What We Learned: Ohio State 29, Purdue 22 (OT)

  • Thanks for addressing the refs... They were HORRIBLE! One of the worst officiated games I've ever seen

  • Dave, I am glad you said something about the officiating. I know I am biased when dealing with Ohio State so when I felt the officiating was terrible (you failed to mention a couple of really generous spots for Purdue which had me scratching my head) I didn't know if it really was as bad as I thought I saw or I just had my buckeye fan glasses on.

I am glad we won and had we lost I would be howling mad about it. Isn't there some oversight for these people who effect games so greatly? Forget the game outcome. Those officials were terrible. Purdue was holding on the edge all night long and never got called for it once but our TE puts a hand on an opposing players back and they get two points? What about the block in the back on the muffed punt return by Purdue? The guy didn't even try to hide it. Forget the pass interference. I doubt anyone knew what was ok or not because judging by the contact in the first PI call, our guy interfered with theirs on the final play of the game even though they were both going for the ball.

I hope someone does something about it. The game does not need more bad officials. These people need fired before they ruin someone's year and cost a school millions of dollars because they called a touchdown when it was down at the two yard line (hello Illinois)

  • I do think Purdue played a great game today. Their time of possession and willingness to take what was given really frustrated us. Production on 1st down for them was awesome. They played extremely well on D as well. Best tackling game that they have had. Going for it on 4th down inside their own 20... very ballsy. Coaching was better than OSU today.

I couldn't believe some of the calls. Purdue seemed to get an extra 2 yards, and we got backed up 2. The Carlos Hyde run at the end of the game at our 30. they backed his progress up 3 yards. So many missed holding calls.

Bottom line is we are running on fumes. We really need our offense to get started in the 1st qtr and build big leads. I am afraid our defensive coaches walk away from that game thinking their strategy is sound. Bend but don't break. We need to start exerting some pressure. Play some bump and run, knock the receivers off their routes. It is going to be too little to late if we don't start playing big boy football.

I hope Braxton is ok, and thank God for KG. KG has icewater in his veins.

OSU should have lost at home to Purdue. There were some positives to take out of this game as I outlined in the story (Kenny G, Chris Fields, Ryan Shazier, a "Never Say Die" attitude). But if you wanted me to paint a rosy picture, sorry, I have to call 'em as I see 'em. They should have lost today -- I'm thrilled they didn't -- and a loss is coming down the pike eventually. I hope I'm wrong. This is an extremely-flawed football team. Almost lost at home to a Purdue team that was completely embarrassed in West Lafayette the last two weeks by Michigan and Wisconsin (two teams that will give OSU fits). Also, OSU had the "revenge factor" going for them and still came out flat as hell. Very disappointing overall. However, I'm happy to get the win. Hopefully they can prove me wrong and win these final four games and finish 12-0. Bucks are two-thirds of the way there.

I think anyone who has followed my writing over the years knows this to be true: I don't try and act all rosy; I don't try and act negative. I'm a straight-shooter. I want the Buckeyes to do well (grew up a diehard fan) but you'll never see political-correctness in my stories. At least I hope not.

Great article and dead on about the team!

I learned the Big Ten offices have put the word out to the refs: do what you can to help the Buckeyes get a loss. They don't want to deal with the championship game being #2 vs. #3 with The Buckeyes sitting at home with their trophy. I expect to see the calls continue to favor the opponents as the season goes on. I love a conspiracy theory!

    So true!

  • the great thing about bing 8-0? It gives you a chance to be 9-0. (OK, so I know it's not original). Hoping for Braxton's quick recovery, for his sake. Surely we need him - but we need all the players who are out. I think we can win with Kenny G. I have utmost confidence in him, and I hope that Cardale has figured out that it's real important that he grows-the-f-up and is ready to go in in case the situation should present itself. This team has real heart. I think they have an attitude that since they play for Urban Meyer, they will be successful. Well, they are the ones who are responsible for the execution of the game plan.
Penn State is pounding teams with the short, quick passing game. Then they hit you with a long one. We have got to be ready for that - all game long. They are actually making McGloin look good. Kudos to Bill O'Brien for that. One game at a time Bucknutters. Urbs is really earning his paycheck this year.

  • On one hand I look at the talent on this team both defensively and offensively and think "compared to the teams we've left, we're head and shoulder above them and should win....DECISIVELY!"

...But then you come into games like Indiana and Purdue, two teams we should've throttled, and we stuggle to hold onto one of the wins and have to come from behind in another!

So what I will say about 12-0 is this; It is extremely possible and in some aspects likely, but I simply don't feel confident that resiliency alone will win you EVERY game, although it may in this weak B1G. Simply put, you need play makers, consistency, and domination...just about all of which we somehow lack in the games we should convincingly win and seem to find and put on display in the games which should be losses for us.

  • Jesus... you would think we had a losing season and will be firing our coach at the end of the season. Seriously brother, I am tOSU through and through, alum and all... but this article makes me want to cancel. Is our team GREAT? No.... is our team HORRIBLE because of coaching like it was last year?? NO. Give our kids some credit and at least slap them on the back for being undefeated right now. Worst 8-0 team? REALLY? Come on.... We don't have the best D... and our O is slow to start.. .but damn, we have some SERIOUS weapons that are about to come into their own. Our coaching on D... I would agree needs some help, but the O is beyond ANYTHING we could have imagined before this year. There is a reason after Florida beat us there where some of us called for UFM to replace Tress... and I love Tress. Urban has spirit... and he is what we have wanted as a coach for a long time. Right now, he is putting a team that he did not recruit, and a team that he did not pick in at 8-0, you should kiss his feet for getting them to gut out MULTIPLE games and win.

  • I grew up during the Woody Hayes era and have a tough time remembering a perfect team. I remember a team that barely beat Cincinnati and need a last minute TD against Purdue to win. Plus several other close calls. It was somewhere around the year 2002. They have played from behind several times this year and its been by more than a TD at times. This is a team with 22 freshmen and sophomores on the 2 deep. They may not win out but they have and did play like Buckeyes yesterday which means to me that you never give up no matter what. I love the heart of this team, something every Buckeye team has not had. There are rare teams that may not be the most talent team or the best team around but they are the best TEAM because of their heart and being a together as a team. So we may lose a game or more but I for one already am proud to be a Buckeye and believe that this team is going to give 110 percent the whole game. This is not a great team yet but greatness is not always measured in talent or mistakes, it is a measure of heart and effort. Yesterday they showed what a great team is.

  • Lost in this whole thing is that, like Urban said, we're pretty much running of fumes.

It'll be a hell of a coaching job if Urban gets this team to 12-0 and somehow nets Braxton the Heisman.

Michigan State said William Gholston had the wind knocked out of him. Braxton looked like he was knocked out for a second, or at the very least extremely woozy. I'd bet a doctor would diagnose him with a concussion. OSU has no obligation to say anything about his injury. Therefore, when they do comment, they have no obligation to be forthcoming.

I'm glad that Miller is not seriously hurt. But he at least suffered a mild concussion IMO, no matter what the "official word" is from OSU.

Curious...Dr Biddle, you buying OSU oficial word today?
