Yes, he could've hurt his knee his sophomore season (medical RS), redshirted his junior season (actually TAKING TIME to come back), not rushing a recovery that certainly the people who paid him millions were rushing him to make, and playing himself back into shape so that he could have a long NBA career.
Just imagine...
Not saying this is what would've happened but everyone likes to point to this injury thing as a certainty. It's easier to recover at school where there isn't the kind of monetary pressure to recover that there is on the professional level where big money has been invested. If you don't think players come back too early all the time, you're crazy.

More to life than money
He can goto school, enjoy his experience, get a degree and still goto the NBA - if not, he hopefully is pursing a degree in something he enjoys doing for the rest of his life. :)
The real question is - does Jared Sullinger *want* to be a professional basketball player? He didn't want to be one last year, does he want to be one this year?
It's a different lifestyle, on the road all the time, etc... I'd like to hear how Evan Turner is enjoying his career right now, or how Mike Conley Jrs early years in the NBA have been, etc. Sure,we can discuss Oden, but he is, IMO the exception. As mentioned Kenyon Martin broke a leg and returned - look at Hummel, etc..
It's all speculation, I'm sure it's tough for him, but he is a leader and has shown great character so far. I do think he needs to learn how to handle criticism, he seemed to be talking back to the press in a way that surprises me.

If Sully & Thomas come back both of them will get alot better for 1"for 2 they will be playing a better posistion and there stock will rise fir 3 they will have the bench so they wont have to play 37 min a game. So when they are out there they are fresh they can have the best of both worlds when its done..... If you get a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT THEE OHIO STATE LOL THEY WILL ALL BE SET FOR LIFE! !! The players and coaches ... Then go in the draft wow!!!

If one goes, both will go. The dream of an NCAA championship is illusive, and it is a grind. They are worn out at this point and looking for change. Sullinger around 9th or 10th, Thomas and Buford late first, or early second round, IMO. My prediction - Buford will be the best pro of the three because he is the most athletic and will be encouraged (forced) to widen his game (see Redd, Turner).
I believe Scott is gone no matter what happens. He is not going to play ahead of Craft, and the only other option is to beat out Smith, who is 3 inches taller and a better defender. He would be a senior by the time he starts - Charlie won't allow that.
