Sullinger, Thomas? Wait and See

We look at the NBA draft decisions facing OSU sophomores Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas after the Buckeyes dropped their national semifinal game to Kansas.

    I second that.

  • Sully needs to go the Kevin Love route and almost reinvent himself to some degree. Drop the bad weight, hone the outside jumper and develop some perimeter skills, and work his azz off on the defensive end positioning for rebounds. Has pretty good foot work already but could certainly stand to learn some more post moves. DT has to salivating at the opportunity to be a 20+ ppg scorer next year so I hope that entices him to come back one more year. It's a pretty loaded draft as it is with many big dogs electing to stay in school last June due to the impending lockout.

  • My advice to Sullinger would be to jump to the NBA and move on with his professional career after having been a model student athlete here. All one has to do is look at Greg Oden to see how precarious a professional sports career can be when injuries enter into the equation.

As for DT, I'm hoping he returns with the goal of becoming a team leader and working his way up the 2013 draft board to a high round 1 pick. It'd be interesting to know what kind of insight guys like Diebler, Lighty and even Scoonie Penn could provide about playing overseas.

  • Stay the course Bucks ! Matta put us back on the map in hoops. In the mix every year. This year we got to the Final Four after graduating 3 starters. I am down a bit but Matta has done a good job.

  • Would like him to increase his rotation. Would have liked Amir Williams and Witherspoon to see more time. I could not even tell you what Ross is capable of either. We'll be strong next year !!

  • I think we saw last night what Sullinger could be up against in the NBA. He struggles with taller defenders and getting consistent shots off in the paint against them. He really needs to stay one more year to polish his game and if he does, he will be a top 3 pick in next years draft and earn a few more mill in the process. I do not think he has all the tools for the NBA...yet. Hard to turn down the money though.

  • Sullinger staying this year cost him approximately $10 million dollars. He was a top 3-5 pick in the draft this year and in a loaded draft this year will probably go 8-15. He will be a solid pro but I am not sure what staying another year will accomplish for him. He needs to go. Thomas is the player that staying could benefit him in the draft. He will put up huge numbers next year and could work himself into the first round.

  • Don't forget the Kenyon Martin example. Guy was clearly ready for a spot on an NBA bench at about a mill/yr., after his third year, but he came back to UC, became player of the year, and got them a high seed in the NCAA. Yes, he broke his leg in the first game, but his NBA contract went from $1M/yr. to $20M over 3 or 4 years because of that last year in college, building his "brand" and press coverage, etc.

So there is a quantum leap in value to coming back and having a great year. I think that is especially true of DT if he improves his D, 3 pt. shooting, plus bulks up. But that's a tough sell compared to cash now. It is a calculated risk.

But they also need to do the hard math. One million dollars does not mean one million dollars. Agent: 10%-25% off the top, depending; Taxes: 40% off the top (35% federal, assume 5% state but could be another 10%-11% in NY and CA.). So between the two you'll see 45% of what you sign for. And the real question is how much is GUARANTEED.

Or, you can get millions of dollars guaranteed by playing in the NBA, and 15 years from now come back to OSU and get your degree. College will always be an option. Playing in the NBA is not always an option. The average NBA career is only a few years. Probably less than 4 years. How could Sully not go pro?

Do you really want to be 15 years older than everyone. That's kind of gross if you think about a 35 year old man hanging out at the bars. this is his time to be a college student and thoroughly enjoy the experience. The money and NBA will be there in a year. You can't come back and be in college again if you're 35. You can only "attend class".

Imagine the life he can live as a multi-millionaire. How many people on this very site, if it was a TRUE OPTION, would pass up millions for an Ohio State win just last night? No one would. Anyone who says otherwise is lying. You would take the money and say that there is always next year. So people need to quit expecting these kids to pass up that kind of money, not one, but 2 years in a row.

You aren't passing it up. You're accepting it one year later.

  • Lets be honest here fellas. Sullinger is gone. He was questioning himself during this season about not leaving last year. As far as Thomas, I dont know. I would leave if I was him but I guess it depends how far down the draft board does he really go. I just have this gut feeling there is a chance that Thomas comes back. He is a great shooter but his body of work still needs improvement. He could learn it in college or the NBA. Who knows. Good luck to both of them.

  • More to life than money

He can goto school, enjoy his experience, get a degree and still goto the NBA - if not, he hopefully is pursing a degree in something he enjoys doing for the rest of his life. :)

The real question is - does Jared Sullinger *want* to be a professional basketball player? He didn't want to be one last year, does he want to be one this year?

It's a different lifestyle, on the road all the time, etc... I'd like to hear how Evan Turner is enjoying his career right now, or how Mike Conley Jrs early years in the NBA have been, etc. Sure,we can discuss Oden, but he is, IMO the exception. As mentioned Kenyon Martin broke a leg and returned - look at Hummel, etc..

It's all speculation, I'm sure it's tough for him, but he is a leader and has shown great character so far. I do think he needs to learn how to handle criticism, he seemed to be talking back to the press in a way that surprises me.
