  • I agree on keeping Chapman in the bullpen instead of turning him into a starter. If he were to start, batters would be able to get used to the speed of his pitches as the game wears on thus, taking away some of his effectiveness. It has to be extremely difficult at the end of the games seeing someone who can throw 100+ fastballs and then throw in a 90 mph change up as well as the breaking pitch he throws. I believe that the less other teams see him, the better he'll be for the Reds.

I think I'm in the minority on this from the people I've talked to, but I disagree on Chapman being a starter.

A guy that throws that hard only has a set number of pitches in that arm. Would it be nice to have a guy that throws that hard giving 200+ innings per year? Absolutely. But I don't see him lasting more than two or three years before he goes down pitching that much.

Now, let him throw out of the bullpen and you have a guy that could be the best closer in the game for a decade.

I do like how he looks like he's throwing effortlessly out there. Hopefully that is putting less stress on the arm than for a guy like Dibble, but it's still incredible velocity that will result in injury some day.

Tell that to Randy Johnson. Like you said, he's got a smooth delivery--effortless--hopefully less wear and tear. He's got the fastball-slider combo but needs to do more work on the changeup. He's got this year to work on it. I just look at what's on the team and what the team needs. We need a front end SP unless Cueto or Volquez can become that--and I don't mean good; I mean great. Massett has the makings of a quality closer. Is he perfect? No, but I only need one hand to name the "great" closers in baseball. He's downright nasty most of the time.

I could also point out Nolan Ryan, but the truth is that 100+ MPH starting pitchers typically don't last long. Could he turn out to be another Johnson or Ryan, sure, but the odds are against it, whereas if he were coming out of the bullpen, he would have a much better chance to give us years of dominance. And the good point that someone else made, by about the third time through the order, people will have adjusted to his speed and if you make good contact with a 103MPH fastball, it's gone. He could also be a 2 inning closer in many instances which would be outstanding!

Besides, if he does succeed as the ace starter and is able to deliver 200+ innings and not get hurt, he'll be playing for the Yankees in a few years so I'll end up hating him.

By keeping him in the bullpen, you have a dominant closer, increase the chance that he'll have a long career, and increase the chance that the Reds can afford to pay him.

Either way, it's a good problem to have.

And Steve, glad you realized your mistake on the Skyline/Gold Star debate...

  • If the Reds win tonight, it will be their best start since 1990. Course, they started 9-0 in '90 en route to going wire-to-wire and winning the World Series title, but I'll take a nice 4-0 start. Won't be easy though. For all the Astros' woes, JA Happ is a solid pitcher and the Reds usually struggle against lefties (even in the post Griffey/Dunn era). Also, Hunter Pence always seems to hit well against Cincinnati.

Go Reds! Let's stay undefeated tonight. Mike Leake taking the hill -- would love to see him get off to a great start again. With the pitching staff banged up, the team definitely needs him to step up.

Unlike McLovin (Penn State QB) some of these Reds pitchers like Leake, Arroyo and Travis Wood have real moxie. (Not excessive moxie though, of course.)
