The south has the best athletes?

Thanks for enlightening us to your fastball and forty time, Uncle Ricco.

    Quarter of a mile, baby!

  • I played H.S. football and baseball in Ohio and South Florida. I will not divulge my 40 time, bench press, or fastball but I will say that there is a clear difference between athletes in Florida and Ohio. Our Florida team had a ton of sub 4.5 forty athletes (not electronic) and some of them were really good but weren't highly recruited. However, the o-lines in Florida were really weak compared to Ohio. I did find it interesting that the community didn't care much about high school football or athletics in general. It's probably because most of the people were over 60 or they were transplants so there wasn't much community pride. Also, no one cared at all about basketball.

I also lived in Dallas, TX where H.S. football is huge!! Everything really is bigger in TX especially in Dallas.

I pitched in college, southpaw. I could throw in the low 90's consistently through 7+ innings. It's more so the strength of your legs, back, and stomach muscles and good conditioning. Many people believe the myth that it's the strength of your arm. It's not. Yes, arm strength is required but those other areas that I mentioned are more important. Proper mechanics pitching can increase your speed and give you excellent location. Remember the guy who could throw 100 but never could get it in the strike zone? It's because his mechanics were crap. At 6'2", I was able to dunk and my 40 was 4.5/4.6 range (non electronic lol). I honestly think all of the above took less effort then surfing. Especially dunking. I mean, you palm the ball and take it up the rim and throw it down. With that said, I was blessed to be born with these genetics but still, I believe surfing has the greatest athletes after experiencing it first hand. Prior to surfing, I never thought of it but after having lived it, I respect it greatly and will say it's the hardest sport I've ever participated in and some of the world's greatest athletes.

I agree with you that most of it you are born with. But there's also great athletes who improved with conditioning, great coaching, and eating properly. Look at Greg Maddux. The guy couldn't break 88 on the radar gun but a future hall of famer and one of the all time great pitchers. Simply because he perfected his pitching mechanics and studied his opponent and mastered his best pitches. Heck, look at Jon Kruk..lol

I once thought Jordan was the greatest athlete but after seeing him humiliate himself playing minor league baseball, I changed that opinion quickly. I might have to go with Bo Jackson now but that's a what might have been.

Sorry, hopefully I didn't come off like Uncle Ricco from Nap. Dynamite. I hate people stuck in their pasts from 18 years ago..lol

Nice man, those are all pretty awesome accomplishments. I played a lot of baseball and only played against a few who threw 92 plus. The fact you could do all of those things kind of proves my point that all those achievements belong to a select few who possess exceptional natural ability. I could train In the gym and do plyometrics and perform all of the exercises necessary to improve at those things no doubt improving my time, fastball, and jumping ability. I can guarantee you though that I will never dunk, throw above 90, or run a sub 4.7 forty, I guarantee I could learn to surf though. Running marathons takes a lot of effort, cycling takes a lot of effort, I can train myself to do those things as well as surfing. Kelly Slater may be a better athlete than a lot of baseball players, Greg Maddox included; I just find it hard to believe that surfing has more athletic athletes than Football, soccer, basketball, track and field, gymnastics, etc.

Thanks. I don't really care about my past life in athletics lol. I was only trying to put surfing into perspective because i doubt few have been lucky to try the sport and get into it. I strongly suggest trying it if ever the chance presents itself. But to me personally, surfing by far is the hardest sport ive ever been involved with. Prior to it, I never thought about it. But now, I'm like "damn these guys are amazing athletes.". Easiest sport I've tried would be snowboarding.

  • If coach would've put you in senior year you would've won State! Haha jk, I don't ever recall seeing a fat, out of shape surfer that's for sure. I get the point you're making as we'll. I love snowboarding and frisbee golf, both suit my athletics abilities very well.

LOL. I think what I like best about snowboarding is you get to ride down the mountain and hop a lift on the way up. No walking required. LOL

I hear this all of the time. I also hear that basketball players are the best athletes of all sports. Not really buying either, completely, but just say that is true, why is the B1G so much better in basketball than the SEC? Maybe because you play basketball inside, and weather has no real effect on practice. What say you?

I say Urban Meyer thinks there's a ton more talent in the south, and SEC rosters are full of that talent.

I don't give a phuck what anyone else says after the master has spoken. Nobody else knows shit compares to the master who has coaches in both leagues.

Mods - please lock this thread now. There's no room for debate here.

Oh - nobody really cares about basketball - it's what you do when football is not on.

    You can't handle the truth
