The sad truth about Buford

  • Probably going to take grief for this but I have felt or a long time like William Buford is the most overrated player in OSU history. He was good from day one and stayed four years, playing on very good teams, so he scored a ton of points. But in big game after big game he misfires and fails to come through when needed most. Don't get me wrong he is a good player who does many things well. But he is not a bigtime player that can carry a team. Dennis Hopson was. Jimmy Jackson was. Even Scoonie Penn. If Buford was carrying his weight this year, Sully would be an unsoppable force. But with no Diebler or Lighty, and Buford so streaky, teams pack it in around Sully and beg OSU to beat them from outside. As a senior, with his skills, Buford should find a way to carry the team even when the outside shot is off. He has the skills. But he does not deliver in the clutch. I like him, and wish him well, but he has disappointed me over and over again, and I have low expectations for the NCAA tourney.

  • He has skills, without a doubt, and he's probably to the point where he's psyched himself out long before he sets foot on the court for any big game. I think a sports psychologist would do him wonders.

  • When he is on he reminds me of Keith [Jamaal] Wilkes who was nicknamed silk because his stroke was so smooth. Unfortunately when he goes cold his stroke turns to crap and the more he misses the worse it gets.

I agree. And I doubt we make it past the first weekend. Sad...

  • I can't stand Buford's game because he plays unintelligently and selfishly. He makes up his mind before he touches the ball that he's going to get a shot up and it doesn't matter how well he is defended or who else may be open, he is putting it up.

He is a Senior who has by far the worst shot selection on the team. He is so worried about getting his that if you pay extra defensive attention to him he plays right into your hands and starts forcing it on every touch.

I wont shed a tear when he's gone. I think it's laughable that some think he's an nba talent.

  • Y'all are plum crazy. Buford is an All-American. That is, if we only played inferior teams all the time in non-key games. Although I'm certain there have been more overrated bball Buckeyes over the years, I am at a loss to think of any right now. Can someone name one instance where he came up with a clutch play in an important game? I laughed out loud watching the scUM game when Bilas not once, but TWICE, said Buford was a clutch player. I certainly agree, if by clutch you mean turning the ball over or missing a shot when the game is on the line. I really dislike bashing Buckeyes, so I'm going to stop right now.

  • He's not over rated. He just isn't that great of a player. Never has been. He has ALWAYS had problems with consistancy and shot selection. Cannot believe he is taking these awefull shots as a senior. Turn around fade away jumpers? You can't come off a screen for a good look?

I think half this team is more worried about how they look on TV to a potential scout than playing the actual game to win. You think Buford's shot selection is bad? Someone needs to tie a gorilla to Thomas and train it to whop him up side the head every time he takes some low percentage prayer with a guy in his face without having worked the ball around. He's turning into the new Kosta Kufos black hole of basketball.

  • This year is so reminiscent of Michael Redd's senior season... Buford has the skills to pay the bills but he is a mental midget. Good players don't slump all season! I was so baffled watching the scUM game. When the shot clock was running down and we needed to get a shot up, he passed it to Smith for some odd reason instead of using his "pro" game and going one on one and trying to get a decent shot up. Then on another possession he comes down and just forces the worst shot of all time against great defense with like 25 on the shot clock.

It's like he doesn't know when to be aggressive and when to pass. He is taking awful shots and missing them. Then when he is somewhat open, he misses or passes. I really thought he should have been benched Saturday night, he wasn't helping the team. This team got really hard to watch really fast. Matta doesn't trust the bench, so he leaves the starters out there who aren't producing. Then when the young bench guys get in, they are afraid to shoot half the time because they have such a short leash. When does spring ball start?

  • It certainly is a tough time for our bball team and coaches. Really high expectations to start the season, but they can't seem to get any cohesion on the floor. Seems like they are just stumbling and staggering along, able to beat lesser teams but looking inept against a quality opponent or at an away site. Years ago there was a baseball team in Cincy that had similar problems , high expectations and poor field performances. The wily old manager took a risk and put his All-star outfielder on third base, a position he had never before played, and a new young player in left field. As most all of you know that was the '75 Reds that went on to make history. The Buckeyes don't have to be one of the greatest teams of all time, but Thad has to have the guts to make a change of some sort. We have seen enough results to understand that it is not going to change unless Thad does something a little different. Thad seems really rigid in his belief and support of the status quo. I just hope he will make some change to maybe snap the team out of its current funk. It's almost spring so let's all think positive. Take a risk, Thad.

  • I don't know if I agree that he is the most overrated player in OSU history, but he has certainly underachieved this year.

I keep hearing people say he is too inconsistent. If you have 2-3 bad shooting games, then yes you are inconsistent. But if you only have 2-3 good games (like as the case this season) then maybe you are just bad, no?

I really agree with this. I hate to, but you are pretty much right.

  • He plays his best when his team doesn't really need him. And his worst when it does.

It's puzzling. He could have had such a sensational senior season and graduated as a champ. Instead, his finale has been underwhelming. His OSU career has been like his own personal March Madness -- came in like a lion, went out like a lamb.

    When in doubt, punt.

Maybe this is why craft has been so aggravated with thew team lately.

  • No one has mentioned Buford's performance vs. Kentucky last year in the tournament. Everyone else on the team played a tremendous game, especially Diebler and Lighty I think Buford's performance that game was the worst I have ever seen from any Buckeye in the past 40 years. There is no way we should have lost that game.
