What I Would Do With Jamal Marcus

  • That's kind of a homoerotic title. Sorry for that.

    So after Meyer's comments about his highlight video and the fact that he made the Yahoo homepage (which is good for 2 million pageviews), I checked out his video and dear god that's something.

    You just rarely see players get after it like that and finish plays with such vigor. Plus the speed and recognition he had was uncanny. I am not really sure why this guy didn't garner a higher ranking.

    The problem is that he's one of those tweeners. DE/LB 6-2 and 230.....

    If I recall correctly Thaddeus Gibson was a similar size and spent a year as a redshirt but was on the depth chart as a LB.

    His redshirt freshmmen year at some point he was moved to the rush end position. I distinctly remember being at the Wisconsin game and seeing him come in at DE and saying to my friend next to me "This is his first play at the position in a real game". He tossed the Badger tackle aside and got a sack fumble. It was glorious.

    Gibson essentially had the same frame as Marcus.

    I would go into next year with the idea of having Marcus redshirt but having him not fool around by playing any LB. He thrives on playing at the line and attacking upfield. I'd almost feature him on the scout team to get him acclimated to the size of the big ten. He needs reps and it's just good to have someone that agressive keeping the intensity level up in scrimmages although I worry about the safety of some of our guys.

    Come his sophomore year he should have the frame to potentially start or at a very least be a passing down substitution similar to what the Niners did with Aldon Smith this year.

    If you haven't seen the highlight reel (and yes all reels are impressive) do yourself a favor and check it out. Marcus just has that bad mofo disposition combined with athleticism, technique, and could awareness that you rarely see.

    He's going to hurt some people. I rarely get excited about a recruit given it's kind of a crapshoot but man Marcus is just foaming at the mouth to hit some people.

    Gibson only weighed about 215# when he came to OSU and left at 240#. This kid is way ahead of Gibson. My only question is the level of HS he had in NC.

    NC h.s. football is not close to Ohio as far as coaching is concerned BUT there are plenty of excellent athletes in NC. Once he gets coached up a little bit - this kid is going to be a typical SILVER BULLET style player.

  • Does this video remind anyone else of Shazier's highlight tape? I had some concerns about him moving back to linebacker and not just constantly rushing the qb because that was all that was on the tape. But Marcus, like Shazier, just looks so fluid out there. I think he's going to be able to make the transition well, too.

    We've got a pool and a pond. . . . pond would be good for you.

  • He is a linebacker all the way according to Meyer

    DougHeffernan

  • To be honest his highlights remind me of what we say in Shazier. Shazier is/was taller an leaner, but the highlights of coming off the edge. Showing the speed, athleticism, tenacity and the power in the tackle, just looks like Shazier's HS highlights.

    You cannot get over the physical difference, because Shazier looks leaner, but I think the highlights show same, basic player. So I think what you have is 2 guys who are destined to play as an OLB, and have the quickness to come off the edge every once in awhile. I think Shazier and Marcus will not have any problem tackling in space, and eventually will be very good cover guys on the TE and RB's out of the back field.

    I am excited to think what a year in the weight room has done to fill Shazier out. Assuming that any extra lbs does not take away from Ryan's side line to side line speed.

  • I'm thinking that Duane was projecting him as Big Kat 2, since the Williams and Perkins are outside backers.

  • Since Meyer is here it seems like a day does not go by without a "the next Percy Harvin" quote... what you think of these...

    Schutt= Quinn Pitcock
    Adolphus= Will Smith
    Pittman = Cam Heyward
    Spence= Gholston (great in college- NFL?)

    I think a few of these guys make their own name too.....Others....

    MLB all the way!!!!

    You've got to put this guy in the middle of the linebacking crew, and let his instincts, speed, and strength take over. I see him as a bigger, stronger, equally fast version of Brian Rolle.

    Isn't Rolle in the NFL?

    BooBahBuckeye

  • Don't love the idea of him at DE because we just took 3 tremendous talents at this position. Though I think the only true rush end is Spence because Washington will grow into the strong side and I think Pittman will too......

    In all Marcus' game tape, there isn't anyone who comes close to flying around the field like he does. I'd like to see him stay at backer.....but expect him to come off the edge at times

    Curtis Grant on the strong side, Marcus in the middle, Shazier on the weakside: If in the next couple of years this is our linebacking crew, it could be the most athletic lb crew ever at OSU (in my memory).

    Now put Adolphus Washington/Pittman on the strong side DE and Noah Spence/Perry on the weakside: I'm about going to faint from the excitement!

    This is serious athletic ability: SERIOUS!

    (Now can they play football? LOL).

  • I am pretty sure THE COACHES will know what to do with him. You are not coaching nor will you be there to input. And no chance he will put is hand down.
