What We Learned: Ohio State 68, Michigan State 60

  • I remember it too.Great run!!
    I thought Chapman averaged 40.
    Fun to watch.
    Deshaun gets hot and
goes for 30 a game and we go to the Final Four.
    That would be sweet!!

  • Now is the time for the Bucks to catch fire....,.........

  • The GANG THAT CAN'T SHOOT STRAIGHT made my day. Long runs in march go to teams with good guard play. You can scheme out a big man. Guards that can penetrate and shoot from outside usually rise to the top. Despite a nice win today this is not a good shooting team. If we get thirty from Craft/ Smith/ Scott, we're gonna win. Most nights that doesn't happen. Amir Williams is soft...period. So...twenty from Thomas...thirty from the three guards..twenty from the rest...70 total & a chance with their tough defense. But we gotta get that 30 from the three guards.

  • Amazing the way they played the 2nd half. Craft drove and scored time and time again in 2nd half. Used to always play zone under Matta because we werent good defensively. By and large this is one of Mattas better teams on defense. Shot selection on offense is puzzling a lot, esp when we have no one in rebound position. I will take it though. A nice signature win for the good guys.

Man, that was a great win.

Did anyone else feel like the officiating crew was trying to give it to MSU in the last six or so minutes?

I agree with you on both counts.

Sometimes I think Coach Matta needs to get a lot more animated and emotional about the lack of calls in our favor from the refs. Maybe to the point of drawing a technical foul in doing so. Poor Deshaun Thomas. How many times does he get hacked and there's no call. He's the leading scorer in the B1G and still get little or no benefit on any calls.

  • We learned our RPI and BPI should receive a huge boost after two wins over top 15 RPI teams. I would guess we'll be just outside the Top 12 in the polls. Northwestern has no business losing to us by anything less than double digits on Thursday.

  • Shannon Scott needs more minutes. He creates, is shooting better and is a better playmaker than Smith by far. He creates energy when he enters the game that Smith just can't seem to do. Good win for the Buckeyes!

  • Huge win for the Buckeyes. Not only a big win but a win against a good team when Thomas isn't at his best. Just think how dangerous Craft would be if he could hit an open 3. It was nice to see a ton of people contribute. And it was good to see Ravenal do something positive but I want Williams still starting. When Ravenal starts he actually thinks he is a primary option which is bad news for us. And Williams defends the post better. While i agree he has some slippery paws, that pass at the end of the first half was Scott's fault. Why in the world would he go screaming down the lane out of control and throw a pass to Williams just below the free throw line? Neither Craft nor Thomas touched the ball there. He did the same thing late in the game flying down the lane and missing a tough layup when Thomas was spotted up in the corner. Overall, very gritty performance by the Buckeyes when they needed it most. With the right draw and the defense we are capable of playing we could make a run in the tournament.

  • This Buckeye team can play some serious defense and if DT can get hot in the NCAA Tournament you never know what can happen. I still think the ceiling for this team is the Sweet 16, but there really aren't many great teams in college basketball this season. Indiana is the clear No. 1 and then OSU can play with just about anybody due to their defense. Great to see them win such a huge game even when DT was ice cold from the floor (4-of-16).

Craft just continues to earn his stripes. Just when fans are ready to write off his offensive game he explodes for 21 points against Michigan State. He just needs to forget about ever shooting threes. Drive that ball to the rack.

Sam Thompson really played an underrated defensive game as well. He was in Dawson's grill all game.

Everyone always jumps on me when I criticize Craft because for some reason he has become blameless. His offense at times has lost us games in big situations. I've never doubted that Craft could be above average offensively. It's on him for not stepping up to the challenge for the role we needed him. This performance shows you how good this team can be when Craft shows up. You can talk about defense until your blue in the face with Craft (no one gives others enough credit for their individual defense), but he has to produce offensively. PG is too important to have a glorified defensive specialist. Lets see if he can build.

Quietly, Sam Thompson has become arguable our best individual defender. People will continue to bash Amir, but I see him changing shots defensively, which has a huge impact. This game, this team, and Craft all leave us with same questions. Can they carry this forward or will they regress? As for Matta, he once again comes up big time late in the year. Anyone who says the problem is Thad just is not paying attention.

  • Amir Williams is a bum. There. I said it. We all think it. I said it. He is a bum. The worst part is he doesn't have to be. He is either the laziest basketball player I have ever witnessed or the dumbest who can't understand basic fundamentals that normal kids learn in elementary school playground basketball. My television is in danger every time I watch him play due to objects flying in a fit of rage.

This is just stuff I see that makes me flip out because its mostly just due to lack of effert. I don't bag on the guy with the turnovers. That is going to happen with any young guy. My beef is his lack of aggresiveness and how he doesn't put himself into position and fight for the ball. Its like he STILL thinks he is playing in a gym full of 6 footers and he can just dominate with his size and length. He doesn't use his size to his advantage. He doesn't move his feet, body out someone else, get aggressive and fight for things. You are big. ACt like it. Scare people. Oden was scary. He dunked on people and screamed at them. Amir is not like Oden and never will be a player of that caliber but man he needs to work on his mean streak. Rebounds are mostly about effert. And the lack of it is what really ticks me off. You can't score. You don't run the floor exceptionally well. You get pushed around on defense under the basket by smaller guys. Why are you playing? What are you contributing besides turnovers? I don't know. He should be pulling down 10 boards a game minimum with the minutes he plays. 10 boards a game.

I hope he turns it around. I really do. I want buckeye players to succeed. Just work hard. Why won't he work hard? Why doesn't he want it more? Put his ass on the bench. He's a sophmore and its not better.

My lofty expectations are slowly fading away into the mediocrity that Amir Williams appears to be.

I still remember the 1984 NCAA tourney when Rosey Chapman averaged over 30 points a game and led the upstart (and #10 seed) Dayton Flyers to the Elite 8 against Patrick Ewing and the Georgetown Hoyas.

And as often happens the refs swallowed their whistles when it came to a lower seeded team being fouled by a higher seeded team, otherwise Dayton would have been a final four team and the idiot Flyer admin may not have forced Don Donoher out. Velvet was a poor man's version of the future Michael Jordan and great fun to watch. Too bad he was just a bit too small for the NBA. Thanks for reminding me of that great run and why I haven't supported the hapless Flyers for 30 years now.

I ran into Donoher's daughter-in-law this past summer and she said he's still doing great, helping out at camps and advising coaches.

  • Williams had to play today because of his defense on the block. Yes, I said that. Ravenel continually got backed down into the paint by Nix. Amir actually did a decent job (most of the game) of keeping Nix off the block, holding ground, and getting a long arm up in his face.

Thomas, on the other hand, was owned by Payne in the paint, though it isn't exactly a fair matchup (6'9" with a 7'1" wingspan vs. 6'6.5").

Ravenel played great, and needs more PT, but Williams must play against the big post teams.

    Great win! Go Bucks!

can't agree more, he plays decent D but that's it. Dude is a TURD. Brittany Griner's more of a man than he is.

  • We learned....Awesome Matta is!

We all hoped the season would be better, but we did not know truthfully where the second scorer would come from. We do not have another true scorer and another person does not step up every game like Craft did today. We wonder about certain decisions Matta makes, but his track record speaks for itself...20 wins again and it is mixed in with BIG Championships and final four appearances! He does need to find another scorer and get another great recruiting class too, to keep it going I would say!

  • This team lacks leadership and intensity as a whole. Craft is unquestionnably a great leader but he is the only source of leadership on this team. Craft brings the intensity every game as does Ravenal and Thompson. Thomas tries to lead and usually plays with intensity but he still forces his play some. Matta has done his usual great job of coaching other than in one area. He seems challenged to see combinations that at certain times of the game would give us a lift. I definitely agree that Ravenal needs about two thirds of the minutes versus Williams. In the non-conference part of the schedule we saw that Craft and Scott playing together gave us perhaps the best defensive guard combo in the country and that the two playing together definitely raised the tempo of the game. Yet when the confernence started we saw very little of the two together until just of recent. Lenzell Smith needs to start every game due to his potential but an early assessment has to be taken in each of his games as to how many minutes to give him as he is quite inconsistent a la Buford. We just have to accept that Thomas will never be the guy and at times will contribute to the struggles when he is forcing his game.

No...not at all...we had turnovers and some dumb fouls...we also got the benefit of no calls on Ravy's block and contesting Dawson's shot late

  • Minds right, check........Defensive intensity for 40 min, check......effort, check. Everything else takes care of itself because our offense feeds off of our ability to be succesful on the defensive side of the floor.

I personally did not expect a win, not with Sparty coming off of the loss. We matched their intensity and we played like we wanted it more.

When DT scores 2 pts in the first half and we are only down 6 then things are going pretty damn well.

Craft played his best game of the year and Ravenal came up huge. I have been saying all year that Ravenal should be getting the majority of the minutes. He is capable offensively he can be physical defensively and has a much higher bball IQ than Amir. The only thing that Amir provides is the ability to change the occasional shot in the paint but he negates that with stupid fouls. It is still competely mind boggling how sof Amir is on the offensive side. NO HANDS....unless he is WIDE FREAKING OPEN under the basket we should never ever ever throw him the ball....period.

Also, all season I have been harping on Scott playing the majority of the minutes at point. I do not know the final stats but Craft and Scott were on the floor a lot and Scott was running a lot of point. That needs to continue.....maybe it's me but in my opinion that line-up allowed Craft to be more aggressive on offensive and still maintain his defensive intensity.

LSJ....didn't really do anything but he came up huge with a 3 pointer later in the game. Other than that he was tossing up bricks. He needs to stick to penetrating the lane and drawing fouls. He can knock down the three but he needs to take those in the flow of the offense and not rushed.

Great win but I am not going to get overly excited until i see this type of play consistently (not necessarily Craft scoring 21). We cannot go to sleep Thursday against NW with IU looming.

Go Bucks! Congrats to Matta on another 20 win season!!! Glad he is our coach

ditto on the ref's.....people need to quit complaining about the officiating. We only had 9 TO's......not bad against a stout defensive minded team like MSU.

  • We learned once again that if, and only if, this Team plays great Defense for 40 minutes, they can beat anyone.

We learned once again what a great player Craft can be when he is aggressive offensively. He took the ball to the Hoop consistently and that turned this game around.

  • Williams has done nothing all yr to warrant playing time, yet people including Bucknuts staff were calling for him to get more time earlier in the season. He doesnt score, rebound, or defend. Not sure Ross deserves the minutes he is getting either. Another player everyone was screaming for. A motivated Smith Jr is far more valuable than either Williams or Ross. Maybe he feels a little disrespected with everyone wanting others in the lineup. I guess fans are just too fickle.

  • It was amazing to watch Sparty not change on defense and continue to let Craft drive the rim... I thought that they would drop off and make Crtat dish the ball for an outside shot than to let him drive time and time.

Yep, they had no respect for him; like he was getting lucky or something. You would think by the fifth or so time Craft blew past Appling like he was a chair (everyone that has played basketball has done dribbling drills around chairs) that Izzo would do something to adjust.

Say what you will about Craft's offensive game, but he's good at taking the ball to the basket. We've never seen him do it as well as he did yesterday, but he's shown since his freshman year it's something he's very adept at.

What a win! Still feeling good about it Monday morning. This team really needed something like that if they want any hope of doing damage in March.
