What We Learned: Ohio State 29, Purdue 22 (OT)

  • Fullback26 said...

Miller is not concussed. OSU released a statement that he has no head, neck, shoulder or CONCUSSION symptoms. Urban Meyer was quoted as saying "He'll be fine."

Michigan State said William Gholston had the wind knocked out of him. Braxton looked like he was knocked out for a second, or at the very least extremely woozy. I'd bet a doctor would diagnose him with a concussion. OSU has no obligation to say anything about his injury. Therefore, when they do comment, they have no obligation to be forthcoming.

I'm glad that Miller is not seriously hurt. But he at least suffered a mild concussion IMO, no matter what the "official word" is from OSU.

  • I am not sure I would call us a bad football team but have to agree this is not a Top 10 team. I have come to believe every since the second game of the season that this team is not going to be pretty to watch all the time and will be inconsistent but nevertheless will win. I am still fairly confident that we will run the table. Next week we will wear down Penn State to take a close win. Illinois should prove fairly easy that is if this team is capable of making anything easy. Wisconsin will most definitely be a stiffest remaining contest but they play a style of football that our defense seems to thrive on and their defense is not that stalwart. Then the rivalry spirit and playing at home will carry us through The Game. Besides their offense could not even score a touchdown against Michigan State at home today.

  • No one mentioned the spotting of PU balls ran out of bounds and forward progress... Swear one was about 2&half extended gain for 1st down.

  • True this team underachieved today, but give them credit for not giving up and actually winning the game. After all purdue is a team that took ND to the wire as well and ND is ranked Highly....also that team barely squeaked by MSU today. Defense played much better today. The special teams, not so much.

We learned Storm should not see the field yet they keep going back to him. Burned badly on first play and we still go back to him?! It has been said enough, but play the young guys Fick, how could they possibly be worse? Thoughts and prayers to Brax! Nice work to Kenny G, smooth.....

Storm got beat but all the other guys were on the wrong side of the field. A linebacker is not supposed to be able to cover a running back one on one.
This play showed how weak our coaching and teaching on defense is. There is no way Klein should have had to cover the whole left side of the field by himself. The same thing happened onPurdue's last score when a simple bubble screen allowed one guy to run right by five defenders untouched. Lets play for help before next week.

  • Regarless of how badly we played at times, it was a great win and the WHOLE TEAM rose to the challenge when it had to.

We pray that Braxton is not seriouly injured. I feared for the worst.

Special congrats to Kenny Guiton who played like a pro when the chips were down.

Regardless of Braxton's condition, Urban has to think of a way to get both of these guys in the game on some plays. Kenny is by far our best passr and Brax is our best threat to break it all on a run. Carlos can bust it up the middle. We just need to design an offenase that recognizes these skill sets . . .if we want to have our best chance to win out. WE CAN STILL DO IT!

Yeah, it was atrocious. I usually don't like writing about poor officiating, but it was so bad that I had to include it.

So, in Ohio State's defense, one of the reasons Purdue almost won was because the officials were a complete joke.

Don't forget that first 'fumble' - Braxton clearly had the ball and he was down at that point!

    What a crazy game.

ok, now, KG really came through. We all know the way Braxton runs this team needs a solid backup passer. His long ball wasn't too good though, that pickoff he under threw the pass. I also was very upset on that called safety penalty, that was clearly a horrible call !

That said, I don't think this team is if *that* bad, I mean, they really played well against Nebraska. I think the problem with this team (let's just talk offense.. lol) is that it's clear they go how Braxton goes. Today he wasn't on. His passes were overthrows (reminds me of last year, this is the same problem he had last year, the overthrows are uncatchable), outside of the run where he got hurt, he had like something like 5 yards running up to that point ?

I think Hyde is showing he has the will to run, and run hard. Nearly 100 years on 19 carries is a solid day, and his run on 4th and a yard was tremendous.

The o-line, imo is much better this year than the last 4 years.

Another positive : I thought Boren played well. I watch him and he is definite a ball hawk. He was in on the tackles. I prefer him over Storm. I'm not happy with Storm, to me he should sit on the bench. That first big play was just horrible (and where is the safety for that ?)

That all said, I think Urban should get alot of credit for what he is doing already - taking a team that couldn't win last year and going 8-0. It says that having good coaches can offset youth and inexperience.

For a year that I consider year one of 'rebuilding' where there is no bowl game pressure, they are doing better than I expected.

  • Dave -- if Shazier goes down for any extended period, you can tack an "e" on "LB corps".

  • In no way do I think we are a great team, but to win a game where your best players gets knocked out, you turn it over 4 times, get no calls and have 1 true LB, I think that says something about this team. Do I think the Bucks will go undefeated? No. But none of the remaining teams scare me.

  • Dave, I really do understand your opinion and for the most part I agree with it. We have flaws, sometimes numerous and so very apparent but go back in time to 2002. I just did and looked at tOSU's game results for the season: we lucked out against Cinn. and won by 4, down the stretch we won over Wisc. by 5, Penn St. by 6, and of course the 4th down TD to beat this same Purdue by 4, then we had to beat Ill. in OT and of course Miami in 2 OT. Now I'm not gonna say that this team is the equal to that team BUT I wouldn't count us out either. I like Kenny, he sees the field well and goes to many different receivers. He kinda reminds me of the QB that beat tOSU from Fla., no not Tebow the starter. Ok, here's my pressing question to you, how can there not be a better LB than Klein? The kid may know what to do, he just can't do it. Is it a case of Fick not being able to judge talent, remember how long it took him to figure out #10 was the best of his LBers last year. Playing a kid can't be any worse than playing Klein.....

    LB's shouldn't cover Wr's..
LB's cover running backs all the time...nice excuse for Storm "Tortoise" Klein...
He's surpassed Steve BelliSORRY and Joe Bauserman in the worst Buckeye of all time category...that guy couldn't catch my grandfather in the open field.

  • Purdue only scored 13 points on offense. If the offense would have showed up we would have beaten them as bad or worse than Sconsin or Michigan.

If we shore up the special teams and stop giving up huge plays we can beat anyone in the B10 for sure.

Storm Klein needs to be on the far end of the bench and never leave it. Both scoring drives he was playing linebackers. I'm not buying he is better than the young guys...lets find out.

I think the defense played better but we are not where we need to be.

Another thing you need to consider is that we get a bye week before the last two weeks. It will be huge IMO.

OSU should have lost at home to Purdue. There were some positives to take out of this game as I outlined in the story (Kenny G, Chris Fields, Ryan Shazier, a "Never Say Die" attitude). But if you wanted me to paint a rosy picture, sorry, I have to call 'em as I see 'em. They should have lost today -- I'm thrilled they didn't -- and a loss is coming down the pike eventually. I hope I'm wrong. This is an extremely-flawed football team. Almost lost at home to a Purdue team that was completely embarrassed in West Lafayette the last two weeks by Michigan and Wisconsin (two teams that will give OSU fits). Also, OSU had the "revenge factor" going for them and still came out flat as hell. Very disappointing overall. However, I'm happy to get the win. Hopefully they can prove me wrong and win these final four games and finish 12-0. Bucks are two-thirds of the way there.

I think anyone who has followed my writing over the years knows this to be true: I don't try and act all rosy; I don't try and act negative. I'm a straight-shooter. I want the Buckeyes to do well (grew up a diehard fan) but you'll never see political-correctness in my stories. At least I hope not.

We should have lost to Cincy and Purdue in 2002...Illinois as well...

    Dave:
I agree with your analysis. It almost had to have been a concussion. He looked very confused and unable to focus and also unable to maintain his balance. Those are classic concussion symptoms. We should know more as the week progresses. If he is able to start against PSU, it will indicate that the concussion was mild. If not, the concussion was more significant. At least we know that Guiton can handle the job if he can't start or play. Even if he can start, some consideration should be given to getting Guiton in for a few series just to get him more experience and, mor eimportantly, to keep Miller out of harm's way for a few downs.

  • We learned that our defense can been pretty good if they just stay aggressive. They were aggressive during the OT and look at the results. But, they cannot play reactive defense waiting for the other team to dictate and then counter-punching. They need to cover the receivers near or at the LOS, blitz frequently and from different directions and challenge the other team to run at our DL. Yes, they will give up some big plays as they did today, but they will get many more 3 and outs, interceptions, tackles for loss and fumbles. Boren played well. Shazier was terrific. We need to get one or more of the young LBs some PT and experience. Luke Fickell deserves some credit for a semi-major turnaround of this D in one week! Purdue is a much better team than IU.

We learned that we have some exceptional reserves. Guiton was great. Fields was terrific. Guiton threw to Fields and Stoneburner, who needs to get more throws than Miller has made. Those are guys Miller does not typically look for. Guiton threw much more quickly than Miller. He made his reads and found the open receiver. Miller has a better arm and, once he learns to make his reads more quickly and to get rid of the ball to the open receiver, he will get hit much less frequently and the offense will not have the lulls that it has been experiencing. Glad he is ok! Still think he is a star! But, I am very glad that Kenny Guiton is his back-up!

  • That is an incredibly flippant and arrogant comment about Braxton Miller's injury, sir.
You are saying OSU lied on the record about Braxton Miller's injury and you are diagnosing it with how many years of medical training on your resume?
For an administrator at this site to chastise others in this thread and then make a mocking post like that accusing the school of lying to the media and the fans is simply incredible. I expect more from you, sir, much more.
