What We Learned: Kansas 74, OSU 66

The Buckeyes fail to get revenge on Kansas as Aaron Craft's disappointing season continues. What does this loss mean long-term for Ohio State due to its weak non-con schedule?

  • The Basketball purists would know better....but in the annuals of tOSU Badketball, I've never seen a worse outing....nothing good to say. Painful...

  • I saw a few bright spots. Scott coming around and Williams looks to be getting it more and more. Solid d kept a terrible shooting game close. Learn and move forward because conference play will be a challenge every night.

  • I agree it's way to early to worry yet. I think Williams showed a little of what he can be and Ross showed none of what he should be.

  • Kansas plays so well as a team. Kudo's to Coach Self. Mcl...is a Pro playing college ball. We don't have a talent like him this year.

Amir needs to play more minutes. He elevates his game against the better teams just like last year. His upside is so much greater than Rav's.

Scott's ability to create shots for his teammates and his abilty to create pace demands he play more than 25 minutes. Look at his stat line(s) no turnover. And he is an exceptional defender.

With Craft playing below average again at the offesive end coupled with Smith's struggles this game Thomas was suffocated with 2-3 defenders.

Ross's piss poor attitude keeps him from advancing as a player.

We are a good team right now. There is enough time to get better.

I agree 150 percent with this. Matta can say "We know what we're doing" when Baptist asked him about the big man recruiting void last 2 years.

But no impact big in the program has left them in this predicament -- they can't put the ball on the block and work inside out because nobody ever needs to double their bigs ever and when you don't make your 3's you are dead in the water ... like today.

Their hustle and tenacity kept them in it. Field goal droughts of 4, 10 and 5 minutes each toook them out of it.

Amir was a Mickey D's AA. Hard to blame this on recruiting. Not making shots was a bigger factor as you mentioned with the droughts.

They swung and missed on a ton of good to great bigs like Coleman, Parker, etc. Amir is only beginning to get his career going. And Sully leaving after 2 years hurt them a bit. No big in 2012 or so far in 2013. That's my point. They need some help, maybe a JC for next year that can plug right in.

If Amir panned out, no one would be talking about big-man recruiting. A 2013 recruit wouldn't have helped today (I'll be here all week).

This was all about craptastic shooting, IMO. Craft is leading the charge in that department.

  • I just think it's incredible how poor the outside shooting is. A lot of those shots were complete bricks on open looks. These guys are big time college basketball players. I know many of them didn't come to OSU as shooters, but one would've hoped there'd be more noticeable improvement by this point.

  • We are soft in the middle and dependent on the outside shot. Frankly, we are a poor shooting team against good competition and we will have great difficulty with a tough Big 10. As Batman, Deshaun will need a Robin to share the scoring load on a consistent basis...

  • Williams is coming on and did a very credible job against their 7'2' big man who is a very polished and savvy senior. Our most serious problem is our lack of dependable shooting at four out of five postions. As bad as we played, if we had shot just 30% in the second half, we could have won this game. Instead we shot closer to 20% and we had a lot of wide open looks. Kansas starts four very experienced seniors and their fifth starter is a freshman and a lottery pick. We have one senior who gives us mighty effort but just isn't a factor against other truly big men. We have only three players with any game experience aganst top competition. My point is . . .we have lost to two very good teams and we are very young and inexperienced.
I still have hopes that our youngsters can continue to improve and we can finish in the top 4 or 5 in the B1G. Craft's numbers are disappointing but he is taking shots that he ordinarily wouldn't because NOBODY else is making shots.
I still think this team has a chance to be really good by the end of the season and that is when it counts.

  • I really hate to say this but this team has no marquee talent. Thomas is our best but he will get crushed during Big 10 play. Good teams will stop him cold. Craft is overrated as a defender and has little or no offense to speak of. His passing and ballhandling are good but he shouldn't be a starter. Same for Smith Jr., he is no great shooter or driver to the basket. He is maybe our 2nd best rebounder but what does that say about us? The best player with the most upside is Scott but offensively he is a work in progress, but he is a tremendous ballhandler and playmaker on O and D. There is also nothing from the bench and Matta gets outcoached in big games OOC most of the time. We need to face it that our team is very overrated, definitely not a top 10 or 15 team, maybe a top 20 to 25 team and i will be surprised if we finish higher that 6th in the Big ten.

Craft shouldn't be a starter and we're a borderline top 25 team? All because we lost a close game at Duke, and lost to a very good Kansas team in which we missed a ton of open shots? Granted, we're not a great shooting team, but we're not as bad as we were today, either.

We have to remember that Kansas starts four seniors, and their other starter is a freak who will probably be a top 5 pick in the NBA draft next year. We're not an elite team, but we still are very dangerous.

  • You shoot 30% and they shoot 50% usually equals a loss.

  • I learned that the word " great " & Craft should NEVER be used in the same sentence. Great point guards don't score 0 pts in multiple games , great point guards don't score less than 5 pts in multiple games , great point guards show up for big games , great point guards don't repeatedly make bad decisions & commit turnovers in critical moments in the game.

I learned that Craft's defense is overrated. Somehow in some peoples mind getting 2 steals a game translates into great defense , but overlook him repeatedly getting beat off the dribble and/or getting lit up from 3.
