What We Learned: Kansas 74, OSU 66

No offense, jacob, but I suggest that you posted without "a step back and thinking".

This team bears no resemblance to the two previous teams that went to the elite 8 and final 4.

Sully, Diebler, Lighty and Buford are gone.

That means, by comparison, this team has no inside scoring presence. No outside shooting threat besides DT. And if he is cold or otherwise kept him check, this team cannot score. While they play good defense at times, the highlight reel dunks on KU's in-bounds plays were an embarrassment. The KU players and media commentators were laughing their asses off at this OSU team last night in case you weren't paying attention. The Schott was nearly empty in the last 2 minutes.

There are two schools of thought about this OSU b-ball team right now if I can generalize:

    1. This team will continue to improve as the year goes on; we should be encouraged by the fact that we played Duke and KU as closely as we did despite horrid shooting; we'll be better...just you wait; don't be a pussy and sell out.

    2. This team is grossly over-rated and will be around 11-7 or 10-8 in the Big this year and lose in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney, especially if they get a bad draw. The evidence is overwhelming that they have no low post scoring presence and no consistent outside threat besides DT. Time to take off the S&G glasses and stop whining like a bitch because this team is not as good as we had hoped.

Maybe there is a middle ground between the 2 polar opposites I present above. If there is, I would welcome reading it.

Nice post, I think that sometimes you think I disagree with you , could be I'm just not as well spoken.

I'm hoping for option #1 but I fear it may be option #2. Rav, Scott, Thompson, Ross, and Williams all minimal bench players last year and virtually no offense, so unless summer camp had pixie dust sprinkling over it , well, I think this team may get better but I don't think this is the year. I can live with that.

Sorry, I disagree. If Amir had panned out he might not even be here right now. We can't have ONE big man only and beat the top programs. We've seen this for years, now.

We're always trying to overcome a size disadvantage when we play the top programs in the country. We to reverse this trend. MORE BIGS!

Well you better start asking Matta to start paying players like Calipari does. Ohio State isn't Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. This isn't like football where we have our pick of the litter.

If Amir panned out, no one would be talking about big-man recruiting. A 2013 recruit wouldn't have helped today (I'll be here all week).

This was all about craptastic shooting, IMO. Craft is leading the charge in that department.

I thought Amir looked good today, overall. He plays a certain role and a certain way...I think Thad wants more out of him, but I think we look better when he's playing.

Lenzelle played bad...if he shoots well today, we win. Other than Thomas, Lenzelle is the most reliable scorer we have that is a confident scorer and all around solid player. The others lack confidence or they just struggle shooting or on defense, etc. We need Lenzelle to play well for us to win any of these tougher games. And by the way, I love Lenzelle as a player, he just shot poorly today and against Duke.

  • Craft is a great defensive player but has no confidence in his offense. For us to be a national contender or even at the top of the B10 he has to be able to produce in the scoring column on a consistent basis. We were able to get buy the past two seasons because we had more of a presence in the paint and on the perimeter but now we need a PG who can score the ball consistently. He is passing up on opportunities to take it to the hoop that made him a better player the past 2 seasons.

I agree it's way to early to worry yet. I think Williams showed a little of what he can be and Ross showed none of what he should be.

Agreed. I still say the coaches are asking Craft to be what he is not and its affecting his all around game. Let him alone, don't ask him to be what he is not and his game will jump back to the high level it used to be! I don't agree that Scott is very good. Granted his floor game has improved as well as his defense (which can still improve a lot), but his scoring is very suspect (banked 3 pointer) and I believe with both he and Craft in the game, it affects Craft's game on the negative side. Craft is not a scorer! Also, Ross is NOT ready for the big time, too slow, in both areas, and I think his playing time will go down as we get into conference play. Maybe next year he will start to come around, but not ready this year. Shame, we need scorers as the whole world notice yesterday. Where was LS? Thompson started well, then disappeared. Never going to get a lot of scoring in the paint. However, with all this being said, Coach Matta will still get this team in position to challenge for the conference title and another ticket to the big dance. Go Bucks

  • I love what Matta has done for the program and don't wish for another.....however, i'm fairly confident tOSU loses these big time OOC games because we have no reliable set offense. A couple of weave-type screens on the wings is not an offense. He's got to change, similar to now using his bench more, or it will be the same forever.

I didn't realize Thad's record was below .500 against ranked teams (ref. Bucknuts pre-game article). When you don't have an offense, you will lose these games like the record shows.

I notice Jent is drawing up plays in timeouts this year. New???

Is it me or does AC now have a hitch in his jump shot? He looks extremely uncomfortable. I agree with other posters that he's passing up a lot more drive-shots than his first two years. At least 3-4 yesterday.

Amir "worst hands since Jim Smith"....Classic

    I'm glad it's only December. C'mon Bucks!!!!!
