  • After the Illinois game in 2007, I'm questioning this hire by the Colts.

  • just came on to announce this. Awesome news. I am happy for him. He will enjoy this a lot. He has so much to share with football players from a knowledge and game standpoint.

    Good luck COACH TRESSEL!!!

    Is that you Hooley?

  • As a Colts fan I wish they would fire Caldwell and hire JT ASAP!!

  • It would be odd seeing him in blue.

  • Congrats coach. I am glad he is moving on and I wish him nothing but the best. I hope he breaks out a blue sweater vest. Oh yeah and Hooley is still pissed off.

Haha, no, but I'm still very bitter about that Illinoi game in 2007. Watching in real time I knew that was a fumble, and Tressel should have challenged it regardless of whether the TV's were out upstairs.

  • This seems like a freaking odd hire.

First of all, the guy has millions...it's not like he needs the money. And I'm sure they aren't paying much for this job anyway.

Second, that has to be one of the most boring jobs in football...and it certainly doesn't require someone with coaching experience or even a college degree. Hell, half a day of rule training and any fan out of the stands could do that job.

Lastly, do Ellen and the kids/grandkids really want him travelling 5+ mo per year?

    Just seems odd to me.

You have to think he would have been bored out of his mind just sitting around. This gives him something to do, and it is with the NFL! Doesn't sound like a bad gig.

The Colts hired Tressel as a consultant to the head coach. As I asked a week ago, is he going to be suspended for the 1st five games?

That is what I was thinking. I wish him well.

First thing I mentioned to a friend. That fumble still pisses me off.

I immediately thought the same thing...why would a man who has been a head coach for so long take this job? It sounds like it has nothing to do with coaching or, like you said, requires any experience at all. I can't help but wonder if the Colts are hoping it will lead to him taking a coaching role in the future, but then again, I can't imagine what job they would give him. Just seems strange.

  • Wow, you would have to be really bored to want that job. I would rather coach a JV football team. This has to be demeaning to somebody of Tressel's stature.

  • Perhaps an answer to why Tressel took this gig:

    Putting 2 and 2 together.

    * Tress gets a job that seems out of left field and is, as we think of it, a shoulder-shrugger move at best

    * Remember the Tuesday boarding house? Taking Care’ Of Tress?

    -
Please allow me this: I would like to post that paragraph from the BH here and then clarify my position on it because I don't want the tying of two thoughts above to seem negative on Tress.

Here's the paragraph from the BHouse:
… The Ohio State-centric Web site SportsRappUp.com – owned and operated by former Bucknuts scribe Jeff Rapp – reported earlier this month former OSU head coach Jim Tressel was “being taken care of” financially by various boosters in exchange for keeping his mouth shut.

    -

    Here's my clarification of thought:
Just as with other issues when you hear of something that is happening, and there are views representing extreme opposites involving that event, the truth is found somewhere right in the middle.

I don't believe for one instant that Jim Tressel is being paid to shut up.
Not one iota of my being believes that.
I DO believe Jim Tressel is loved by so many that have connection to OSU, that they are sick of what happened to this man over something that seems so trivial.

I DO believe that taking care of Jim Tressel could simply mean that folks are trying their best to payback a man who, for over a decade, gave devoted service to The Ohio State University.

If it seems odd for him to take this gig, perhaps he's just trying one of those roads out that he referenced in that interview with 97.1?, where he said he was positive about the future, was looking at a number of avenues, and was totally excited for what might open up.

    -
Sometimes the math doesn't add up, but those 2 points kinda seem to , to me...

  • The question is, how long until he is a full-time NFL coach?

  • Could be a foot in the door kind of position?

    MIBusckeye

  • I understand totally what he's doing. He gets to hang around football, a great organization, and is only involved on weekends. He's not doing it for money, he's doing it to stay involved and relevant.

I think it's a hoot. Good luck to him.

Here's a quote from the story just posted about Dedication Park and Tress being in town for it:

"The Vest" also said he thinks about his former team on a daily basis and wishes the players and coaches well this fall.
"Those are my kids — that's the way I look at them," he said. "They'll be warm tomorrow, but they'll be fine."

""The university has given me opportunities that people only dream of," he said.

  • Smart move. I think Coach Tressel should position himself to be a HC in the NFL.
