Smash through to Victory
Maybe Urban taking another year off is a blessing in disquise. I know that I would love to see what Luke could do next year with a real offensive coordinator, no key players suspended for half of the season, and without all of the drama surrounding the program.
Coyoungin on twitter. Circular square movement.
You don't say "no" to Urban Meyer. Period. He would instantly make the Ohio State brand the most talked about in college football (in a positive way) and we would be near the top of the list for almost every top recruit in the country. Luke would be wise to stay as the DC as he would be part of another historic run and be as close to an automatic as you get to succeed Urban in 5 years or however long he decides to stay. This is an easy business decision for the trustees...
How about we let Luke complete his two years, bring in Urban for a handful of years and name Fick coach in waiting. It buys Urban another year off, gives Fick more experience and most importantly saves face for all parties involved.
I think the entire future of the program hinges on the Michigan game. If we go to Ann Arbor in position to win the division and lose, anything can happen, and if there is any truth to all the speculation about Urban Meyer, he might be the guy. I think the main advantage he would bring is the instant credibility with recruits.
However, if we are in that position and beat Michigan for the 8th year in a row and make it to Indianapolis at 9-3, how do you fire Fickell? Seriously?! That would basically be saying that no matter what he did we were going to get rid of him. That would have been fine if that had been made clear to him and everyone before the season- he is going to be the interim coach but after this year a new coach WILL be hired. If they lead him on for a year and he makes the Big Ten CG, they better hire him.
If we're 8-4 with an ugly loss to Michigan, though, someone else will likely take the job next year.
