for why he got it & Meyer didn't.

  • I loved Mark Dantonio as our DC; I do not think we would have won a NC w/o him. Just as I don't think we would have won a NC in '68 w/o Lou Hokltz as our DC who shut down OJ except for that one cut back run for USC's only score.

    You need to analyze Penn State's roster a little deeper. Penn State was 9-4 in 2011 and was 8-4 this season. Penn State had the best passing QB in the Big Ten in McGloin, and one of the best defenses led by a pair of seniors in DT Jordan Hill and LB Mike Mauti. I know the sheepherders have tried to tell everyone that Penn State had a decimated roster in 2012, but that was not factual in the least. Penn State's drastic decline won't begin in earnest until 2013. It's amazing that people didn't actually look at the team Penn State fielded this year. It's as if people, like the person I'm quoting, couldn't look past the scandal to see the players on the field. Some good players. Players that had an even better record the previous season.

    Therefore my friend, I must say, your post is very disappointing. You need to decide whether you are going to post well, or post weak material like this. ;-)

  • Stock down on Brady Hoke is wishful thinking. They have 4 losses, 3 of which are against top 5 teams, and in the other their starting QB was injured. They are on target to bring in a 2nd top 10 recruiting class and have found their QB for the next 2 years.
