What We Learned: Ohio State 68, Michigan State 60

  • Bids first you talk about how you've maligned Ravenal and after 1 good game he should be the starter. If you were just a fan and not a fan/jurnalist I'd say you were the biggest bandwagon jumper out there.

Everyone always jumps on me when I criticize Craft because for some reason he has become blameless. His offense at times has lost us games in big situations. I've never doubted that Craft could be above average offensively. It's on him for not stepping up to the challenge for the role we needed him. This performance shows you how good this team can be when Craft shows up. You can talk about defense until your blue in the face with Craft (no one gives others enough credit for their individual defense), but he has to produce offensively. PG is too important to have a glorified defensive specialist. Lets see if he can build.

Quietly, Sam Thompson has become arguable our best individual defender. People will continue to bash Amir, but I see him changing shots defensively, which has a huge impact. This game, this team, and Craft all leave us with same questions. Can they carry this forward or will they regress? As for Matta, he once again comes up big time late in the year. Anyone who says the problem is Thad just is not paying attention.

Yeah Boy, you sure watch a different game than I do. Wish we could be in the same room to see the rest of the year unfold. Really would like to know why there is no respect for Craft and his game. The game itself has many ups and downs for all of them. But Craft is the glue to this team and has provided the needed leadership in many ways. And yes you would have a argument by saying that Thompson is our best defender.

Williams has done nothing all yr to warrant playing time, yet people including Bucknuts staff were calling for him to get more time earlier in the season. He doesnt score, rebound, or defend. Not sure Ross deserves the minutes he is getting either. Another player everyone was screaming for. A motivated Smith Jr is far more valuable than either Williams or Ross. Maybe he feels a little disrespected with everyone wanting others in the lineup. I guess fans are just too fickle.

Does anyone think that Amir could turn into Ken Johnson who was lousy his first couple of years and then gained confidence and was a major inside force for coach O'brien? We can only hope, but Williams must really get some strength not only in upper/lower body but his hands!! Another Johnson would be outstanding!

  • Amir has got to stop putting the ball to his waist once he catches it. Put it towards his head or above. Reduces turnovers.

  • Craft was the difference although Appling is way overrated. Scott still can't shoot, he just a smaller version of Thompson out there. No need to play both scott & craft together unless you are pressing or have quick athletic guards on the other team. Been nice to see the white boy get a couple of minutes in the first half to open up the game against a bigger and slower team. Thaddy needs to get the team running as his half court offense just blows especially when Thomas is covered like a glove!

Ravenel has been much-maligned lately (including by me). However, Amir Williams is beyond "maligned." That was the point I was making. While Rav is no world beater -- and while I'll admit I've been tough on him lately -- he's clearly better than Amir Williams.

Trice and Payne should have been a schollie offer by the OSU staff some years back.

Payne did not want to play behind Sullinger after playing with him in AAU. Trice should be at Central Mich.

  • Other than Kenny Johnson and Amir Williams both being 6-11 and from Detroit, I don't see the comparisons. Kenny showed very early in his career that he had incredible springs for a player that size. He also showed good timing in terms of blocking shots. That "good" timing eventually turned into "great" timing and he became the best shot-blocker in OSU history. Kenny was as nice of a guy as there was, but something about blocking shots brought out the animal in him.

Also, offensively, while Kenny was no Jared Sullinger in terms of having soft hands, he could at least catch the basketball more often than not. Amir catches like he's wearing casts on both hands.

Funny Kenny Johnson story: Got to do a radio show with Scoonie Penn last month and he was talking about how Amir had no nastiness on the court, but at least Kenny Johnson would occasionally let his inner beast out on the court. Then Scoonie says, totally serious, "Then again, Kenny would rather sit and play the piano than do anything else."

  • Matta completely outcoached Izzo in the second half and that is saying something because Izzo, in my opinion, is one of the premier coaches in the country. Of course, I also think Matta is another one of the premier coaches in the country.

I also think Scott and Thompson played great defensively yesterday. Williams needs to: move his feet; grab rebounds and keep the ball at chest or higher and dunk not dribble; and look for assists from Craft, Scott, Smith and Thompson on their drives to the basket.

Those four should drive to the Hoop as much as possible, especially against Teams like IU, UM, Wisconsin and MSU. None are great jump shooters (although Smith is pretty good). So, it is a waste of time to simply through the ball around the perimeter. The opponent will be thrilled if one of those four takes a jumper instead of driving to the Hoop. If they drive they may score, get fouled, both, or dish the ball to Thomas or Ravenal or WIlliams for an easy score.

Still think McDonald and Della Valle should get some minutes. McDonald can help in the middle and is a better offensive player than WIlliams. Della Valle can really shoot and, that alone, will help Thomas and Ross. But, he also is a pretty good passer and a decent defender.

We still need a good big man. If we had that we would be an elite team!
