What We Learned: Kansas 64, OSU 62

The Buckeyes led by 13 on five different occasions in first half, but the Jayhawks stole the victory. We break down what went wrong, look ahead to next year and more in WWL.

  • Brutal loss... This article always helps me cope with losses... However, I think next year's team could be pretty good. Craft and lenzelle will return, we will have a true center and 2 freaky athletic wings (Thompson and Ross). The bench will be decent, with Scott and ravenal Playing equal minutes with lenzelle/Williams

  • I think thomas comes back. He has not proved anything. Sully on the other hand is behind the big man from kentucky and Robinson and a couple of more player. He is a tweener. He has no shot and the big guys give him trouble just ask withy.

  • We learned that osu choked worse than hoax did last night at the golden corral on their all you can eat chicken wings.

We learned that the refs called some really weak fouls on Thomas.

We learned that our focus in the last five minutes of the game wasn't what we needed.

  • We lost this game on defense. Did anyone notice that we gave up something like 6 lay-ups/dunks in a row during one stretch in the second half? Ever hear of stopping the ball on the fast break or the "no lay-ups" rule? They got way too many easy baskets starting with that last play of the first half. This is a theme when the Bucks lose, btw: too many easy buckets.
Also, I about had a heart attack watching Craft ease the ball to the front court on every second half possession. How many times did the shot clock go down to 26 seconds before he moseyed over half court?
Don't get me wrong, I love this team, and never thought we would lose--it was heartbreaking to watch us give that game away like we did. But I blame the D for the loss every bit as much as the O (maybe more).

  • No sour grapes here, but we learned that whomever won this game was going to get smashed by KY on Monday. Maybe Kansas will get smashed a little less, but besides being long, I don't see how they can compete with Kentucky. The Louisville game was a joke - KY was sleepwalking through it, and when they realized they were tied, they turned it on and Louisville was dead.

Great season after a scary 2nd half of January and month of Feb. Proud of the Bucks for turning it on in March. Fun tourney - too bad they couldn't play Monday night.

We did not stop the ball from going to the rim 4 times in transition, and that ended up being the game for us.

Hats off to Kansas - their defense was what turned the game for them, but we needed to stop the ball in transition.

Im not going to say alot but I don't see DT leaving he has alot to learn he needs to get stronger and next year he could be a lottery pick . I think if Only Sully leaves and we have no transfers this team will be just fine..

  • Pretty simple to sum up our downfall. The first and last five minutes of each half are the most critical times of the game. The first five you set the tone for the half and the last five you finish things off. Tonight our downfall was these two segments in the second half. In the first five minutes we came out and failed to initiate the offense by first going inside and reversing the basketball which resulted in shots being taken after 1 or 2 passes. The results were we lost momentum, allowed Kansas to get their transition game going and went nearly seven minutes without scoring a single point. Secondly neither Thomas or Smith could establish a second outside threat after the first eight minutes of the game which was vitally important to the overall scheme of the offense. That pretty much sums up our demise in which I believe (had we played an entire game to our potential) a loss to a inferior team.

  • We learned that it was a helluva run and we just couldn't hit a j in 2nd half. We were the better team!

  • If DT returns, we'll be really good! Next years team will be very athletic! Hats off to Will, he played his ass off!

As always and forever, Go Bucks!

  • Thomas only played 23 minutes, I believe. 17 minutes we were without the tournament's leading scorer and we lose by 2. Kansas without Robinson or Taylor for an equal amount of time, we destroy them. Sully missing 14 minutes in the first half at Syracuse, Thomas last night, the refs just crippled us. Against UK, our five straight up I think we could hang, but probably would have seen one or more of our key players in foul trouble.

  • No disrespect! but Damn that hurt! Good Luck in the NBA Buford!

    GO BUCKS!

  • This game was a case of a Superior team losing focus and thus losing the game to a not even close to great Kansas team. Robinson got away with murder cause he is a 1st team AA. He shoved off on his defender on every play and never hardly left the lane. If we woulda won...we may have given Kentucky a descent game, been competitive. But, Kansas will be blown out by halftime. I will watch some of the game monday because i must but it will be a big letdown. This was a great season for our Bucks...gotta give tem credit, at 1 point during the season, most of us had written them off. Glad i was wrong there about that. I have a strange feeling but maybe Sully stays 1 more yr and so does Thomas and we make another run at it again next year...i guess we can hope!!! Go Bucks!!

  • Hate to sound negative but it seems to be always a bridesmaid never a bride with Matta. I mean at this point it's NC or bust. We need to find a way to finish.
    That second half was ridiculous.
Never been a matta fan. When are we going to be the Kentucky of the tournament?

  • Great season! Very disappointing loss.Team seems to lose intensity at some key times and that cost us last night. We had it but could not close it.

The story was a little rough on Scott who lets remember is a freshman. The guy has quicks and just needs some seasoning and some confidence building regarding shot.He will be an asset next year.

Great to see Buford go out playing an excellent final game. Will be interesting to see what he does in NBA.

Thanks to the entire team and coach Matta for an outstanding season!!!!
