Are we about to see the Southeastern Conference's run of college football dominance come to an end? The People's Champ thinks so and tells you why ...

  • When was Kiffin an elite SEC coach?

  • Great research and supporting of some hard to ignore facts about recent changes to the CFB landscape. Certainly will be interesting to see but I'll be more inclined to believe it all when the SEC isn't holding the crystal ball come January. Until then we're all just reaching and hoping.

  • Enlightening and entertaining at the same time and no one does it better than Bax. Thanks for your insights and for verbalizing what many have thought and opinined through the years. Hopefully, it is just a matter of time before the SEC has to play on an even playing field or at least a neutral one. Go Bucks!!

No one is saying he was. I think what Bax was trying to say is that the SEC grabbed one of the young hot assistants and paid him well. Which other conferences weren't willing to do. And Kiffin was going to be a stud at Tennessee, like it or not.

  • Glad you pointed out talent and coaching that can optimize that talent is the reason the $EC has been dominant. I hate when us non-$EC fans whine about the other "factors" when they hand us our asses. Can't wait for the Urbanator to put them in their place. I've eaten alot of crow that my SEC buds served since 2006. Can't wait to return the favor!

"Two former top SEC coaches (Meyer, Kiffin) are now in charge of two of the country’s stud programs in other leagues."

Ok not elite but "top" SEC coach which with recent history if your a top SEC coach you're probably elite.

Not to be argumentative I just didn't agree with that statement. IMO the biggest factor in the potential swing in dominance is not being able to over-sign. While Im sure the Saban's of the world will find a loop hole somewhere it will not be as rampant.
Also teams are beginning to offer the "four year" schollie which should cut done on these teams "cutting" players.
Finally I just can't imagine a world where students will not acknowledge how Saban so callously pulls schollies from recruits.

Id like to think this type of behavior will eventually haunt him but maybe Im naive.

  • I hope Bax is right. Alabama, LSU and Florida will still recruit with the best in the nation, but the mismatch feeling we had in NC games against Florida and LSU is fast becoming a thing of the past.

If this is the biggest reason they're winning it all every year then every conference should implement it. A whole lot of conference commisioners are missing the boat! I don't buy it, I just think they get better talent and coaching top to bottom. I know Meyer will change that in the B1G but not sure about anybody else in this conference just yet.

  • While I agree with your list of advantages the SEC has enjoyed over the years, I was surprised that the new academic policy going in 2016 wasn't included in your fulcrum. I know it's a few years away yet, but it's certainly going to even things out further in a couple short years.

  • Good analysis but there is one very important factor that wasn't covered. The $E$ demographical advantage with elite Defensive line talent ie: 6'5 320 running 4'9 40's. Granted we are one of the exceptions to the rule based on the last two recruiting cycles but the rest of the country can't say the same. Those type of kids "generally speaking" don't venture very far from mamas home cooking.

  • I believe it has more to do with oversigning and talent level more than anything else for the SEC as a whole. NIck Saban was awful at mich st now he is the greatest coach ever?? I do think the rest of the country is closing the gap and now that the SEC cant oversign as many players that will help.

  • Bax - I hope you're right about the SEC's run ending soon.

However, I have my doubts, at least until multiple teams in other conferences begin to recruit as well as SEC schools.

Per Rivals recruiting rankings: On average for the past 3 years (2010 - 2012), 8 SEC schools have appeared in the top 20 recruiting classes each year. That equates to SEC schools making up 40% of the top 20 list on a yearly basis.

  • Great post... As other conferences "fight back... and build strong coaching staffs... recruits are going to play. The geographic shift has an impact, but if they can play for an elite coach in a northern state... they will consider it ...

If they want to go to the NFL they have to get used to colder environments... Not just playing in the sunny south.

    buckeyefan3

  • When all conferences play by the same rules, the SEC will go back to normal. The oversigning rules they finally implemented should make a dent in a couple years. That is when I think the other conferences will be "better".

What part aren't you buying, the oversigning...the one year schollies that allow a coach to simply not renew it...or the part about Saban pulling a schollie at the last second?

  • We'll see how well they travel to Detroit, Indy, NY...for National Title games. LSU never has won a National Championship outside of their own state...which is amazing. Imagine OSU winning 3 NC and/or championship clinching Bowl games in Dayton, Cinci or Cleve....SEC fans would be screaming for huge asterisks in the record books. Not to mention all those years of playing in the Rose Bowl with a chance to win the NC. It's the elephant in the room and it is insane. Look forward to the change.

  • I don't buy it's the reason they're winning NC's, I'm sorry. The fact that they "oversign" is not gonna stop the top recruits in the country from going to the SEC and if it was against the rules they would have vacated a whole lot of hardware by now. The fact of the matter is whether rules against it are put in place or not, that won't stop them from getting the top recruits in the country nor make those recruits wanna automatically pledge their allegiance to the B1G or any other conference out there. If anything, they're just gonna get even higher level recruits because they'll no longer have the luxury of oversigning. After Bama waxes Michigan's ass in September like PSU last September I will not be saying to myself, "well that never woulda happened if Bama hadn't oversigned." Instead it'll be something like, "Bama had 10 times better players and an NFL head coach and D coordinator pacing the sidelines." Kinda falls in line with the four 1st round picks they had in the draft this year. Which was as many as the B1G had by the way.
