What We Learned: OSU 85, Duke 63

  • Impressive win....not ready to say they are better than last year yet. If they can come out of Kansas with a W, that will be an even bigger statement than the beatdown put on Duke IMO.

  • Last night, OSU came off not as a boring midwestern town but a very cool/upbeat city with a lot of national celebrity involved, interested and a part of the culture...LeBron, Wade, all the former stud basketball players, Coach K, Dicky V, and - oh yah - arguable the best team in the country at the current time! Very cool to see! And Urban wasn't even gratuitously there...he was stealing top 100 recruits!!

  • I wish people would stop complaining about the 7 man rotation.

We are talking about 19 yr old kids playing 40 minutes of basketball. These kids play more than that every day I'm sure.

There are all kinds of TV timeouts and long breaks in big games like this and tourney games. Unless they are out of shape big boys like Oden and Sully last year, they all seem to have plenty of energy.

The team versatility allows for us to only sub 2 guys and move players around to rest everyone that needs it.

  • Dave-
Nothing to do with the game, but when do you expect Tony Parker and Amile Jefferson to announce where they are going?

Backcourt of Duke was too young. Rivers was just amazing to watch. He ever learns to pass the ball to go along with that crossover of his....look out.

I don't think OSU is 20 points better than Duke. OSU was hot tonight and Duke was ice cold. Yes some of it was due to defense but Duke missed a lot of open looks and even easy cherry picking shots.

I know OSU is a better team than Duke. OSU is just a more complete team and a more athletic bunch which was evident in the transition game. Did Duke score anything in transition all night? If they did it wasn't much. While OSU kept getting open look after open look in the first half. It was a shooter's buffet.

Great performance and a great win over a good team.

We will probably meet these guys again down the road. The bad news? Duke always improves during the season and will not have another cold night like last night. The good news? Ohio State under Matta also improves greatly and it is scary to think what this Buckeye team could become. Great game in an electric atmosphere.

  • It was a great performance, but it's still a regular season game. Duke was a bit flat and probably tired. They had an impressive run in winning the Maui Invitational. We should enjoy the win. Until OSU wins a championship it's great to win games like this, and we looked very impressive doing it, but I wouldn't talk too much trash about Duke.

  • In his post game comments Coach K mentioned his team having played "tired". From an ESPN article, "Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said the fatigue from last week’s trip to Hawaii played a role in the Blue Devils’ struggles. 'I thought Ohio State played a great game against us. They were a fresher team,” he said. “I thought our team played tired.'” If you look at the schedule, Ohio State has played the same number of games as Duke over exactly the same period of time. In fact, despite the fact that Duke had to travel back from Maui (tough assignment), they had six days off since their last game. The Buckeyes had 4. I recognize travel does take a toll on players but you would think that fatigue wouldn't be a factor after 6 days. I think what happened was that Duke's lack of athleticism was exposed tonight. It certainly makes you optimistic for this season is you are a Buckeye fan.

Both are waiting until the spring to announce. I am 95% confident we get Parker. Not sure about Jefferson.

He also went on to say fatigue alone does not account for everything that happend. He said flat out they got their butts kicked. I am not a fan of his, but his presser was really spun in different ways depending on the website you go to. Just read Jeff Goodman's article on CBS Sportsline and compare to ESPNs. Let's face it, ESPN has a certain investment in Duke, so they are going to protect it.

As for what we learned, more than anything, 7 players. That's it 7 PLAYERS. 20+ point lead with 10, 8, 6, 5 minutes left... it didn't matter. 7 PLAYERS. Wow. But, like Dave said, hard to argue with Matta's success.

I got a chance to chat with a few ex-players yesterday morning and everyone of them wishes they could go back and have their OSU play this one to see who is best (hint that includes two seperate final 4 teams). To me, that is the biggest sign of respect one player can have for another. None of them are suprised at what happend last night. In fact, they called it. Needless to say, I was. That's one of the things that Matta has done quitely here. He brings back the alums. He shows, by inviting them and welcoming them back, that OSU does have a lot of history. Yes, we are a football school, but it is closer to 1a and 1b nowadays thanks to Thad.

  • We Learned that Coach K had the ability to throw in the towel and quit.

    SheHateMe

  • also worth mentioning that most of plumlee's pts were off uncontested dunks (times he was open on fast breaks, or just over committed to their guards & didn't rotate,etc).... i think the stats make the sullinger/plumlee matchup seem closer than it actually was, but i can only remember 1 or 2 contested baskets from plumlee & i can't remember a single basket plumlee created for himself with his back to the basket.... sullinger was dominant.... & if we can continue to get that type of performance from the rest of our starting 5 we will be very difficult to beat.

Look at this quote. "I've had my butt kicked before," Krzyzewski said. "We've kicked some butt. Tonight my butt's sore." Coach K is a class act. When he refers to Duke losing he takes credit. When he refers to his team winning, he gives credit to his team. I wish that we had politicians who would act in a similar fashion. Great win for the Buckeyes and some suttle lessons for all of us. Go Bucks!

Now that's called being butt hurt without being "butt hurt." Class act.

I don't get the hate for Coach K that a lot of people have. It just comes across as jealousy. Let's see, a guy that wins the right way, has turned Duke from a decent little program into the premier program in college basketball during his tenure ... and he won a Gold Medal as the head coach of Team USA in the 2008 Olympics. What a jerk!

I do not like Duke and I am not a Coach K fan. I have always felt that, in the game, they whine entirely way too much. It's more of a problem with the way they, particularly Coach K, try to manipulate/intimidate the officiating. That is the #1 reason I don't like them. The #2 reason I don't like either is simply they are easy to root against. They are the poster child for the "haves" of NCAA basketball. They are the favorites... the goliaths. They are loved on by most media outlets to the point where if you aren't a fan you feel uncomfortable. That has sort of created an us versus them mentality with Duke. You are either a huge Duke fan or you are rooting against them.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Coach K. The guy is clearly a great coach and by all appearences has a lot of integrity. That doesn't mean I am going to automatically root for him.

Agree the uncontested dunks made the Plumlee/Sullinger matchup look closer than it was in reality. However, I do remember one time in the first half he backed down Sullinger and got a basket. I remember mostly becaused I yelled SULLY, you can't let that bum do that to you.

    Tripol...

I agree. There seems to be three types of fans with Duke. 1. Duke fan. 2. Duke hater. 3. NC State fan

For whatever reason, NC State fans cheer for Duke. I think it has something to do with their hatred of UNC. However, some of them act like they have won when Duke does in the tourney. The rest of the ACC seems to hate them but not NC State.

True, true, true. Gonna be a fun season of OSU hoops. They are better than last year, although they will miss Diebler's three-point shooting at times. I thought Lighty's D would be a huge loss because he was such a lockdown defender, but with Craft and Smith being such good defenders, the D is more than fine. Craft should win Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year or there should be an investigation. Jordan Taylor won it last year over Lighty and Craft, which was a joke IMO. Taylor is an excellent defensive player, but he's not as good as Lighty or Craft.

Craft has a chance to go down as the best PG in OSU history. He'll stay all four years and break all kinds of assists and steals records.

I agree with all of this, Dave. Probably the most complete "team"performance I have ever seen by a Matta team, and an OSU home crowd. The "nut house with its reconfigured student seating is becoming a real home court advantage!
My real concern for this team failing in the final four, or even failing to make the final four is if they run into a talk athletic team like Kentucky, Uconn, North Carolina, Syracuse, or even Alabama. Seems like that's what kills us every year, even with Sully last season, Kentucky's height and athletisim was able to neutralize Sully enough to make us look pedestrian. I feel the one weakness of this team is lack of a star Center, and some athletic "trees" in the paint. This inability to match up with taller much more athletic teams than Duke could be our doom.
Other than that, this looks like the most deep and complete team I have seen under Matta. While young, the long season will offer the top 8 freshman and sophomore players the valuable experience they need to take their games to the next level! We are so lucky to have Thad Matta And Urban Meyer as the best Coaching combo in college sports!

  • People can make excuses of being tired, over traveled, refree calls, shots not falling, etc...but its kind of like some one said about recognizing pronography--"You know it when you see it""....a butt kicking- you knew it when you saw it!

  • Troy Smith was tired, over weight, and over traveled against Florida. Can we have a redo?

  • We learned that VCA can indeed be made to rock. When Duke fans are whining that their players couldn't hear Coach K's instructions because it was too loud, that tells you something. It takes more fans and more energy than the old SJA takes, but it can be done. Don't let anybody say that VCA is an inherently bad venue for basketball.
