The Next Two Schools Added Two The BIG Conference

  • It appears that bordering the current BIG footprint was a major factor on selecting Rutgers and Maryland for expansion. It is also very important that both schools that were just added are members of the Association of American Universities (link below). I think it is safe to say any further expansion of the BIG will include these two items as criteria for an invitation. If that is the case, the list narrows pretty quickly.

Below is a list of the 14 current BCS programs that fit the criteria of bordering or within the current BIG footprint:
    Virginia
    Virginia Tech
    Iowa State
    Kansas
    Kansas State
    West Virginia
    Cincinnati
    Louisville
    Pittsburgh
    Temple
    Notre Dame
    Colorado
    Kentucky
    Missouri

Of the schools listed above, the following 6 are also members of the AAU:
    Virginia
    Iowa State
    Kansas
    Pittsburgh
    Colorado
    Missouri

If we add another two schools, I think it comes from these 6. Colorado is stretching that footprint argument and the just joined the PAC12, so I think they are unlikely to join. Missouri fits perfectly with the footprint, but just joined the SEC. It’s hard to imagine them joining as well. That leaves Virginia (ACC), Iowa State (B12), Kansas (B12), and Pittsburgh (ACC). If it is left to those four, who do you want?

I think my personal preference would be Pitt and Virginia.

  • UVA and then UNC. UNC will be contiguous once UVA comes on board. They are both flagship teams from the most populous states left as options.

  • Throw in North Carolina with Virginia, and I am buying.
Georgia Tech on the outside lane.
I hope Notre Dame gets left in the cold.

  • And they both get a ton of funding being AAU members...

Good call Jar. I didn't see that angle. Drop Pitt from mine and add UNC Chapel Hill.

All this is making AD's and coaches everywhere really nervous. Greedy Domers out in the cold servs them right.

If FSU and Clemson were to bolt the ACC for the Big 12 like they wanted, and Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina would join the Big Ten, the ACC would be adding Big East teams fleeing the Big East.
The ACC would become worse, real fast.
Also rumblings Va Tech and NC State head to the SEC, the RIP Big East teams hop to the ACC, and we have a new worse ACC that I hope Notre Dame is stuck in.

I think this is the likely path to 16

It also would be 3 teams taken from the ACC. That would be sort of an implied, but unspoken "You do something we don't like (accept ND when we wanted them) and we'll gut you with a dull spoon." lol

If they go after UVA, they could also go after Vanderbilt or Tennessee, since VA shares a border with TN.

I could see the B1G going after Kansas and UVA, 1 team to each division's defacto region.

That being said, I would LOVE to see Army and Navy added, merely for the prestige that it would bring to the conference. Both are contiguous possibilities with the addition of Maryland. I know this is about as likely to happen as Notre Dame joining the B1G, but hey...it IS a possibility.

If maintaining a contiguous footprint is eliminated as a consideration, then I could see the B1G making a hard play for GA Tech. Or possibly adding Kansas and Duke with an eye to beefing up Basketball.

...as a bit of an after thought, would it be a massive slap in the face if the B1G snatched-up UCONN? How's about a BTN invasion of ESPN's home state?

Everyone talking football, but North Carolina, Maryland and even Virginia, Big Ten is a basketball elite conference.

  • What would adding a non-AAU school truly mean? Do schools is the B1G getting any extra money because we are all members?

I'm all for academics but this is big business. Can we honestly say athletes in the 2 sports that matter are held to any different standard in this conference other than at Northwestern?

I want a combo of FSU, Clemson, Va Tech. Not likely, I know.
