Urban at QB club...

    Urban was just incredible on Tuesday...first he posed for almost 200 individual pictures with our group (QB Club) and then stayed afterwards and spoke to us which was much appreciated but unexpected.

    He talked of taking the last 2 months to totally evaluate this team academically and he came away very impressed with the work the last staff had done (gave them an A+)..
    but (and he said he is BRUTALLY honest) his first thought of looking at our team in person was they were the "sloppiest bunch I have ever seen"...note-he DOES like to exaggerate

    Said he really really likes Braxton , likes his work ethic, likes his effort, likes his family and he hopes someday
    he will LOVE him--but that remains to be seen.... Said that
    Stoney could be a big key to this season and he has challenged him to be the best he can be.....said he never walks by Stoney and says hi--it's always "what are you doing to get better"....said that Philly has really impressed him with the way he is working to watch film and work to get better....he really does not know yet if this team has the speed he wants--that is why they have been looking recruiting wise to find that speed.

    Said his offense is built around finding ways to get the
    ball to players that can make you miss...said his favorite
    thing is that he sits 4 hrs before EACH game and makes
    a list of who should touch the ball TODAY...he does not
    like to make short lists.

    Said that he will coach the Special Teams himself...said he
    trys to utilize his best and fastest players in order to block punts and then proudly said that in one of thier NC years at FLORIDA they blocked 9 Punts !!

    Said he has 5 Core Values for the Team...1.Do not disrespect women..2.NO lying...3. NO stealing....4. NO weapons...5. NO drugs....some have felt this wrath already.

    Said one of the most surprising things so far has been the change in size and scope of the University since he was here in the 80's...and then said the most surprising thing though has been the generosity of the alumni...said he and Shelly flew to the Bahamas on Saturday(to join the Spielman Cancer Cruise) and auctioned off 2 sideline passes to a game ("and not THE Game") for $36,000 !!...said he has been on "500 of these cruises in 10 years" and he has never seen ANY fans as generous as ours. He was totally blown away.

    And finally he said the Mission Statement for the Program is very simple....

    "Make the State of Ohio proud"

  • It's very clear to anyone with any knowledge of Lichter that all he's interested in is selling advocare, and it's been that way for a while now. Every person is entitled to making a living, but he was paid very well to be the strength and conditioning coach of The Ohio State University, not go around telling people (this is first hand, I attended one of his meet and greets) that advocare is "what OSU uses" so sign up for my multi level marketing program. Supplements are great, but his job was about the team and that's what he should have been spending time on, and I think we will see that with Marotti.

    The Florida boards do not feel that way about their replacement.

    I would say look Marotti's role, title, and salary and it will tell you a little bit about the disparity in qualifications - he is not a S&C coach.

  • You could see the skilled athlete difference when OSU played Florida. Several times we ran screens that were set up well early, Adams and Shugarts were not quick enough to get a body on a Gator MLB that blew right by them in open space.
    The regime has changed, but I have posted this several times, from a few friends whose kids played at OSU while Butch Reynolds was there, then early Lichter and their feedback thru recently, Butch Reynolds was a huge loss.
    They also said Lichther got away from weights and did a lot more flexibility type stuff, there is no surprise many of our OL cannot match other OL with weight rep's in the combines and we tended to get shoved around in the trenches.
    Marrotti is big into weights as well as speed, you will see a big strength upgrade across the board, plus speed thru conditioning and better diets to get the body fat down.

  • The most noticeable thing about Urban is how he has absolutely zero problem singling out players. He is incredibly forthcoming. If he's thinking it, he's saying it. The media must absolutely love him.

    For us fans, we have a much better idea of whats going on. With JT there was so much speculation and everything seemed rosy. With Urban, we know what needs to happen and who needs to step up.

    All this talk does tend drive me crazy though, I can't wait to see the players hit the practice field and start hitting again! I'm guessing coach Meyer's spring practices are going to be pretty new and eye opening to some players. They will definitely be pretty fun for us fans to watch; getting to see the new coaching staff really go to work, and really - no slight to the importance of recruiting - do what they're getting paid the big-bucks to do..

  • Was at the same event. Not so sure Urban would endorse a Blow by Blow - especially when he's being so Candid.
    When he mentioned "Sloppy", he specifically called out the Offensive Line, no one else.
    Plus, he was VERY high on Philly Brown. I assume this means he can cure the 'dropsies.'

  • I was there at the QB Club today as well. Urban is a great speaker. Coach Bruce and Pete Johnson spoke too, and were great!!! It was great to meet Urban, I will post my picture from the QB club once I get it...
