Tight Race For Five-Star Johnson

Pittsburgh and Ohio State continue to battle for five-star offensive tackle Dorian Johnson of Belle Vernon (Pa.) High.

  • Easy recruiting pitch, go to Pitt you end up like Mark May. Come to OhioState you will end up like Orlando Pace.

    Buckes

  • It's hard to bash a kid for staying home, but Pitt wasn't even relevant in the horrible big east and will now get lost in the ACC with FSU etc.

pitt is somewhere between the MAC and a BCS conf. and they play in front of horrible crowds.

you come here you play in bcs games and title games. go there and it's maybe 8-4 or 6-6? and it's off to the meinike muffler bowl!

Always borrow money from a pessimist; he won't expect it back.

Orlando Pace is one of the best ever but Mark May is in the college football Hall-of-Fame and won the Outland Trophy. He was a first round pick and went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL where he was a Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl Champion. That ain't bad.

Then it is too bad he is no where near the announcer as he was the football player.

  • The touted Belle Vernon (Pa.) High standout says, “I think Pitt is still on top" .

It sounds as if even Johnson isn't sure if "Pitt is still on top".

I think the Buckeyes win this one !

  • if you want to play to maybe finish in the top 3 in the big east, go to Pitt (I think they went to Birmingham, AL for their bowl game last year).... if you want to be in the mix for BCS bowls & national championships, come play for us... we are only going to get better with quality recruiting & coaching over time.

  • Geography vs. Glory, I envy these young guys with the opportunities that they earn but that comes with a tough life changing decision for a 17/18 yo. I believe every High School stud recruited by tOSU should come be a Buckeye but that's my fan speaking. Stepping back I really can't get fired up over these choices....as long as they don't turn blue! Go Bucks!

Agreed. I'm gonna play the optimist as opposed to being a realist. I just don't understand how you could possibly compare the two. Pitt & OSU aren't even in the same universe. Pitt may be doing well this year...but that's for a team where their annual goal is to be competitive and finish above .500. Going for a conference championship or to a BCS bowl is a bonus. Here, at The OSU, conference championships are EXPECTED! Not bonuses. BCS bowls: EXPECTED! Matter of fact, The OSU is about 1-2 seasons away from National Title Games being expected. I understand the desire to stay close to home. But it's not like we're asking him to play in SoCal, or even SoCaro. It's Ohio. Right next door brother. Come on over.

Touche, Steve! The real issue with going to Pitt is that Pittsburgh is a Steeler town and always will be. Pitt will always suck hind tit (excuse the expression) in that city and will never really develop the kind of collegiate enthusiasm that you see at OSU ... or Tuscaloosa or similar college towns.

  • The comment about tOSU moving up since the visit is a classic set up statement where by the recruit knows where he's really headed but wants to stay classy about it so drops seeds before it's all over indicating that the supposed 2nd place team is truly a legitimate contender. He's allllll Buckeye from where I'm sitting:)

  • It was also in the brief period of when Pitt football was relevent.....Brief as it was. The likes of Mark May, Tony Dorsett.....all great athletes and long time retired. Can you please tell me the last player from Pitt who was relevant in the NFL? That Mark May argument could be very pertinent if the Johnson kid was being recruited in the 80's but it is 2012 and Pitt has not been relevent and I do not believe Chryst will make it relevent again anytime soon. So that being said, TOSU would be a much better choice if your college and then a potential NFL career is what you are concerned about IMHO. He is a bright kid and ultimately will make the decision that is best for him but using Mark May as the most recent success story from pit is very weak at best. I wish the young man the best in his decision and would love to see him in scarlet and grey! GO BUCKS!!!!
