Voting Gone Wild

Why Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune -- and many other sportswriters -- used faulty logic when voting for Manti Te'o to win the Heisman Trophy. Te'o finished second.

Haha. Yes, I believe there are four living Heisman winners from OSU: Cassady, Griffin, George and Smith. And really, Archie should get two ballots per year. (But he does not -- only gets one.)

  • Another good thing that will come from this Teo story. Maybe some voters will be more inclined not to vote for "stories" rather than performance.

  • This is almost sickening to hear. Heisman is very political for sure and Teo wasn't even close in my opinion. Also Shazier was more dominant on his team. ND. Going to NC helped but to think he voted that way base on that story completed degrades and humiliates the Heisman voting standards. It's almost embarrassing to sports writers in general. ND homer.

Do you honestly believe he voted for the story. Dude is just hacked off and trying to keep the stupid story alive. And if he did than take his vote away it's suposed to be an award for the best player not story and he's a fool with not enough common sense to even have a vote.

  • This a great example of how the media thinks--or , should I say , doesn't think ! No wonder we don't trust the media---they continually screw up whatever they touch--if you don't believe it , just look at how they picked our socialist leaders !

  • All of America was buying into Teo's crap. Americans love human interest stories and they love drama. They love fairy tales. They are incapable of logic. Hell Bucknuts even had a thread on why Teo should win the Heisman. I'd attach it but out of respect for the OP on that thread, who I do respect greatly, I won't because he probably feels like the rest of America who wanted to believe in something. Its not his fault this whole thing was a hoax.

It seems that everybody outside of OH loved Teo simply because his grandma and girlfriend died. I don't even believe Teo was a top five LB in the NCAA this year. Let alone the 2nd best player in America. And many of us have been saying as such since his Heisman chatter began.

Teo is the definition of the media hype machine going to work so they can fabricate drama and draw readers/traffic.

Teo may be innocent in all this. However I don't believe so. But whats going unnoticed is the portion of guilt that should be placed on some of these writers. (looking at you Gene Wojciechowski with that egg on your face!!!)

Thanks Biddle for calling out some of these folks using faulty logic and manipulating all of this how they see fit like selfish children.

  • One thing is for certain. Ryan never Lied on his D!$/,

  • Shazier is no where nearly as good as Teo at this time. Prior to this scandal Teo was scheduled to be a top 5 pick. Teo also had 7 picks which is rare for a LB, including the game clincher against Oklahoma. He also played fewer snaps because ND's D caused a lot of 3 and outs. Teo deserving of the Heisman, no. Deserving of the Butkus, yes.

  • Manti is gay. His male friend set this up as a cover story so that they would't be ostracized from the ultra conservative Morman church.

  • I believe that without the sob story angle Te'o would not have been in the Heisman running ever. Having a great story and being from ND is just too good to pass up for many in the media. The media looks for excuses to shine the spot light on ND, always has. Had Manti won the Heisman he would have just been one of several Domers who undeservedly won a Heisman..

100% in agreement. Teo is a hell of a LB. Maybe one deserving of a top 5 pick. But he is in no way a Heisman worthy LB. And he never was.

Legit Heisman talk began when he told his sob story and America ate it up.

  • Notre Dame, and the school's players, always get more credit than that earned. It is a fact of life. Always has been.

Te'o is a very good LB. That is not even in question. But, there are several outstanding LBs, including Shazier, who had equivalent years statistically and in terms of impact, who got very little credit from the media.

The two reasons that Te'o was second in the Heisman balloting were that he played for ND and he had this story, which now appears to be fraudulent. Setting aside all of the inconsistencies in Te'o's explanations, one has to wonder. How could anyone who attended such a great school (academically) have believed for years that this woman was: (i) real; and (ii) his girlfriend.

In my opinion, and that is all it can be since no one except Te'o and his cohorts has all the facts, this entire story was created to give Te'o a chance to get the Heisman and increase his draft status.

NFL GMs do make mistakes, but even the worst of them has to be questioning whether this guy is worth a high draft pick.

  • If it was down to stats i'm sure Speilman would've won the heisman by a landslide at LB here. what a douche of a voter.

They play different positions in different schemes but you've also bought in to his hype. He caught a few tipped passes this year. He isn't Laranitis. Look at his career stats, the picks were an anamoly. He wasn't going to be a top 5 pick. That was part of the media hype. There are literally dozens and dozens of better LBers in CFB right now. Ryan Shazier is most certainly a better NFL prospect.
