What We Learned: Ohio State 52, Indiana 49

  • We still put zero pressure on the QB.
    STOP dropping Spence into coverage.
STOP playing guys like A-Wash & Bennett at rush end positions when they are slower than molasses

How about at least TRYING to see what one of the Fr. LB's can do? Klein is bad. We know what he can and cannot do. OJ and CB are very inconsistent (to put it nicely) ....how about blitzing?

Fickell has got to go. He really is an awful evaluator of talent, in-game adjustor and really has shown no signs of improving this defense.

scUM might put 100 on us...

  • Why do people want Bo Pellini? Has anyone seen HIS defense this year?

Orange juice almost came out of my nose.

  • Is it really Fickell's fault? Or is it time for a reality check? Its easy to scheme against lesser talent. The ONLY strong point on the Buckeye defense is the interior line, oh yea and Brady Roby. All other personnel on the D is either too young or woefully inadequate.

  • I don't want to duplicate ideas so I'll try to not state the obvious (D is horrible, Braxton is great):

*IU Coach Kevin Wilson deserves big props. He attacked TOSU's glaring weaknesses and must have studied game film from Jeff Tedford (Cal) as opposed to watching really bad game planning by Sparty.

*Rod Smith gave everyone the warm fuzzies with his comeback act and then he fumbles. His problem is entirely mental--if Philly Brown can overcome bad hands, so can Rod.

*Z Boren deserves huge credit for his efforts. I don't know if he's better, worse or the same as Klein or Grant--but that's beside the point. Learning a position in 3-4 practices at this level is unheard of.

*Arguing about who should be the next DC is somewhat pointless. It's obvious that there should be numerous more competent coaches than Fickell.

*Any road game for this team is going to be a huge challenge. Who would've imagined that a trip to Happy Valley this season would be huge challenge?

The "strong point on the Buckeye defense" failed to ever put any pressure, let alone sack the IU QB. This is the 4th or 5th time we have made a mediocre QB look like a combination of Otto Graham, Brett Favre, and Drew Brees.

Our DB's broke up a lot passes in the first half but resorted to their old tatics in the second half, i.e. almost every short pass went for big yardage with our players seemingly stopped in their tracks . . .looking at each other. The last IU score was really pathetic.

I must admit IU has the best looking pass protection that I have seen all year. They formed a pocket wedge around the QB that even a saftey blitzer couldn't penetrate.

They also do the best job of holding that I have seen . . .and I don't think they were called for it one time.

  • Indiana had over 50 pass attempts. ZERO SACKS!!! Maybe one or two hurries. All thes 5 star ends , tackles going to the NFL early, is it the players or is it the sorry ass coaching. This defense has athletes to put pressure on a QB. Last week they looked pretty good with pressure. I thinks this defensive coaching staff is pathetic!!!! You are telling me with the defensive front OSU has that a linebacker, corner or safety cannot come up and get a shot on the QB. BULLSHIT! PAGING FRED PAGAC!!! For Zach Borren to lead with 8 tackles speaks volumes about where Curtis GRANT is. 5 star my ass. This entire defensive effort was dispicable! Indiana would kill to have players half as good as our backups. I truly think that this defensive coaching staff is terrible.

  • OK come down off the ledge boys..this was a classic letdown game..two huge emotional wins before this game..if you didnt see this coming, well you dont understand college football players..we were well on our way to a convincing win when Miller throws the red zone interception..our back seven have been collectively inept the entire year outside Roby..this game the DL decided not to show up..no pressure all night from that vaunted group and I dont remember one blitz all night..the score was closer than the game indicated..we are banged up and the offense will have to shoulder the load for the rest of the year..

Was He ?Or did he have superior talent? Remember WE outgained LSU in that game. Luke apparently is reading a book on fundemental Defense. From the 1930's!

Give him talent like tOSU has and nobody will be putting up big numbers on him

  • Please don't use the stat of "tackles" to support your assertion that someone played well. Tackles are arguably the most-overrated statistic in football. If you think Boren played with good leverage, fought his way off blocks, etc., that one thing. But citing how many tackles he had? Sorry, I've seen guys have terrible games while they are racking up 10+ tackles in a game. I think Boren played as well as anyone could have expected. But I'm not going to pretend as if he played well just because he led the team in tackles with 8. I think he has the chance to be serviceable there. Nothing more. However, "serviceable" is hell of a lot better than some of the defensive guys have been playing.

  • We've learned that every unit on this football team, except for the OL, has underperformed to date. The RBs are coming on, however. Other than OL, the only consistent bright spots on this team have been the QB and the corners.

I agree. Although, defending the spread the game plan is usually going to involve less blitzing as it is high risk of giving up the big play. However, we are giving them up anyhow so why didn't we run some stunts and blitzes...at least once in a while? Your guess is as good as anyone's!

Ahh, I wish I could take credit for it. I think that's a Dan Patrick original (or Keith Olbermann, one of the two from the old Sportscenter days).

The good ol' days, when Sportscenter was actually worth watching.
